Experiences of teicoplanin use in labour? Any obstetricians / previous users around?

I have group b strep and am allergic to penicillin. The alternative I am being offered is teicoplanin. However I have got myself into a bit of a state about this having read that this drug has a higher rate of severe allergic reaction than others and that it isn't safe in pregnancy. My anxiety about it is compounded by the fact that none of the midwives had heard of it and are really confused about it. So I feel like nobody has been given it before!

Does anybody have any experience of having been given / of prescribing this antibiotic in these circumstances? I tried to raise these concerns with the obstetrician but just got the standard "all antibiotics come with a risk" response.

Please be gentle - could go into labour any second now and am feeling very weepy and confused about it. I'm concerned about harming my baby with this antibiotic and am already very anxious about the potential consequences of the group b strep on the baby after birth.

I am unable to take clindamycin as the trust forgot to test for resistance to it so I am being offered teicoplanin because of this.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Also having read about babies developing resistance to the antibiotics as a result of having it in labour (thus leaving them more vulnerable to other blood infections) im starting to question if IV antibiotics are a good idea at all. Help!

Hi, I just wondered what you did in the end? I'm in exactly the same situation now and am so scared and confused I just don't know what to do. If I could have penicillin I'd go for the antibiotics but I'm really worried about the effects of the alternative antibiotics so just can't make a decision and am a nervous wreck!
