I’m only 23 so babies are long way off for the moment. I’ve always wanted children but I’ve been scared of the idea of child birth for a long time and I hate the idea of needles always been terrified I hate being awake for even minor things that only envolve local anasetic. I get worked up so badly over things. I’ve got the money to go private I don’t think there are any by me but say if I went to the Lindo wing, Portland Chelsea and Westminster would they allow that or should I rule out having children

Yes, a csection can be done under general anaesthetic but is riskier than csection under a spinal block.

Any consultant (U.K.), OBGyn in North America, will discuss it with you and determine the best way for you to give birth.

I do have a friend who had an elective csection privately in a London hospital so it can be done. It was the right decision for her.

It sounds like you have anxiety issues that should maybe be dealt with before getting pregnant. As you say, you are young and gave time yet.

In order to do the c/s you will however need an intravenous drip, and bladder catheter. During a normal pregnancy monitoring involves blood tests and many times injections. Best to work through your fears first.

I had a c-section with a general anaesthetic. I had elected to have a c-section as I suffered with vaginismus for years and had managed to overcome it. However, my consultant agreed that if I was to have a difficult vaginal birth it would set me back years. As it happened I needed to have a c-section anyway as my son had stopped growing and they decided he needed to be born. I asked for a general anaesthetic as the thought of being awake totally freaked me out. I have never felt that I missed out on the birth as I'm pretty sure I would have been traumatised! I only ever had one child as couldn't face going through it again.

What is it that you're scared of specifically wrt being awake OP? You can refuse consent to anything other than a general, but they're more risky usually than a spinal. I wonder if it would help to talk through the reasons why, not necessarily here but perhaps with a professional if that's better? Or would it help to read about positive experiences from women who had sections they were awake for?

Just all of it I’m scared of being pregnant to I hate touching people’s bumbs I hate the thought of a baby being inside me. All the blood to I can’t deal with being awake and not feeling anything. I video popped up on my fb about a c section and it made me feel awful watching it I felt sick at the thought of it happening to me

If you're so scared of surgery why not consider vaginal birth?

It sounds like you may not be mentally ready for pregnancy OP. Honestly I wouldn’t stress about it. Just don’t have them. Children aren’t for everyone.

Even with a GA you would have to have a cannula put in. In any case they wouldn't allow it. You need multiple blood tests and jabs throughout pregnancy anyway.

I really would stop stressing about what you might or might not do in the future. If the thoughts of having babies doesn't sound good then you don't have to!

I want children I would have them now I love babies I’m very maternal. But as soon as I think of birth and being pregnant I cross my legs and feel sick. My needle phobia isn’t as bad I can tolerate needles now but being awake while being cut open makes me want to heave

I have endometriosis so having kids probably won’t be easy anyway I’ve considered adoption and my partner has said he wouldn’t mind and he would love to be a dad but if it didn’t happen naturally we can find away

I've just said this on another thread, but maybe it will reassure you. A friend of mine was a lot like you - very, very scared of childbirth. She always said that, although she wanted to be a mum, she could never give birth and would therefore have to either remain childless or think about adoption or surrogacy.

She has just given birth to a gorgeous baby boy. She had a homebirth and no pain relief, which is something I never thought she would even contemplate. I'm not saying ELCS (under GA or otherwise) shouldn't be an option too btw, but I would just say keep an open mind and maybe speak with someone about your anxiety about this.

As well as the injections/ blood tests described by pp, my c sections also involved 10 days of blood thinning injections , self administered. And anti d jabs because of my blood group.

I honestly think for most people once the baby is in there for 9 months you're just so excited about getting it out that it just becomes a means to an end. I had twins and before I got to about 6 months I was fairly frightened about the prospect of birth, but it got too a stage where I was sick of being pregnant and just wanted them out! I really think you're over thinking. If you want a baby just do it and go with the flow until it gets near the birth time, THEN assess how you feel.

You can have private or NHS elective c section under epidural. I would have s general. You would be out of it for ages after and you will miss out on those special first few hours.

I hated pregnancy. I hated the whole idea of it. I will never do it again. I think some counselling will definitely help you deal with the fact that something is growing inside you, needles etc. Good luck
