How long are you in hospital for induction?

I'm booked for induction for diabetes and a large baby - estimated. How long should I expect to be in hospital? Is my OH permitted to stay the whole time or will he be going back and fourth? I was told induction can take 2-3 days and if I need a caesarean, will be another 2-3 days afterwards, so is it common to be in hospital for 5-6 days?

Depends how long it takes and whether it works. I would imagine so long as it works and your delivery is straight forward you would be out next day latest.

I was induced. They don’t tend to let you hang around for 2-3 days after. They want the baby out within 24 hours.

Visiting hours will depend on the hospital - check with them.

Fwiw I was induced on a Wednesday first thing, I didn't go in to labour - no contractions, no dilation. Dh went at home when visiting hours ended each day, I was delivered by c-section on Friday evening, went home Sunday morning.

I was out the same day as I delivered, with both inductions.

Both inductions took a while to get started, I think first time total stay was 72 hours, and same with second actually.

Second would have been quicker if things hadn’t gone wrong during lessary insertion.

Partners can stay, but I wouldn’t recommend it.

I think everyone will have different answer as it depends on so many things.

If it helps, I was in for 2 nights. The first night because nothing had happened yet, then had the baby at 4pm the next day. Stayed in overnight and went home the next afternoon. No C section needed though.

The baby will need their sugars monitoring after birth for a couple of days so you'll be in till they're ok. I've had GD three times and the shortest stay after birth was a little over 2 days. Depends on hospital as to when your OH will be allowed to visit/stay.

My inductions were at 34, 37 and 38 weeks. The 38 weeks was the quickest, pessary put in at teatime and birth was at 4.55am. Longest was 34 weeks and that was about 24 hours from first pessary to birth, only got exciting in the last 6 hours or so though.

Thank you for your responses. How will we know when it is okay to send OH away? What if my labour begins during the night after visitng hours? Will he really not be permitted to stay?

How long does it take from the first pessary until the birth?

My induction took only 2 hrs.

I.went in on wednesday morning and left on friday morning. Induced at 37.5 weeks due to GD and big baby.

Got there about 9 am, an hour on a BP monitor and with a belly monitor to che ck baby, then waiting around for someone to be free to.insert the pessary. That was done around lunch time, then another 30 mins of monitoring.

After that just hung around waiting, send hubby home around 6 as no point both of us being bored, had some dinner, wandered around, read books, watched tv, tried to sleep which wasn't very successful due to the mega hot temperature of the ward.

Next day, another 30 mins of monitoring, waiting around for someone to check progress of the pessary. Called DH to.come back about 11ish. About 1pm the pessary was removed and waters broken.

Everything kicked off pretty quick after that, baby was born by 6pm. DH went home about 8pm and me and DD went to the ward for some sleep.

Had to stay overnight as they wanted 3 glucose readings from baby, all was fine so i called a taxi about 9am and home for 9.15. Sent DH a text from the taxi to say we were on the way home.

Had a lady in the bed next to mine who's DH stayed all night and i found it really intrusive. At points during the night i was sat with my boobs out trying to breastfeed, the nurses kept opening the curtains to check something and forgetting to.close them again so this stranger bloke had an eye full every time.

I think if you have a private room its fine but if youre on a ward with other women then DH should leave for the night.

I was induced by pessary at 10pm, contractions started at 4.30am. Baby was born 1pm.

My friend was induced. Had multiple pessarys and the drip, Ended up with a csection after 4 days as she wouldn't progress.

Went in Monday 8am for induction, it failed so was listed for a section Wednesday morning but cancelled around 7pm as they had a few emergencies, I asked could we go home overnight so we did and back at 7am and had section 2pm Thursday DP had to leave that night around 9pm but came back at 9am and we were discharged at lunch time Friday

There's no answer to how long it will take after they put pessary in OP, sometimes a couple hours, sometimes it doesn't happen at all. It's just one of those things you have to go with - one things for sure, and that the baby will be coming out one way or another before you come out of hospital again. They don't like you to leave once the process is started.

