What does waters breaking feel like?

Might seem stupid but I'm 38+ with ds1 and I'm terrified I'm going to not know my waters break. I know some people say it feels like you've wet yourself etc but I don't want to rely on my trousers getting wet or a wet patch on my seat. So what did it feel like for you? Like you'd missed the loo or is it completely different? Tia

Honestly, mine only broke once before labour started. Its nothing like the movies where waters break and then contractions.

With my first the waters broke and I woke in a puddle. I knew it was my waters as I started getting contractions too.

With the youngest 2. They broke as I was pushing.
Labour was contractions.

finnthepink · 01/06/2017 21:17

I didn't really know.

FWIW most women have contractions first (it doesn't usually kick off with a gush like in the movies) so you're unlikely to be taken unawares.

Natsku · 01/06/2017 21:17

The doctor broke mine during labour, felt like a sudden flood coming out of me.

OhHolyFuck · 01/06/2017 21:18

Both of mine were as baby was crowning so lots of pressure, felt like a balloon being popped down there - audible 'pop', lots of gushing water and a relief that a little of the pressure had eased and babies flew out like on a water slide!

Fitzsimmons · 01/06/2017 21:19

I woke up feeling like I really really needed to pee. Made it to the toilet and started peeing. Several minutes later I realised that I wasn't peeing. Blush

My contractions started about ten minutes later and were every three minutes. Sometimes it is like they show it in the movies Grin

Bubblysqueak · 01/06/2017 21:19

First time was like the exorcist after 48hrs of labour including all the vomit! the second time was like I was wetting myself throughout the night .

RapunzelsRealMom · 01/06/2017 21:20

Mine broke very slowly. It wasn't a sudden gush at all. I actually thought I must've been weeing without feeling the need to 'go'. I felt no sensation - just a slow trickle.

inisfree · 01/06/2017 21:20

Exactly the same as oholyfuck. A pop and gush of water both times for me.

Gluetap · 01/06/2017 21:20

Both my labours started with my waters breaking. I felt a "pop" and then a rush of fluid.

ShowOfHands · 01/06/2017 21:21

Mine broke out of the blue both times. Just like a film.

Felt and heard a pop and had a massive gush of fluid. I then leaked every time I moved or stood up for 12hrs.

Xmasbaby11 · 01/06/2017 21:22

Like a pop with a splash of water, then flooding. It was insane, just poured out of me. Used lots of towels and still had to sit on pile of towels going to hospital an hour later. So glad it happened at home! Contractions started soon after.

Heatherbell1978 · 01/06/2017 21:22

With DS the mw broke them and it felt like my insides flooded out like a pressure jet. With DD they broke in the pool about 5 mins before she arrived and I felt the same pressure; I think when you're so close to giving birth a lot of pressure has built up and it's maybe worse.

blue2014 · 01/06/2017 21:22

I was induced and the midwife accidentally broke mine. It was generally like a waterfall - it gushed and gushed. I thought I might drown someone WinkShock

Apparently it can be really subtle though

Cestquiluideja · 01/06/2017 21:23

My favourite part. For me it happened at the start and was slow release. Didn't feel like I'd wet myself. Happened in bed and was just very calm and exciting at the same time. Unfortunately the rest of labour/birth didn't ensue naturally but my waters breaking is a very happy memory for me. That "it's happening!" feeling without any pain/discomfort

Rockspin · 01/06/2017 21:24

I heard an audible pop which i really felt too, and then a gentle/slow leak of fluid, no mega gush, with dd1.

Waters had to be broken with dd2 as labour happened too fast so midwife to decisive action and popped them as I pushed!

BikeRunSki · 01/06/2017 21:24

First time, 37+5, a pop and a slight sort of suction feeling and then a gush of water.

Second time, 39 weeks, drip-followed by contraction. Then the same thing a minute later, and a minute later....

kshaw · 01/06/2017 21:25

I didn't know mine had gone! I lost my plug at 34 weeks. was told could be start/not. I was leaking a bit of fluid, had a scan 34+2 and all ok. Woke up 34+4 with more 'leaking' - I'd gone through a pad during the night and my bum was wet but I'd not gone through to my pjs. I got dressed and went on 2 buses to triage (!) turns out my waters had gone and baby arrived 34+6. I thought I was wasting triage time again (after having my show) so took my time etc. Baby all well though and now nearly 10 weeks old!

OllyBJolly · 01/06/2017 21:25

Loud pop, followed by big gush, and the water just kept coming. No way could it be mistaken for an accident.

Waters broke at midnight, first contraction 7.25am. Baby 20 mins later.

CerealShopper · 01/06/2017 21:26

I woke at 6:30am thinking I'd wet the bed. Contractions started soon after. It wasn't actually until the dust had settled a few weeks later that I realised that was my waters breaking!

titsbumfannythelot · 01/06/2017 21:26

First time didn't know they had.

Second time burst by midwife, thankfully I was in hospital.

Congratulations Flowers

Vinorosso74 · 01/06/2017 21:27

I didn't really feel mine go. I just moved slightly on the sofa and then realised all was wet.
We were awaiting a new sofa luckily!

Soubriquet · 01/06/2017 21:27

First time MW broke them. Felt like I had wet myself and it was warm and gushy.

2nd time, popped during labour. They thought I was going to have a caul birth as the bag was really bulging...but it went with a very audible pop which felt like a sharp but painless snap just as the MW and DH had their heads down there.. Grin they got soaked

raspberryblush23 · 01/06/2017 21:27

Sharp but bearable cramp, a pop, followed by a gush both times. Everyone's different though.

sallywiththegoodhurr · 01/06/2017 21:27

2 out of 3 times it was like a balloon popping down below, an audible pop that made me jump in the air. I was already in labour both times.

The other time baby was crowning when they went and I had no idea until the midwife told me
