Can sex only cause you to go into labour, if your body is ready anyway??

I ask because me and DH had sex 2 hours before my first contraction, and he now thinks it caused my premature labour. I thought that sex would only cause labour to start if it was about to happen anyway.

I was prone to m/c so was reluctant to risk it.
However, I did at 13w once and had a really heavy bleed the next day caused by small placental abruption. Needless to say I never risked it again after that. I've come to the conclusion that if baby is fixed tight then nothing will budge it. But if you are not sure that there might be a weakness, best not to take the risk. If nothing else for your own peace of mind.

i tried every day for about 2 weeks, and dont think it worked for me. my friend went into labour twice after having sex. ive read it only works if your ready, the sperm acts as postoglandin (sp?) and orgasm can trigger contractions

StrawberryMartini · 20/10/2007 09:33

Definitely worked for me. Started contractions 2 hours after. Was already 10 days late.

Hillbilly · 20/10/2007 09:39

I am 40 + 2 and had sex last night hoping it might start things off but nothing so far!

DirtyGertiefromnumber30 · 20/10/2007 09:51

id say your body and the baby have to be ready regardless of what you do. we had sex every day on and around my due date and i aslo had 3 stretch and sweeps (all in addition to hot curries, pinapple, long walks etc etc)

She was 11 days late in the end, but NOTHING was shifting her except for when she was good and ready!

sparklygothkat · 20/10/2007 11:17

so the general idea is that it will only happen if your body is ready? Poor DH feels guilty and thinks he caused Callum to arrive at 33 weeks..

God, dh and I were at it everyday from my due date and ds was 10 days over!

How is the little man doing?

sparklygothkat · 20/10/2007 11:22

He is ok, pulled his feeding tube out again, so just waiting for DH to get back so I can take him to the hospital to have it put back in. He is finally gaining weight (4lb 6oz now ) He is such a good baby, we hardly know we have him here.

Sparkly, no idea on the sex question but I've jsut seen his picture on your profile - he's gorgeous!!

Making me go all melty and smiley

Lulumama · 20/10/2007 14:03

it would only trigger it, if it was going to happen anyway

you ahve an irritable uterus and a history of prem labour, so it is certainly not DHs fault

sex ripens the cervix, and gets it ready for labour, so it would only get you going 2 hours later if you were on the verge of going into labour anyway.

it is not your Dhs fault

sarahloumadam · 21/10/2007 19:05

Hi Sparkly - hope your DH feels better after reading lulumama's post? Hope he has his feeding tube back in the little monkey (DS not DH!). Looking forward to joining you on the Nov post-natal thread but not just yet.
