Neonatal Units in the South of England

Hi

I am 28 weeks with twins and going away for 10 days to Somerset and Cornwall next week. As my 16 mnth ds was born early, my obstetrician has suggested that it would be a good idea to find out where the nearest neonatal units would be and plan how to get there if things start happening early.

We will be in Frome, Somerset (so I guess Bristol?), Padstow, Cornwall and St. Mawes, Cornwall. Does anyone know the closest units to these or have any idea where I can get the info.?

Many thanks

Although it seems quite far from where you are going, there is an excellant neo natel unit at souhthmead hospital north bristol, both my younger children spent alot of time there, alot of very ill babies are transfered there from all over the country, there is also a great unit at st michaels maternity hospital bristol, my youngest was born there at 29 wks and then tranfered to southmead, Hope thats of some use to you.

Thank you so much, ariel. It's great to know that there are not only two options, but also that you rate them both so highly. Obviously hoping that we won't be going there at all though!

Tinkerbell - can echo that units in Bristol are excellent - Southmead and St Michaels. There are also units at Truro, Exeter and Bath, as has been mentioned. Based in Frome tho', Bristol is your closest unit, tho' there is a large maternity unit at Bridgwater which may serve you for initial assessment.

Thanks, everyone, for your help. It's a huge weight off my mind (and more especially a panicky dh!) to know where we can go if we need to. Dh is planning it like a military operation, just in case!!
