Does your experience of labour follow your mother's?

I've heard this lately - that if your mother was overdue/had a long labour etc. then you are likely to share the same experience? Similarly, if her's was quick and easy yours is likely to be too! This is my first baby so I can't comment but I wondered what others' experiences were and whether they agreed?

I've heard that too, but IME my mother's labour with me was far easier/shorter than mine with DS.

NO. Both my mother's labours where on her due date (mine were 2 weeks late and 3 days early), and both were quick (I was almost born in the car on the way to the hospital) whereas mine were 72 hours and 28 hours.

Chocalholic1 · 05/02/2007 10:57

Now that is what I want to hear! My mum is a lot bigger than me (take after my dad's side) - always had to be induced at 10 days and all babies were around 10lb. Not an attractive prospect!!

But maybe you are just the exception that proves the rule!

Nope!

My dad was extremely concerned when I chose a homebirth as he had witnessed two very difficult labours with my mum, forceps, etc.

I had a relatively short labour at home with only a little gas and air at the end.

Lizzylou · 05/02/2007 11:01

Not at all similar, My Mom had horrendous pregnancies with myself and my brother, constantly sick for 7mths with each, ending up hospitalised and on a drip and then very easy and quick labours a few days before her due date(must have been quite a relief!).
I had fairly OK pregnancies and then 2 long and complicated labours (both ventouse), due to size of DS's in the main, DS1 was over due by 6 days and DS2 2 days early. I suppose I was exactly the opposite of My Mother's experience.

Chocalholic1 · 05/02/2007 11:02

Thanks guys - feeling a lot less despondent now - had pretty much resigned myself to being induced. I am 39+5 weeks so there is hope for me yet!!!

With Ds2 I followed the "sex, pineapple and curry" path and it worked. Give it a go, good luck and don't worry.

Chocalholic1 · 05/02/2007 11:08

Does it have to be in that order?

No, I was three weeks early and a long, very traumatic forceps delivery. Poor mum had loads of stitches - I was big for the time too - 8lbs something. My sisters were also a week or two early but the births were easier.

My first three were all late, huge but the births were absolutely fine (esp DS2 who came out so quick the mw hadn't got her gloves on properly)

itsmeNDP · 05/02/2007 11:12

No it didn't

Mum - I was 6/7 weeks early, 12 hour 'dry' labour as her waters went completely 3 days before she went into labour proper, lots of pain relief, NHS hospital.

Me - DD was born pretty much at term (37.5 weeks), 3 hour intense but pain relief free labour, very much a non-medicalised labour, the staff were very hands off, NHS hospital.

Lizzylou · 05/02/2007 11:12

Yep! Curry gave me such heartburn that I wouldn't have been able to "do the deed"!!!

expatinscotland · 05/02/2007 11:15

No. My elder sister was footling breech so my mother had a planned csection. She had a repeat c w/me and a tummy tuck whilst on the table.

Never went into labour once.

scorpio1 · 05/02/2007 11:17

yes, my labours have so far.

no pain relief, quite quick, 8lb ers...

although one difference is my brave mum gave birth to a breech baby naturally-they were too late getting her into theatre-my middle sister came out on a trolley in the corridor!

i feel lucky that mine have followed hers

BabyMadwithBump · 05/02/2007 11:26

My mother has had 10 chilren (yes I'm one of ten ) Most of my mother's babies have been bron at 40/41+ week (only one early me) and most of her labours have been 8-36 hours long and painful bar one (3rd child born within an hour 5 mins after truning up at the hospital) My mother's last baby was a 36 hour labour!
Now me both my DC were bron at 39 weeks and DS#1 labour was 3hours 45mins and DS#2 was 3hours 15mins!
But I believe height is a big factor I'm 5 foot 2 and my mother is 5 foot 7, so I carry alot lower than my mother ever did.

I really hope not, she had 2 planned c/sections and an emergency C/S - i'm planning a homebirth in oh, about 5 weeks... She was only 4ft10.5 though and Im a strapping 5ft1 lol

BabyMadwithBump · 05/02/2007 11:29

My mothers: 5lb 9oz/7lb 9oz
Me: 8lb 4oz/8lb 14oz

lemonaid · 05/02/2007 11:34

All my mother's labours were 2-3 weeks overdue, but DS was 2 days early.

Both our first labours started with waters going in the morning before anything else happened, followed by fairly long labours. But I was a svelte 7-pounder and was born vaginally while DS was nearly 10 and a half pounds, posterior, with both hands up to his head, and I wound up with an unplanned c/s.

uwila · 05/02/2007 12:15

I went into my first labour/delivery thinking.. oh mother and both sisters had problem free totally normal deliveries so I will two... Un huh... that though was followine by two weeks over due, failed induction, and an emergency section.

Between the three of us there have been seven normal vaginal deliveries and two section. The 2 sections were both mine. (although the second one was elective and I could have tried for VBAC if I had wanted to)

BrummieOnTheRun · 05/02/2007 12:27

No. My mother had long labours and smaller babies. But her children much more were widely spaced, so that may have had an influence.

Some people believe tall women have a shorter 2nd stage???? If that were true then maybe genetics could be having some influence...but suspect it's complete crap!

lulumama · 05/02/2007 12:32

well, each birth for each woman is different...depends on so so much !

i would say, that on the whole, the one thing that sometimes seems to follow, is whether your babies come early, late or on time, but of course there are exceptions

my mum had me & my twin sister, 6 weeks prem, i was a footling breech, my sister was face up, and we were born vaginally ! and my brother was born vaginally, but mum had quite a hard time of it

i had two singletons, first was a failed induction resulting in a c.s, the second was a spontaneous labour ending in VBAC

so nothing like my mum at all

my twin sister had her first baby last year, 2 weeks early, good relatively quick vaginal delivery with no complications ! !

BabyMadwithBump · 05/02/2007 12:43

Out of Me (5 foot 2) and my mother (5 foot 7) I had bigger babies, less painful labour and shorter 1st and 2nd stage! (have I just set myself up for a big fall with this LO? )

And my mother had MS for about week or 2 thats it, but me really bad MS and for 13-16 weeks, with DS#2 I ended up in hospital with the MS TOO!

munz · 05/02/2007 12:45

J was v v simialr to DB althou he was 1/2 lb lighter, born roughly the same time, both had eps/stiches and tearing etc, both BF, althou mum stopped at 3 months with DB as her milk dried up apparently??

both were realtivly long well short for first timers 10-12 hours. active but most part similar, both suffer from a bad back after.

twelveyeargap · 05/02/2007 12:47

Yes, but I'm pretty sure it's a coincidence due to circumstance. We both had long labours (me 16, her 22 hours), with all the pain in the back. Both OP babies, but am pretty sure it's because neither of us knew what OP was, or how to prevent it and didn't have medical staff who volunteer the info until after the birth.
