overdue and really upset - i've been let down..

hello
I'm really upset and looking for a bit of moral support! i'm 5 days overdue with my first baby and my doula, who is really important to me, just rang to say she's having a marital crisis and is going up to yorkshire to be with her parents for the next couple of days.
she was really, really apologetic and I was really calm and sympathetic at the time but when i got off the phone I just burst into tears.
She was going to be my main birth partner, with my husband in more of a back up role and I know she would have been (hopefully still will be) brilliant. she was the main reason i was feeling confident about childbirth.
Ironically, this morning I went for acupuncture to try and help move the baby along - now i'm wanting to hold it up until the doula gets back! I feel like I should have reverse acupunture to keep him/her in there!
the doula says she's coming home on Monday night but I can't help feeling that might not happen...so I am left high and dry.
I feel really upset as she was very important to me and my feelings about giving birth.
my husband is being really lovely and saying he can try and be like a doula but it's not what either of us planned. I've got to get my head round that possibility though..

Mars - were your dts born Feb 2004?

MarsLady · 21/07/2007 16:49

Yes Mercy and your reason is?

Mercy · 21/07/2007 17:16

We were in the same hospital giving birth around the same time!!

I saw your website linked on another thread earlier today. You looked vaguely familiar but it's when I saw your rl surname I suddenly remembered (over) hearing your dts being discussed by the staff.

I also saw you once or twice and remember sayign to dh something along the lines of doesn't she look great etc.

And yes, you did. I would never have believed you had just given birth, let alone to twins!

MarsLady · 21/07/2007 17:25

But what were the staff saying?

Mercy · 21/07/2007 17:45

It was something pretty innocuous about their progress and when you should be discharged irrc.

My bed just happened to be right opposite the main desk so I couldn't help ear-wigging from time to time

I even heard them talking about me when they thought I was asleep.

Seriously, you looked sooo well. (and I love the photos on your website - your dts are beautiful)

miniegg · 21/07/2007 18:35

just to let you know that I have made contact with Marslady and she doesn't have any clients till August so is happy to stand in for my doula if I go into labour this weekend/monday!! This is brilliant news and I feel much better. Thank you very much mumsnetters - it never occured to me I would be able to find someone at such short notice.

Oh yes I would be hoping I go into labour before your normal doula gets back.....just from my year on MN I would move to London for my next baby just so Mars could Doula me....

FlameDelacour · 22/07/2007 10:02

Well that's just silly SMS, all that moving stress when pregnant

I have told Marsy that she is moving to Bournemouth for the end of my next pregnancy (if I have one)

lulumama · 22/07/2007 10:03

i have a spare room and a bath that could double as a birth pool...i can offer a hotel and doula service

can't bake though !

SlightlyMadSpider · 22/07/2007 10:05

Tis alright....I can bake....I'll do it between contractions....

Judy1234 · 22/07/2007 10:31

Sounds like it's been covered. My midwives had cover and send 2 people for the birth anyway
www.birthcentre.com/index.html

My sister used a doula who went into hospital with her for the birth of her twins and that worked well.

Good luck with it.
Also even if you go into hospital it helps. One of my twins was born in hospital but with my midwives who came in with me.

miniegg · 22/07/2007 11:16

hello again
no sign of baby yet but feeling a lot better having Marslady as a back up doula! even if my doula doesn't come back to London tomorrow night as promised lovely Mars says she can cover as she hasn't got another client this week
thanks so much for your help everyone...

i saw that too , SMS !

my friend had a hombirth, and her husband made a cake, that he popped into the oven when she was getting into established labour...baby was born before the cake was ready ! and we had fresh warm cake and champagne , 30 minutes after the baby was born !

BreeVanDerCampLGJ · 22/07/2007 12:00

Bree wanders off wondering if Mars is now housebound, due to her head being too big to get through all the doors in the house.