I had pessary in at 5pm Wednesday, hormone drip at 6pm Thursday, gave birth to DD at 3am Friday and was home by midnight that night. My DH went home on the Wednesday evening (for his own sanity!) but stayed all day Thursday, Thursday night and all day Friday.

If your induction and labour are straightforward, there's no reason for them to keep you longer than they need.

How long does it take from the first pessary until the birth?

I was given pessaries from Thursday morning and had DS on Saturday afternoon after they decided the pessaries were doing nothing for me and put me on a drip.

My first induction took 3 days. It was for gestational diabetes so I was kept in for 2 full days afterwards to monitor mine and the babies sugar levels. We were in for another 2 days due to my son having jaundice.
The second induction failed and and I had a c-section - I was out within 2 days.
Basically I don’t think you can plan these things. For some it will be quick others induction will be slow.
Both times my husband had to go home at 10pm and could come back in at 8am. I was induced at 1am the second time so he was allowed to stay for that.

Forgot to say each hospital will be different on when partners are allowed in. I’d ask your midwife. Or do a tour of the labour ward if they offer own

I was induced because I had a bad cold and a large baby so couldn’t breathe very well!

It was started at midday on Monday and I delivered at 4pm on the Wednesday. Not much was happening on Monday night so DH went home. On the Tuesday night, they had decided to break my waters as soon as a delivery room was available so he got to stay. I was in hospital until the Saturday evening - precautionary antibiotics for DD as they suspected Group B Strep and an eventual blood transfusion for me. We had a private room so after the first night, DH stayed with us.

I’ve had friends who have been induced and delivers within 8 hours. There really are a lot of variables!

I was induced, absolutely nothing happened for 24 hours so they did it again, another 9 hours later nothing to write home about, I was dialated 1cm so they broke my water and started the drip, 27 hours I was only at 8cm and wheeled off for an emergency c-section. I was then in hospital for 6 days after (that was with twins though).

I sent DH home, not all the other women on the ward want men hanging about when they are at their most vulnerable and also he was more use after getting some proper sleep and that was never going to happen with him there, much more practical for him to go home and be called should we need him.

I was induced with baby no3, I had some gel and a mini sweep at 11am baby born bang on 8pm that evening.
Husband went home around midnight, came back I when he'd done school run at 9.30 next day and we were all home by lunchtime

It depends on your hospital as to whether DH can stay and when. My hospital allowed partners at all times and permitted them to stay over so he was there the entire labour and the 2 days after.

I wasn't induced but had high blood pressure once labour started so wasn't allowed home so did the entire labour in the hospital.

If it's a hospital where DH can't stay, they'll call him to tell him when it's time to come back, regardless of the time of day/night.

(Although I did send him home for a few hours each day after birth to get some sleep and pick up things)

Re your question about OH. My hospital allowed him to stay but I sent him home. I was warned it could take 4 days, it made sense for him to get some sleep.

When my waters broke and contractions started at 4.30, I didnt contact him as it was manageable. When they transferred me to labour ward at 6.30am I called him and woke him up, he joined me at 7.

You won't necessarily be kept in for your baby's blood sugar to be monitored, I wasn't. I did stay in for 2 days but that was because we were still mastering feeding. His blood sugar was only taken once or twice and they were happy with it so that was that.

I was induced with both of mine. Both very overdue.

With #1 I was 16 days late as hospital had been closed to admissions. I was taken straight into my own room in delivery suite. Dc was born within 12 hrs and we went home about 6 hrs later. DH was with me the whole time.

With #2 I first went to maternity ward, induction started, ds was allowed to stay with me during the day but they cannot stay overnight. I went into labour early evening so not really an issue for us. Dc2 was born very quickly - 4 hrs from waters being broken. We were home again the next morning.

You really can’t predict these things!
