How long did you stay in hospital post C/S? Was it too short?

The reason I ask is that a lot of you seem to go home at 2-3 days. Are you fit enough?
We advise women to stay 5 days but I am sure that will change soon more due to shortage of beds. Midwives worry about women going home too soon. What is your experience?

With my 1st I stayed in 4 days, but with my second I had him at noon on the Friday and was home by 4pm on Sunday. Again, I couldn't sleep on noisy ward and was worrying about my 18 month old (1st time I'd left him). Also, my wound was still oozing and hadn't closed properly, so MW was happier for me to go home than stay and be at risk of infection! (Her words!)

lisa111 · 30/03/2007 12:51

DS1 in 1988 14 days, emergency c/s then an infection set into my wound.

DS2 in 1991 5 days, an infection set into my wound and it opened up at home had to go back in hospital for another 2 days.

I did shave both times a didn't have the TED stockings or the injections.

DS3 2006 3 days, no infection i was driving in 1 week, they said not to shave as they thought this caused the infection so i waxed, i had the TED stockings and the injections.

This time was so much easier even with a lot of scare tissue, the surgeon said if i have any more he will refuse to operate, it was so messy in there. I have news for him ttc for no4 asap

Emergency CS on Tuesday lunchtime, home on Friday lunchtime. Everyone else thought too soon - I'm not sure. Think I had an injection twice, didn't have any since leaving hospital... though tbh there were so many different people giving me advice and drugs for any number of things, and my brain was in such a haze that I've no idea any more what I was given and what it was for. Did get the stockings though.

I had a C-Section and the hospital was going to release me after 2 days, but my daughter developed jaundice, so we ended up staying for 6 days. I have to say, that I am grateful that we stayed as long as we did, as the help I received, even though only a small amount was very useful.

minimoose · 30/03/2007 14:39

Had Miles on the Sunday and got out Wed morning. Not probably fit enough to be going home but could not stand being in hospital any longer. Could not get any sleep at all during the night due to mothers constantly ringing for the midwife.

mawbroon · 30/03/2007 14:39

Sorry, haven't read whole thread. DS born Oct 05 by elective as breech. I lost 1500mls of blood but said no to a transfusion so I was a bit faint for a while. Deffo no stockings or injections. Stayed in 3 nights. Was worried about going home so soon, but there was nothing more I could do in the ward. I was able to walk up and down the length of the corridor and to the toilet etc unaided so felt I would be better off at home. Nobody checked to see that we were bf ok and I was given a big bag of painkillers but without any info as to what I had already had that day, whether I could take them all at the same time etc etc.

After 53 hours in labour, had emergency (but not crash) section on Wednesday morning, 8am. Left hospital on Friday evening about 5pm. This was last November, no stockings and no injections. Didn't seem terribly crowded but I know they were understaffed.

Was desperate to get home (had wanted to have homebirth but for various reasons this didn't happen), but knew I had DH and my wonderful parents to help me look after DD. Hospital had been brilliant about help with breastfeeding. One midwife told me staying in too long can cause problems of its own.

mears · 30/03/2007 17:19

I amazed by the lack of stockings and injections in some areas. Blood clots are one of the leading causes of death post delivery!

Had ds on Saturday night 11pm. Off morhine at 10 next morning and taken to showers to clean up. I was covered in blood as I lost two pints of blood. I got the biggest dressing down at 1pm by a midwife who I asked to change baby's bum as I couldn't move at all because of the pain and the faintness and disorientation. She wasn't happy at all even though she was right tht I needed to get moving about, I needed that bit more time. She acted as though I didn't want to change his nappy .
No injections but TEDS on.
I was encouraged to leave on the Tueday morning, the midwives told me this was about the time most left after a c section, including themselves, so believed them as I didn't know any better. I could have done with a little longer as I couldn't physically lay down or turn over in my own bed as my stomach muscles hurt so much it was like I was being stabbed in the stomach. I think they might have been rough with me on the operating table because I went general anethetic. They used forceps as wll, so this might be why I had such pain. Certainly not the easy way out that a lot of ignorant people think.

I had ds on friday morning (elected c/s) and was home by saturday lunchtime, despite nurse disapproval as I had lost a lot of blood. But had had enough of hospital food as i'd been there since monday afternoon as they attempted (to no avail) to induce me and I was going stir crazy! Felt well (and hungry) enough to go home day after the c/s, and was lucky enough to recover quickly. The nurses tried their best to keep me there for a few extra days (think that the security system isn't as much to keep the baby snatchers out but to keep the mothers in! ) but i was determined and kicked up a fuss (blame the hormones), and I still think I made the right decision - felt I could bond better with ds in the comfort of my own home, with dp there to help and support.

purplecow · 03/04/2007 13:32

I was due 3rd March 2006 but had a c section planned for 24th Feb. The baby,Daisy, decided she was coming on 19th Feb! We still had a section although it was classed as emergancy not elected. We had her at 5.26am 19th Feb and I came on 10am 21st feb I tried for the monday but they wouldnt let me. You have to be very strong minded and realistic. It is going to hurt its a major op but you can and will cope. Mind over matter as they say. This is my second c-section and it was as good if not better than the 1st. My 1st they made you stay in for 8 days!! The second(10years later) its only 3-4 max. Good luck to all you lovely belly ladies who are due a c-section youre a woman you can cope with anything xx

castlesintheair · 03/04/2007 13:33

I was turfed out after 3 nights each time. I would have loved to stay longer in hospital, especially after no.3.

