Waters broken before contractions!

I'm 39 + 1 and mine started to go at 6 am this morning. Lots now, lovely and clear. But no contractions as yet! Did similar happen to anyone else? My midwife (home birth) says just to chill but that is easier said than done!!!

My waters started to leak at about 6am, we were on the phone to the hospital when they went with a proper gush. Had to bin the rug. Unfortunately there was blood in them so I had to go into hospital and stay there. My contractions started within a couple of hours but they were patchy and irregular at first. They became stronger and more frequent throughout they day and into the night but I didn't progress enough so had labour augmented the next morning. My advice would be to eat something and go back to bed! Get some rest.

Yes mine broke and I went back to sleep after cleaning up because there were no contractions. The next lot contained meconium so I had to go in. I still didn't have any contractions but it was my due date and I was over 40 so they induced. Son was born a few hours later Smile

Nicknamegoeshere · 23/05/2020 09:01

Aw thanks all. I'm having a homebirth so hoping they start soon! Will be declining induction so fingers crossed I'll get at least a few niggles before too long 😊 This is my third baby but never happened this way around before!

I had this happen. If nothing is happening 4 hours later you need medical attention. The NHS is spectacularly crap when it comes to dealing with the risk of infection when waters break. I’m sure you’ll be just fine but don’t let them make you feel bad for wanting attention.

crazycatlady7 · 23/05/2020 09:05

Mine went as in the movies sat watching tv in the evening. No pains or signs it would happen and had seen a midwife two hours before who said it would be a while still. Contractions started 30mins later and baby was here 2.5hrs later. He was my first.

WoollyFoolly · 23/05/2020 09:08

@Nicknamegoeshere mine was with my third baby too and I had a very straightforward home birth afterwards. Where I was the hospital said they were happy to wait until 72 hours after waters had broken before thinking about induction (or sooner if you show signs of infection obviously) so don't panic if nothing happens for a while.

saffy1234 · 23/05/2020 09:11

Yes with all my children this has happened contractions starting at around and hour to two hours after!

Besom · 23/05/2020 09:13

Yes stood up from the couch to go to bed and they broke in a gush. Contractions started about 3 or 4 hours later. Go well OP!

Spanneroo · 23/05/2020 09:27

My twin birth started this way. Walking to bring the first twin's (boney as hell) arse down got things moving very quickly! They were both born 32 minutes later.

How exciting OP! Good luck!

Mine went at home on a Sunday evening. Midwives told me to go to hospital to check they had definitely gone and booked me in for an induction for the Tuesday in case I didn't start contractions before then. I went home and started contractions a few hours later. DS born about 24 hours after waters breaking.

My waters broke before my contractions. It took a few hours for them to come, It was like a really bad period pain. I was quite happily just wandering around Tesco buying snacks. Gave birth less than 24 hrs later.

You can listen to the hypnobirthing tracks here. You need to scroll down the page for the link. I am sorry if this is not your thing but you are having a home birth so I though it might be.

elliejjtiny · 23/05/2020 09:38

This happened to me with 4 out of 5 dc
Dc2 labour started after 4 days
Dc3 labour started after 2 days
Dc4 wasn't engaged and was in a weird position so I had a c-section after 2 days
Dc5 labour started after 9 days

Babdoc · 23/05/2020 09:41

Yes, at 39 weeks with DD1. DH and I were having a final “romantic weekend” Grin together before the baby was due the next week!
DD1 was rapping on my uterine wall with annoyance while we were having sex, then I had an SRM immediately afterwards. Fortunately managed to leap out of bed and catch the flood in a bucket which I’d kept handy since feeling queasy the night before, so the mattress didn’t suffer.

Contractions were unimpressive for the next ten hours, so I stayed at home until 9pm, went into hospital and delivered DD at 2am that night.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 23/05/2020 10:14

Yes, around 6am on a Saturday too. Spent most of the day bustling around sorting shit out and was quite tired when contractions started to kick in properly at 6pm. Dd1 born Monday around 3.30am.
Take it easy ! Wink

Russell19 · 23/05/2020 10:19

My waters started trickling at 9am, no contractions till 10pm that night, didn't give birth until 42 hours later. I know you said you'll decline induction and I hope your contractions start soon but the longer the baby isn't protected by the waters increases the risk of infection. My baby and I both had to stay in hospital nearly a week after his birth due to suspected sepsis. No idea if it was because of the waters or not.

Nic165 · 23/05/2020 10:22

Mine went at 39+1 as well. Waters broke at 7am, mild period cramps until about 10am. Then contractions started and he was born at 2.30pm. Good luck!

Iwalkinmyclothing · 23/05/2020 10:30

Ds1 they broke first but labour started immediately after. Ds3 they started leaking an hour or two before labour got going. (Ds2 they didn't break until I was pushing his body out, he was born in the caul). Good luck!

CookPassBabtridge · 23/05/2020 10:40

With both my kids my waters popped while I was leaning forward in bed, and contractions didn't start for over 24 hours after! Both times I was so worried I was losing too much as it was pouring out of me but I was told your body replaces it.

UnspeakableBode · 23/05/2020 10:51

Mine popped in a big gush at 39+3 I tried everything to get the contractions to start as I was desparate no to be induced. Unfortunately nothing at all happened and at 39+6 I was induced as they were concerned about the risk of infection. I hope things get moving for you, induction wasnt a pleasant experience.

LisaSimpsonsbff · 23/05/2020 10:54

Mine broke at 2am, contractions started around 7am, baby born at 10pm. I found that the midwives were so certain that I would need to be induced that they ignored me saying that I was, in fact, now in labour - he was nearly born in the triage room because they wouldn't examine me, and then someone finally did and said 'I can see the baby's head! Labour ward, now!'. They seemed to be really stuck on the idea that a FTM whose waters broke before contractions would inevitably need to be induced.

LisaSimpsonsbff · 23/05/2020 10:54

Oh, and good luck, OP!

GU24Mum · 23/05/2020 11:05

Mine broke on a Weds morning and DS arrived v quickly on the Saturday afternoon a couple of hours after the hospital said I could go home as I definitely wasn't in labour!! Good luck OP - very exciting times.

Nicknamegoeshere · 23/05/2020 11:17

Thanks all. Still nothing! I've managed to get a bit of rest and now going to try walking!! I'm desperately hoping to avoid going into hospital and an induction as I had that with my first son and it was horrendous Sad

Hope you're doing alright OP. I'm shocked at some of the speedy births on here! Waters partially broke and co fractions started then 14 hours later full went then baby born after 19 hours
