Hi everyone,

After yet ANOTHER bleed (and another one since being in here) my doc has said I should have an amnio to check for lung maturity and if it is ok they will go ahead with an induction. She has just left the room now and is going to come back with a time for the amnio to be done but it will be at some point today. .
I do still have the option of waiting one more week when I will be almost 37 weeks before the induction but I will probably have to stay in hospital until then. The bleeds are becomming more and more frequent (due to placenta abruption) so the longer we leave it the riskier a crash c-section becomes. I am in a bit of a dilema as to whether I should wait - but at the moment I am thinking I really wouldn't mind the last 18 weeks of strict bedrest and constant hospital admissions to be over. Am being reassured that most babies born at this stage do really well with very few problems. I know the best place for it is still inside me if everything were ok - but there is a risk that if the placenta pulls away completely then it would be a disaster. Just dont want to make a decision which could result in a poorly baby for a while. . My DH has bought in the laptop so hopefully will be able to keep you updated on any decisions we make - and possibly a live labour thread from the USA!

how are things going today usagal?

usagal · 22/05/2007 18:05

hi everyone!
Feeling a tad more frustrated today. The doc ordered some sort of scan which was a test (?) - It involved measuring how much the baby moved and othet stuff. It got a mark out of 8. The sonographer said that she didn't think the baby woulod pass as it wasn't moving at all. She then gave it a few extra minutes (had to move a certain number of times within 30 mins) and it made two very small movements so it passed! Obviously I was pleased but I was still a little worried that it only passed by the skin of its teeth so I was monitored for half an hour afterwards. Heart rate was fine. I am obviously happy that everyhting is going ok but it is tricky to deal with all these minor scares. Have nothing to do except watch TV.
The doc is still not sure if I will have to have another amnio before my planned induction. I really really hope not. - I soooo wanted to go into labour by myself before the induction - but as I am not even 37 weeks I think the chances are low. The strong contractions I had which caused my cervix to begin to dilate I think were caused by the amnio (x5!). Also the fact that I am on bed rest means that I am really restricted in my movements. I am not on 24 hr monitoring - but I am not allowed to walk around the corridors. (They are scared of me making the abruption worses as I have had a little bleeding) I am doing a fair bit of nipple stimulation - (it is really starting to make my boobs leak though - does this mean I am doing it right?).
I know I will have the baby soon and trying to stay positive - but each hour is like a day at the moment!
Thanks for asking about the children! They are fine - having great fun playing with my fantastic neighbour's kids! Dh is going to be able to spend most of the day with me today which will cheer me up!

^4. Nipple stimulation can be done successfully and uterine hyper stimulation may be avoided by following this protocol from Maternity Nursing: Family, Newborn, and Women's Health Care by Reeder, Martin and Koniak-Griffin:

  • roll nipples between thumb and forefingers for 2 minutes
  • rest for 3 minutes repeat rolling/resting for 20 minutes*increase rolling to 3 minutes and decrease resting to 2 minutes for 20 minutes if inadequate contractions occur after initial 20 mins^

Am feeling very frustrated on your behalf too! Wish there was something I could actually do!

Hi everyone!
Had some more news - but nothing really exciting. After having May 24th on my calander for for months as being the day of my induction the doc came in this morning and it is off. . They are unable to do another amnio as there are no pockets of fluid accessible so they are unable to check for lung maturity. She said they would deffo go ahead at the weekend cos I will then be 37 weeks and they wont need the amnio. Not allowed home in the mean time. I know it is better for the baby to stay inside as long as poss - but I have been geared up for today for so long after weeks of bedrest. Have been blubbing all morning. Also the doc on call over the weekend is the one I don't like, (She is very nasty to the nurses and she f*ed up my amnio last time). She also never bothers to do her rounds till about 4 in the afternoon.

Would it be worth asking if you could be started on the Monday?.......

usagal · 24/05/2007 17:55

I probably could ask - I know the doc on Monday is really nice. It is just even longer to spend in this effing hospital. My father in law is out here now so he can look after the children whilst dh is here with me - so hopefully I will feel less bored and lonely. I don't think there has been a fixed time arranged for the induction yet - so it is a possibility. Don't want it to look like I am being a pain in the arse though. Also the doc is not likely to have a really prominant role in the birth - it is more the nurse who is with you - and have no choice about that. Most seem really nice though

But the main thing is how comfortable you are going to feel with the caregivers when you are induced. Induction can be a difficult thing to go through so it would be helpful for you to feel trustful and confident with who's around, iyswim? If you are tense knowing this doc is around while you are being induced it's not going to make it any easier.

I don't mean to worry you but I'd like you to consider this when deciding when to have your induction. I appreciate how fed up you are and that yet another day would seem like too much, so please think about what is important to YOU, not the HCPs, or even dh or in-laws. OK?

Obviously if things need to start earlier then you'll make a suitable judgement call at the time!

Stay strong! We're all rooting for you!

hertsnessex · 24/05/2007 18:12

just seen this - and to let you know i was induced at 36wks with both my boys and had 6 and 7hr labours - ds1 was 5lb 12oz and ds2 was 7lb 13oz! so both good sizes.

best of luck.