Blondie3 · 07/04/2007 22:48

Personally, I could'nt get out of hospital quick enough! I was in hospital for 6 days in all but 4 days following an emergency C-Section. I felt I had a quick recovery and was moving around well etc. The hospital staff would have prefered me to of stayed for another day, but I begged them to let me go and to be honest if my request had been refused I probably would of walked out anyway because the longer I was there the more stressed out I was getting.

dueat44 · 09/04/2007 18:31

Baby Clover born on Monday, we left 9 days later. She was a 'gaspy' baby, they were afraid of lung infection and she was put onto a long course of intravenous ABs. We couldn't leave until these were finished - I really wanted to go home, but no way.

madness · 09/04/2007 18:47

ds born thursday afternoon, home saterday morning after lot of begging. Felt fine at home, had dh to help.
now ds himself those first days, that is another story

aintnomountainhighenough · 09/04/2007 21:29

I was induced on a Sunday had DS on the Monday am and left hospital the following Monday - so lots of days in hospital for me. Whilst is was a traumatic time due to complications because I was fine I actually believe it meant that I healed a lot quicker. Whilst I had me DH at home I didn't have any other help and knowing what I am like I would have definitely overdone it.

sleepyjo · 09/04/2007 21:40

I had emergency c-section last June ( being induced and baby not happy!). Op was about 9pm. Next morning sat in chair, stood up and by pm had showered and removed dressing. Had to hassle loads for help with breast feeding/ bathing, but had a good nights sleep cos I complained about the noise, so they left me in the ward on my own! Got discharged following day - a day earlier that I should have, but I was SO well and the baby was great too. Had lots of help from Mum and hubby, but was really lucky that I never really suffered discomfort - no probs sleeping , or feeding baby.

kid · 09/04/2007 21:44

I went in on Wednesday, had DD emergency cs on Friday, came home Monday. Lots of support at home.

DS born Wednesday, discharged Friday. I wanted to come home but I was in lots of pain and I didn't know what to do with myself. DH was off for 4 weeks but I was just in agony for several weeks and they only gave me paracetmol for pain relief

hester · 09/04/2007 22:14

Hi mears. I spent two nights in hospital after emergency CS. I feel I was discharged too early. I laboured through Sunday and Monday nights, had dd early Tuesday morning, got three hours sleep Tuesday night, four broken hours tuesday night, and was then discharged feeling dazed with sleep deprivation and barely able to get up and down to look after dd. I don't remember any injections, but then I was pretty out of it. Two weeks after getting home I finally unpacked my hospital bag and found the painkillers they sent me home with - I really hadn't taken in that I had these (or indeed much else) at the time. Unusually for London, I had very good postnatal care and frankly I needed a bit more of it. I got home very tired, very shocked and not physically or mentally ready for what came next.

shauna72 · 09/04/2007 22:31

Hi Mears,
I had an semi-elective CS on Wed morning. I had a horrendous night on the wed with a screaming for 8 hour baby with minimal support. I couldn't settle her at all, esp with all the meconium.Thurs was awful just as I was so tired. They advised I stayed until sat but I got more help at home. So although I wanted to stay on one hand, I was getting little help or support so I left on Fri. But they didn't even give me any TTOs and on Sat I was in absolute agony and could hardly walk when my lovely midwife came in. I was very disappointed in the care on the ward, I realise they are very busy but I wanted help with the b/f. I had broken my back and found the getting out of bed to my dd very difficult and no-one helped me at all.

LilRedWG · 09/04/2007 22:36

Spent six nights in hospital after an elective CS. Support was great, in private room for four nights and on ward with support of special care nursery nurses for remaining two.

I had horrific SPD and was still on crutches for months after birth. However, by the sixth night I'd had enough and wanted out so had to pretend I didn't need my crutches when the physio was around the next morning in order for them to discharge me. DD had pretty bad jaundice too, so we had to wait for that to start to clear before discharge.

On the whole, we spent about the right amount of time in hospital, didn't feel rushed to leave, and very supported most of the time.

LilRedWG · 09/04/2007 22:37

Meant to add, excellent support once at home from midwife and HV.
