What pain relief did you go for and recommend?

What pain relief did you opt for, would you recommend it and opt again?

Not long to go until labour and I’m a bit nervous. I have put in labour plan I’m open to anything.

Labour went fast with baby no.2 and only got G&A and it’s scared me for this time.

I went for gas and air and diamorphine which worked out well for me. Took the edge off at least and I felt I could cope. Would opt for it again, though I'm open to anything. Anything to get through it! 😂

WiIdfire · 27/09/2017 20:31

Paracetamol
Codeine x3
TENS
Pethidine
Gas and air
And finally epidural.

It was quite a long labour...

MrsGB2225 · 27/09/2017 20:32

A waterbirth! Helped the pain more than TENS and G&A for me.

asongforthelovers · 27/09/2017 20:37

Ear plugs should definitely be provided, hehe.

My 2nd was back to back, it was quite quick induction but very intense. I think that’s what’s made me nervous this time round.

Just out hospital as baby going from transverse to head down, keep thinking he will move and I’ll end up getting emergency section.

Will just need to brace myself and see how it goes.

I asked for an epidural because I thought I can't cope with this for hours, when anethatist arrived I was told it was too late and had baby soon after. With next 2 I knew I could go without so had gas and air. I had relatively quick labours though and you can't know that in advance.

Anaesthetist

I’m hoping I go in and baby slides out 😁.

1st labour was quick, 2nd was quicker, I’m hoping 3rd is a bit better 🤞

I was stuck at 3cm dilated and very very tired and was going to be put on the drip - they were also going to have to ramp it up and catch up time as I had been induced with gel and had extra time for things to get going but I seemed to stall. Because of this I requested an epidural - I was terrified to have it done, however found it almost painless (tiny little needle in my back, no worse than a blood test) it made a huge difference, I could still feel the contraction pressure so knew when to push, I also had a good recovery with nothing but the occasional back pain which went within a few days. I would have another epidural in a heart beat. A doctor came in half way through and was like 'ah there's the face of an epidural' Smile not bad going considering I had a ventouse delivery - big 9lb 4 baby!

ashley65 · 30/09/2017 16:32

In my case, doctor gave me Augmentin (325mg) as pain killer. It was really effective. My pain reduced to 50 to 70%. Mostly doctors used paracetamol for reducing pain. Paracetamol is safe for baby. While Augmentin is a high dose medicine and has sever side effects. During labour, I didn't use any medicine. My pain was not too much sever. It was too little to feel. Even I didn't told my midwife till morning. I used Augmentin after baby birth for the stitches pain. Only first pregnancy experience is like nightmare because you are not aware of actual scene. I don't think I will be nervous in my second pregnancy. My prayers are with you. Best wishes for you.

TiramisuQueenoftheFaeries · 30/09/2017 16:36

Just TENS and water, in the end. The water was great and the TENS really helped me until I could get into it. I didn't like G&A, it just made me feel spaced out but still in pain, which I found unpleasant but pointless.

It's so individual to the woman and the labour that I'd never presume to advise anyone else though.

RoryItsSnowing · 30/09/2017 16:42

TENS machine definitely, and gas & air. I also had one jab of pethidin for one which I would do again in the same circumstances, let me sleep for a few hours and go from 3cm - 9cm between 4pm and 7pm!

Lisavickers · 30/09/2017 19:02

I'm being induced for the 2nd time on Monday. My first induction I had everything they could offer. For me the TENS got me through the first bit but found I didn't like the feeling of gas & air, pethidine or diamorphine, So ended up with an epidural. I also hated the water lol. It's funny really after watching obem I always wanted a water birth with gas and air only. Everybody is so different so just be really open minded. Knowing what I know now. My only option really is epidural so we will see how we go Monday 🙈

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 30/09/2017 19:06

I had an epidural - didn't want one but was exhausted after 2 weeks of slow labour and baby was stuck. It was bliss. I was allergic to the gas and air, it made me so sick throughout the labour that i had to give up on it.

ConfusionIsNothingNew · 30/09/2017 19:09

Gas and air
Diamorphine
Spinal block for EMCS

I will never forget the feeling of sheer relief lying on the operating table once I was totally pain free!!

ladybirdsaredotty · 01/10/2017 16:06

Salene Shock that's amazing! I thought DD2 was born quickly (2.5 hours start to finish). Expecting DC3 now and I'm hoping it will be fast, but not so fast that DCs 1 and 2 are present Grin

OP I had no time for any pain relief either time. It was pretty sore Wink but it goes! Good luck

ladybirdsaredotty · 01/10/2017 16:09

Sorry, I wrote my post ages after reading yours and had forgotten you're scared of only G and A. I guess go into hospital as soon as you possibly can, especially as like me you labour fast. That's my plan for this time and also what my MW recommended!

Lisavickers · 03/10/2017 17:26

OP I had my little lady this morning and although none of the pain relief suited me as I thought, I tried the new mobile morphine and can honestly say it was amazing. It's fitted with a cannula so can be done really quickly. And the relief is unreal it takes 15 seconds after you press a button at the start of a contraction and literally numbs the body in a wave. It lasts for 1 and half minutes enough to get you through the toughest of contractions xx

asongforthelovers · 03/10/2017 17:55

Thanks @Lisavickers I will see if they do it here. 2nd pessary been inserted, contractions coming every 3 minutes and to be honest I have a feeling it’s not doing anything.

Baby no.3 has not only been an absolute roaster through my pregnancy, it’s the longest and most uncomfortable so far.

I got 2nd pessary at 4:30pm as there was no change. I started getting constant pain after an hour. I’m in constant pain, contractions are coming just under 2 minutes and I’ve been abandoned.

Hopefully someone come back and check me over, if I am not that dilated I will cry.

Baby no.3 has not only been a roaster through my pregnancy he is the longest, most sorest of labours.

Never again 😳

Just saw I have pretty much wrote what I did earlier. My brain has vanished 😰😰

FutureDays · 03/10/2017 20:27

I didn't have any time for any pain relief, after the midwives telling me I wasn't in labour and to stay at home, when I got to hospital there was only 10mins to spare and he was born in triage room.
I got taken to a delivery room after for midwife to fix me up and got given gas and air then, that stuff is awesome and I wish it had been available for the birth.
