How long did you stay in hospital post C/S? Was it too short?

The reason I ask is that a lot of you seem to go home at 2-3 days. Are you fit enough?
We advise women to stay 5 days but I am sure that will change soon more due to shortage of beds. Midwives worry about women going home too soon. What is your experience?

Went home on the morning of day 2 both times - couldn't wait to get out esp first time as I got 100% more support at home than while I was in! Second time the hospital was great but I was so bored up and about and wanted to go. Recovered well both times, no complications. Would do the same next time too!

violetsmum · 25/03/2007 16:39

stayed for 5 days! but only 'cos dd had a few little probs with pneumonia and then infected tummy button - couldn't wait to leave as had already been in hospital 5 days pre-partum

snookie28 · 25/03/2007 21:18

I was at the Southern General in Glasgow and stayed for 5 days. The midwives there couldn't have been nicer and helped me tremendously with my awful breastfeeding probs. I was in a room with 2 beds but as I was by the window then it seemed private (with ensuite toilet and shower room) Next time (if I can't have a VBAC) I would probably want to leave a day or so earlier but could not imagine being fit to leave within 1 or 2 days.

I had my C section on the Friday night and was home for lunch on the Monday. I'd have gone earlier if I'd been allowed. They gave in to me on the Monday!

I was definitely ready to get out. I hated the hospital ward experience and didn't fell like I could relax with DD at all whilst there.

I was up and showering early on on the Saturday morning, ready for my breakfast. Went into single room that lunch time but still longed for privay of my own home and my own bed, and to have DH around for support too.

I was able to have an easy time when out. My mum had 5 days paid dependant's leave, used over a fortnight, and Dh took some days off too. My mum was a real star and took care of stuff int he house a lot - cleaning, cooking, watching DD, etc. and even entertaining - so I could get the extra naps I needed or even just some rest. Helped being on a ground floor flat at the time too, as no stairs to keep navigating.

snookie28 · 25/03/2007 21:20

Just to add the midwives said that I could stay as long as I wanted until I felt ready. They are closing one of the maternity hospitals in Glasgow so will be interesting to see whether they are as accomodating and flexible when this happens

Plibble · 25/03/2007 21:22

I had DD on the Friday and went home on the Monday... and promptly boomeranged back to the hospital on Tuesday when the community midwife took my blood pressure and went pale.
Although ward conditions were horrid: dirty, noisy, hot and generally crap (and the care wasn't great either) I do think I would have been better off staying in hospital for a bit longer. At the very least it would have stopped me going for a walk to the shops the next day (a gentle 20 minute walk being within my definition of "taking it easy"). Of course, a longer stay in a nicer hospital ward, maybe with my own room, would have been the ideal.

I had ds on the Sunday afternoon and they were wanting to push me out on the Weds ( big very busy hospital), luckily i had the option of going to another hospital (which is lovely but just midwives so not very busy) till the Friday, i didnt feel up to going home on the Weds at all!

pucca · 25/03/2007 21:30

Forgot to add, the big main hospital didn't pick up on the fact my iron levels were through the floor (no wonder i felt so terrible) so they would have sent me home like this, it was the quiet hospital who picked up on this and gave me iron tablets.

Adorabelle · 25/03/2007 21:36

Had dd by c.s. on Wednesday & then transfered to the
nearby birthing unit, because breastfeeding wasn't going well & unit was preferable to the hospital.

Looking back it was a God send that I had the birthing unit to go to. It enabled me to get over those sometimes awkward first days of b.feeding & gave me hours upon end to just lay in bed with my new baby, feed her & relax. Had I been at home I doubt very much I would have done any of those things.

Ds1 emergency cs due to distress, would have been allowed to go home after 3 days, but chose to stay an extra day as nervous first time mum!
Ds2 planned cs due to IUGR, stayed 3 days and was very keen to leave. Got the impression it would have taken considerable medical needs to stay any longer as they were really busy and needed my bed!
Both healthy babies, bf established and no post-op probs for me.

