What happened if you went into labour before your elec c section date?

Hi all,

C section booked for next tue!
If you went into labour before the date did they do an emergency c section?

Been having Braxton Hicks since sunday morning, pretty regular but no pain. They annoyed me all last night, and this morning they aren't as regular at all (haven't timed them) but a couple of them have come with a period pain.
Should i be worried?!
They are less noticeable when I'm moving around etc so that's good but I'm worried she's gonna come this week instead! (38weeks now)

Any advice welcome!

I guess it depends on the reason for the elcs? Traumatic previous birth etc, you may have to assert yourself to the hospital that you will NOT be having a VB (although it could be unavoidable if birth is imminent). If it's for health reasons, then it's straight to hospital either under your own steam or ambulance. Have a talk with your midwife.

Elmo311 · 01/04/2019 09:02

@Her0utdoors Failure to progress last time, 3 days of back to back labour and never got past 3cm.
This time it's been recommended i have a c section because there is only an 11month gap between the two....

I'm sure when I had my elective c section, they said if I go into labour or my waters break, it will have to be an emergency caesarean and would need to go in immediately.

Then again it is dangerous for me to go into labour and have too many contractions as I had to have a section of my uterus cut out due to having an ectopic pregnancy a few years before so would most likely rupture.

Hollowvictory · 01/04/2019 09:19

This happened to me. I had an emergency c section. Was about a month before my planned section. Twins. I had to wait a long time though, started about 1am, straight to hospital (you don't wait at home with twins), at 6am transferred to ano hospital by ambulance as insufficient nicu beds at orig hospital, had section about 11am thank god the relief of the epidural or whatever it is was indescribable.

This happened to my DSIL. Baby was breech. She went into hospital at about 3pm and they said they'd fit her in for the c-section when they could but before the labour progressed too far. She was put on a ward and went through some of the labour, including waters breaking. Then she had the surgery at about 2am.

Chocolatecoffeeaddict · 01/04/2019 12:37

This happened to me at 37 weeks, when I was booked in for a c section at 39 weeks. They checked me over, said I was in labour then did the c section an hour later. It was classed as an emergency but it was a lot calmer than my first real emergency c section.

WhatNow40 · 01/04/2019 13:31

I had an elective booked due to breech and a problem with my joints. I went in to labour and progressed very rapidly. I had to insist on the CS as all MW were pushing me to deliver vaginally. We only just made it, I went from 3cm to 9cm in 45mins. I'm sure you will be fine, especially if they have plenty of time to slot you in. They will prioritise women in labour whose babies are in distress, but it sounds like you will have enough time to wait. Best of luck! Thanks

Happened to me. I turned up at the hospital at 3am with a 3 year old in tow as we couldn't get anyone to answer their phones. They confirmed I was in labour. The midwives did push trying for a vbac a bit but when I pointed out that according to everyone who had a feel of my pelvis last time, it's sub-optimal and that dc1 got stuck at full dilation, couldn't be pulled out with forceps and that I tried to leave him in NICU because of a psychotic break which everyone blamed on my experiences plus this baby's head was measuring 42 weeks at 37...they went and got a doctor. Dc2 was delivered at 6am by which point I was already 6 cms. It was a million times better than I expected (was intending having a GA due to my experiences the first time around), much more like an elective.

The Consultant who ended up delivering dc2 (came in for an emergency and was just leaving when I phoned up and decided to stay due all the big mental health flags on my file) said that usually they offer the choice but should ultimately honour the c-section if that's what you want.

If you don't, then you should have a choice. Because I'd signed the consent form at week 32, they wouldn't proceed until I gave verbal consent which they asked for...after the spinal. The child in me considered saying "no" until I saw the look on the consultant's face.

Hi all, thanks for your responses! Since midday I've been having menstral cramps alongside the BH's. The contraction starts in my butt (it feels like!) And they last 30 seconds, happening every 8mins or so. I'm fine in between.
I callee L&D triage, and they basically said i have to wait to go in until the contractions are worse (more painful and regular) and then they will assess me....i feel it's unfair that I will be left in pain at home for hours, but what can i do?!
I thought that if i was in early labour, with a planned c section they'd cut all that out, but obviously not :(

I just don't want things to go the way they did with my son!

Gonna have a bath and lie down in the hope /micrale they stop!

Help!

@Elmo311 - I had a section but thankfully all went as planned and I didn't start early. They did say that any hint of labour to go in asap and I could still have the section.

That's awful that you're having to wait, what a worry! Have you just called once? X

Elmo311 · 02/04/2019 03:28

@Yakadee I've called twice, and still told the same thing!
I'm still having contractions although they are way more spaced out now and i can sleep inbetween but they wake me up when they come (every 15 mins approx i think) i feel like it's going to be a while before i can go in :( feeling really let down by them!

I'm 38w and booked in for next Tuesday!!!

My hospital said slightest sign to call and go in and they would do a c section. I suggest just turning up to MAU and they can do the assessment - u should get an emergency section if ur in any type of labour.

Elmo311 · 02/04/2019 04:25

@NChangeForNoReason i love it when people are awake like me! Haha
Ah wow, that's pretty cool!

I don't know what's going on with my hospital tbh, they seem really reluctant to intervene at this stage?
When i called she said she didn't think i was in labour because i sound fine.....of course i sound fine, I'm calling you in between contractions and also I'm in early labour you douchebag! (Thought it but didn't say!)

I've managed to get 2 hours sleep but that is all.
I'm just so confused as to why they'd want me to contine like this :(

Maybe you're right i should just go in but it's complicated as i have friends on hold for childcare but don't want to mess them around either.

Hope you don't go into labour early like me and everything goes to plan with your c section, :)

coldlocation · 04/04/2019 19:46

I had breech and footling breech Dt's but went into spontaneous labour 4 days prior to planned section....so it was straight in for an emergency Cs.

Yakadee · 04/04/2019 20:30

@Elmo311 - congratulations x

OneMoreWish · 08/04/2019 21:29

Happened to me - 1st DC was c-section as breech, requested c section for 2nd too (request accepted no probs, no pressure to VBAC)

Due date was Friday, ELCS booked in for Wednesday, which was too close to the wire for my liking, but obviously no choice.

Went into labour (back contractions) 3am Tuesday morning, went to hospital around 9am, told I was 2cm. Asked what I wanted to do, i.e. still go for theatre, said Yes so got prepped etc.

Contractions ramped up, wheelchaired to theatre (6cm by now), asked one last time if I still wanted c-section, then it was performed as semi-emergency, but didn’t feel much more frenzied than my first scheduled one.

So, all in all still a positive experience just 24 hrs early! Glad it worked out for you Elmo 👍🏻

Bobojangles · 26/04/2019 09:03

Elective section booked due to traumatic first birth. Waters went 2 weeks before my section date, they originally bumped me up to the following morning but then things started to progress quickly so they made sure I still wanted a section and rushed me to theatre

DS was on his way by the time they had the spinal in! Out after 15 minutes of pushing, total labour time of 1.5 hours! Fantastic experience in the end lol

However they where very respectful of my decision to have a section throughout and I never felt pushed to go for vaginal delivery, DS just had a different idea!

Shootingstar1115 · 26/04/2019 19:18

That really depends on the reason for a c section. I had an emergency with my first because of failure to progress and my son was in distress. I opted for an elective with my second as my first has additional needs and knowing a date to organise childcare was great but there was no reason I couldn’t try give birth naturally so I guess they would have just let it happen.

If you are having a section because you cannot physically give birth for whatever reason then went into labour you would have to call them straight away, they might bring you down for a section ASAP.
