How long did you stay in hospital post C/S? Was it too short?

The reason I ask is that a lot of you seem to go home at 2-3 days. Are you fit enough?
We advise women to stay 5 days but I am sure that will change soon more due to shortage of beds. Midwives worry about women going home too soon. What is your experience?

I never had any injections either

whoopsfallenoveragain · 25/03/2007 13:12

I had the injections after my second section with dd but no stockings (I don't think!) and had just stockings with ds. the injections did carry on while I was at home up until day 5

chocolateshoes · 25/03/2007 13:15

I had DS on Wed afternoon & left on the Sun morning. It was just right tbh. And yes I had the injections in hospital for 3 days I think. Like with some others it was my first baby so I left hospital when I felt it was right - didn't feel hurried by hospital staff at all.

HonorMatopoeia · 25/03/2007 13:15

I had Dd by emergency c section and was in for five days (there were a few complications and I had to be on strong painkillers for a while, I still don't remember much about this time if I'm honest )I felt like I could have done with 'being taken care of ' for a while longer but then the poor midwives were so overworked that I'm afraid I didn't feel as if I got much support. In the end it was easier for me to come home and have my Dh to help me out. The midwives that visited at home were superb btw!

MintChocChippyMinton · 25/03/2007 13:19

Mine was in 2001.

twocatsonthebed · 25/03/2007 13:21

I was in for four nights - the big teaching hospital would have happily turned me out after 1.5 nights (dd was born at 11pm, so wasn't back on the ward until 4am). But round here you can opt to go back to the community hospitals for as long as you like, in order to recover and establish bf. To be honest, I was more worried about that than about being in pain.

We did have stockings, and the final injection was done by the community midwives, who came round pretty much every day for the first week to check up on pain relief, healing etc etc.

chocolateshoes · 25/03/2007 13:24

Oh yes, I should have added that I could have then gone to the midwife run hospital nearby for another week if I had wanted - but as I had my parents staying and DP was off work I didn't need to.

chirpygirl · 25/03/2007 13:56

Had a CS wednesday morning, was up and walking/showering on Thursday went up and down some stairs on Friday to prove I could and went home Saturday.

I couldn't have beared to stay any longer, I hate hospitals and the other mums on my ward were horrible to me so I wanted to go home.
Had no problems afterwards

chirpygirl · 25/03/2007 13:59

You should have TED stockings on post delivery and have fragmin injections (or similar) for 5 days to prevent DVT. Our unit stops the fragmin when you go home. I know of another unit where the community midwife gives it until the fifth day.

Just spotted this, DD was born last feb and I had no injections or stockings at all.....but I was told to get up off my arse after 24 hours instead.

gibberish · 25/03/2007 14:03

I was out in 2 days. I felt fine but because I was at home I was up and about doing things much too early which didn't help recovery. It would have been better if I had stayed in hospital for longer and been made to rest.

womba1 · 25/03/2007 14:03

I had ds in 2003 by emergency c/s at 5.30am on a Thursday and left hospital Sunday morning. I only had the blood clotting jabs while in hospital.

And as for dd, she was born by elective c/s in January of last year at 10am on a Wednesday and i was out of hospital Saturday morning, and again only had the jabs while in hospital.

I was ready to leave on both occasions although if i'd been given the option to stay, i wowuld have said yes!

fishie · 25/03/2007 14:05

i was in for 3 days after cs- a week in total and i was desperate to get out to get some decent bf support and get away from evil midwife - which i am sure would not happen at your place mears

i was dressed and out of bed after 24h though and never had/needed any stronger pain relief than a couple of paracetamol.

fishie · 25/03/2007 14:10

no injections at all so far as i know, but about a million antibiotics.

RedFraggle · 25/03/2007 14:18

I had dd by emergency c-section just after midnight on the wednesday morning and was home on the Friday. I had been badgering to go home from about the Thursday morning as it was sooo noisy and I had no sleep, felt like I was a pest as I had to ring for help every time dd needed to be bf or nappy changed. Oh and I had a private room, but you could still hear the claxon like alarm going off from all the other rooms and ward every five minutes as other new mums pressed their buzzers for assistance! So for me being in a private room did not make one iota of difference to the noise and heat issue....

I knew I'd have more assistance at home. Midwives on the ward were lovely but just so obviously understaffed!
In the end I practically discharged myself as I knew if I didn't get out on the Friday I would be stuck there ALL weekend and I was already in constant tears from lack of sleep! The staff wanted me to stay until Monday but I pretty much refused.
I recovered very quickly though, was up and in the shower on Wednesday afternoon, totally off the morphine on Thursday morning. I asked them what I had to do to get out of the hospital and they said that I had to be off the morphine, see my baby bathed and try out two other bf positions. So I said "right! No more morphine and get a bath in here asap please!" - think they knew I was determined to be gone!!!

