Choice of Maternity Hospital - South Manchester

Hi Lovely people,

I have been given a choice of maternity hospital by my GP. How did you go about find out which is better? Tried google but seems to be for hospital overall rather than maternity specifically.

If there is anyone else from South Manchester I would really appreciate recommendations.

What is the choice?

I had my daughter at st. Mary's Midwife led unit and had a good experience though the food was horrible. It was my nearest hospital and I also work there so convenient for appointments.
Others on my NCT course had babies at wythenshawe and said it was good. Have heard good things about Stepping Hill too.
You can also change hospitals during your pregnancy so your choice isn't set in stone.

Choices are St Mary's or Wythenshaw.

Both are good maternity wise. It's worth checking which midwives you'll see during your antenatal appts though, i found out halfway through my first pregnancy i was seeing wythenshawe midwives but was booked into St Mary's so moved midwives.
Is Salford birthing center an option for you?

Salford birthing centre is being closed at Salford Royal and is moving to new premises.
Can also only give birth their if you are low risk as it is a midwife led unit and there are no doctors so if you had complications you would be need to transferred to another hospital.

My choices were St Mary's or wythenshawe, too. Went with St Mary's and found them excellent, a bit short-staffed for postnatal though. Had a priority section and discharged the following day. My friends that went to wythenshawe thought it was excellent too; birthing pool in every room apparently! We couldn't choose so just went for location.

Steppi hill was amazing. DD was in neonatal and everyone was fantastic.

Thanks everyone for the recommendations. Seems their is little to split them. Tough choice. That said there are tougher choices I could be making. This is a nice decision to have.

If you really do want a pool, wythenshawe will be better as they have a pool in every room, as st Mary's only has 2 on mlu and one on the main labour ward.

Started at Salford Royal, was transferred to St Marys after I didn't progress and thought I'd quite like an epidural. St. Mary's were excellent. Ended up with a EMCS, wasn't in the least bit how I thought it would be, very calm, not scary etc.

Postnatal care was excellent, felt really looked after, midwives were lovely. Would choose to go there for ELCS again if we had another.

A friend didn't have a good experience at St Mary's, didn't feel the midwives were looking after her completely and weren't listening to her when she told them the baby was coming.
I personally really rate Wythenshawe from my own experience. First birth was in delivery suite and as soon as there was a problem they pushed a button and the room was full!
Second time round I was in the birthing suite and a lovely experience

Had my first at St Mary's. Couldn't fault them during labour and birth but post natal care was rubbish. Ward obviously short staffed, no help with breastfeeding - in fact I was told to stop doing skin to skin as I was making him cold?! My baby became jaundiced but they still discharged us, ended back in 3 days later for light therapy.
