When should I expect to have my first period following giving birth?

I had my baby almost 4 weeks ago and had the usual loss of blood etc during the weeks after but this had more or less stopped and then today I have noticed a light blood loss and wondered whether this might be a period? Does anyone know? (sorry details a bit gross...)

Might still be post-natal stuff (can't remember proper name!!). Mine came and went for a good 6 weeks both times, seemed to reappear when I'd overdone it a bit in the day.

depends on whether or not you are breastfeeding

I shouldn't think its a period. My bleeding stopped and started again a couple of times after ds's birth.(Didnt get a period until I had almost stopped breastfeeding at 4 months). Also happened to my friend whose hv said she might be overdoing things and to take it easy (yeah, right, with a newborn to look after...)

Probably nothing to worry about.

mine came and went for 6 weeks too... dried up totally a couple of times for a few days then gushed again.

are you bf-ing?

MaeWest · 29/05/2007 20:01

Blood loss can go on for about 4 weeks I think - mine was a bit stop-start towards the end. Got my first period when my DS was 4 months old (co-incided with him going a bit longer between feeds at night) but then didn't get another for 2 months.

It's a bit "how long is a piece of string" really. Basically the answer is that they come back when they do!

Are you breast-feeding? They sometimes come back more quickly if you're not.

When I had dd I found that lochia afterwards came and went for weeks - might it be that?

MonkeyandBabyBoo · 29/05/2007 20:01

I had blood loss for over 8 weeks after having my dd last year, then my period seemed to start on a regular cycle after that. However, if you are breast feeding then your period shouldn't start until after you have finished bf.

lots of advice already but thought I'd let you know that I stopped bleeding after about 3 weeks then got my period at 4 weeks. wasn't sure if it was till the next month when it appeared again. I was breastfeeding (still am!) but still got regular periods!

Jan with my first baby I had lochia for about 2 weeks and got my period exactly 6 weeks after the birth.