I had dd in 2005 and only remember anti-d and morphine injections did have the attractive stockings though!

Monkeybar · 25/03/2007 14:20

I had ds my emergency c/s early Wednesday morning in 2005, didn't get out until the following Monday, partly because ds was v poorly at birth (apgar of 2, then only 4 at 5mins) and was in scbu, and partly because they said that there was no one free to do the checks on ds necessary for discharge until the Monday. I didn't have stockings or heparin injections, iirc, although I do remember being injected into my tummy once or twice. I was wheeled down to scbu to see ds the afternoon after he was born and was up and about on the Thursday morning to have a shower etc. Just took it all very slowly. I hated it in hosp, the midwives were generally unsupportive and there seemed to be some rivalry between the postnatal ward and scbu. I was desperate to go home, although once I was out, dh was straight back to work and I had no help at all at home.

Lullabyloo · 25/03/2007 14:26

I had an emergency c.s at 5.12pm on the Saturday....hospital was horrendous, care appalling & so transfered to the birthing centre nearby late on the Tuesday afternoon.
Had a blissful few days there & went home Thurs afternoon.

macneil · 25/03/2007 14:29

3 nights. Genuinely horrible, scary staff, who mostly left me alone, didn't help with my first bathing/teeth cleaning or anything like that. They encouraged family to stay overnight (a carer) to do all that, so my mum stayed on the floor on plastic cushions. I paid extra for a private room and it was all, esp. the bathroom, filthy, bloody sheets never changed. This was in Canada. Couldn't wait to get home, but baby wouldn't eat and they wouldn't let me bottle feed, as I'd said I wanted to breast feed, they kept standing over making me use syringe. Eventually, I did give her a bottle because I was terrified she'd die, she stopped losing weight (birth weight just over 5 pounds), they let us go. I felt so desperate.

Dottydot · 25/03/2007 14:31

I went home on day 2, as did dp. We both felt that the post natal care in the hospital (and we were in different ones) was dreadful, and we would look after each other much better at home.

Dp was expected to get up and change ds1's nappy on the night he was born - she had her c/s at 12pm and had to be up and around doing his nappy by 7pm.

I had my section at midnight and still couldn't feel my legs by the next morning, but got tutted at when I buzzed for someone to change ds2!

Neither of us had injections - this was 5 years ago for ds1 and 3 years ago for ds2. I had stockings on my legs and a fab bed for the first night that squeezed, which was very pleasant!

Both of us were up and around and desperate to go home by the morning of day 2, so we were allowed. I think knowing that we had good support at home (i.e. each other!) was key.

uptomyeyes · 25/03/2007 14:31

Csection 1 + in for 5 days though walking around and generally fine the day after the op.

Csection 2 in for 6 days because DS2 was in SCBU and needed to finish a course of treatment.

Csection 3 was out after 3 days - with a wound drain and a catheter bag. I wanted to leave but to be honest I was in no fit state. I had to have bladder surgery immediately after DS3 was born. It took months to recover.

Any midwives out there...can you answer this question. Do ladies really no longer have a morphine suppositry after a c-section because of the war on terror in Afghanistan - or was I merely dreaming that the anaesethist (sp) said that to me during my third section???

Ceebee74 · 25/03/2007 14:36

I had DS Friday teatime and was allowed to go home Monday lunchtime - which was ok by me. I had no desire to stay in hospital any longer and had had enough by then (bored, fed up and hungry cos the food was awful!!) - just wanted to be at home, in comfort, with my new family.

Can't beat your own home to recuperate in I'm afraid.

However, the MW that came to see me on the Tuesday was not impressed that I was at home and said if she had her way, it would have been 2 weeks

BlueberryPancake · 25/03/2007 14:40

At my hospital (Newham General, London) They ask you early on if you have support at home. If you do, then they send you home when you and they think you're ready (3 days and 3 nights for me). But if you don't have support at home you can stay up to five days. I think that's good

EHM · 25/03/2007 14:45

had dd mid morning wed, allowed home am Friday. was too early as only me & dh on home. But I would rather have rested at home with dd & dh then saty another night on the ward. Good luck

Meggymoose · 25/03/2007 14:45

DD 1 - had CS Weds 8pm (emergency), discharged Sun pm

DD2 - had CS Fri 2pm (elective), discharged Sun 2pm

Both just about right.

EHM · 25/03/2007 14:47

I wasn't asked if I wanted to stay in 5 days. I was asked If I would like to go home in the morning, as I looked like I was getting on fine.

sophiewd · 25/03/2007 16:30

Had the stockings