Banoffee · 25/03/2007 23:03

Had a 38 hour labour, gave birth at 5.45pm left the next day at 1pm. Out of choice.

Genidef · 25/03/2007 23:43

Had the baby Saturday am early, was up walking around within about two hours - told to get own breakfast, etc on the first day. Very difficult to sleep etc, not much help, so might as well be home, I figures. Out by Tuesday pm. An SHO tried to sign me out earlier but they wouldn't let her, so I had to wait until 9 pm that day. We were knackered and ready to go!

Olissa · 26/03/2007 00:04

I had my DS by emergency CS early Tuesday morning and went home Friday lunchtime - I was pleased to be home but had a few probs with the stairs, my very low futon-style bed and the fact I had no shower at home, just a bath. Was OK if I took things slowly.

I did my last two fragmin injections at home myself - the MW showed me how on day 3 and the community MW took the used needles away with her when she came to visit. I was quite surprised when they asked me if I was prepared to do them myself, but I managed fine.

(This is my first post BTW - hello everyone!)

littleEasterlapin · 26/03/2007 00:08

Had DS 7pm Saturday, left 11am Monday. Hospital offered me the bed for a day or two more, but I felt fine, and it was hard to sleep with 2 other mums and yelling babies in the ward!

I felt fine, in fact got told off by midwife when she caught me walking 1/2 mile to Waitrose with DS in sling 2 weeks later

littleEasterlapin · 26/03/2007 00:09

Hello Olissa!

fifisworld · 26/03/2007 10:00

I had ds by e/c at 1.30 am saturday morning and came home at 6pm sunday night.
When i found out i was pg i was terrified about staying in hosptial and wanted to come out asap.
Ds was fine, i was up and about, had been showered and was weeing ok so after much begging i came home.

kslatts · 26/03/2007 10:15

DD1 was born Thursday and I went home the following Monday. DD2 was born on Monday and I went home on the Thursday.

I was ready to go home both times and couldn't wait.

TuttiFrutti · 26/03/2007 14:01

Dd was born on Friday evening and I was told by a doctor that I could go home on Sunday morning. I think this would have been much too soon, and I actually stayed till Tuesday morning, although I would have gone on the Monday if I'd had childcare arranged for my ds then.

The care I needed after a very quick and straightforward cs was mainly rest and being looked after. It was easier to get this in hospital than at home!

I think emergency c-sections are much more difficult to recover from than electives, and having had both I would say it took me a good 5 days to feel "normal" (as in fit to go home) after an emergency, but only 2 days with the elective.

Diplidophus · 26/03/2007 14:05

I went after three days. I was private so it was my choice and I regretted it. If I end up with a C/Sec this time round then I will stay for five if possible.

Reason was that I was still in a lot of pain, particularly when the wind hit. I wasn't very mobile and found it difficult to cope at home.

However I had a private room in hospital - I may have felt diferentyl if I had been on a ward!

evenhope · 26/03/2007 14:14

I had DD on the Tuesday morning and went home Thursday morning. Injections stopped when I left and with hindsight I could have done with a few more days to sort out the bf but for the last night and day I was entirely alone in my ward and had problems leaving her to go to the loo.

mrsmarsbar · 26/03/2007 14:16

Had DS 11 am on Friday am by elective CS, home by 4pm Sunday. Couldn't wait to get home and back into my own bed rather than in busy ward. No injections but had tasteful stockings for a few days at home(until community MW said they could go). Took things easy at home with mum and DH to help, but was out shopping by the wednesday...might have stayed longer if I'd had my own room though.

madmarchhare · 26/03/2007 14:20

Had DS thursday evening and was told I could go home sunday.

DS was in SCBU, so they let me stay in until monday.

DS was in scbu for another 4 days.

madmarchhare · 26/03/2007 14:21

Sorry, forgot to say that I thought that was about right as far as I was phyically concerned but a bit of a pain with ds still been in..
