Does your experience of labour follow your mother's?

I've heard this lately - that if your mother was overdue/had a long labour etc. then you are likely to share the same experience? Similarly, if her's was quick and easy yours is likely to be too! This is my first baby so I can't comment but I wondered what others' experiences were and whether they agreed?

According to my mum she had two very easy labours and in my brother's case quick & easy. I had two very long, painful labours.

Hulababy · 05/02/2007 12:51

No, not similar at all. My mum had 3 children, all pretty easily without intervention. First child early, others around right time IIRR.

My labour was very different. Has 2 weeks overdue, had induction lasting 50 hours, which failed to get me beyond 2/3cm dialated. Ended in c section.

juuule · 05/02/2007 12:56

No. My mother had high-blood pressure with her first (possible pre-eclampsia) and emergency c-section. Next 2 were elective cs.
My pregnancies and deliveries were all overdue, (2 out of 9 were induced)but were all straightforward.

soph28 · 05/02/2007 13:00

Don't know cos my mum was induced on or before due date for all 3 of us due to a previous stillbirth.

Me- ds 9 days late, 7 hour labour, synctocin drip, tear and stitches. 8lb 6oz born with hands up by his ears.

dd 12 days late, induced, born 45minutes after them breaking my waters, tear and stitches. 8lbs and also born with hands up by her ears!

My sister had a very similar labour to both of mine- i.e. fairly quick, tear and stitches, almost 8lbs, but hers was 4 days early.

Guess you can't really tell!

soph28 · 05/02/2007 13:01

juuule - you have had 9 children! Wow.

PinkTulips · 05/02/2007 13:02

mom.... shortish labour ending in forceps as she wouldn't push.. 2 days after due date

me... 2 very long labour but very quick from 5-10 cms and short pushing stages. 2 weeks and 4 days early

Nemo2007 · 05/02/2007 13:07

nope my mum was early with me[born34wks] labour was horrendous resulting in c sec and I was 4lb6ozs. Both my sister were born by elective c sec.

My labours Ds induced at 42wks went into labour next day and took 90mins start to finish to deliver 9lb1oz ds.
Induced with both DDs and both were 6lbs 14.

ChaCha · 05/02/2007 16:55

Yes, so far the same!

My mum had 2 c-sections. I had an emergency section 14 months ago and have an elective booked next week - exactly the same.

NotAnOtter · 05/02/2007 16:56

who knows

Ally24 · 05/02/2007 17:06

i took after my grandmothers pregnancy we both had pre-eclampsia and she was born on the 20th of october her second daughter was born on the 20th of october and my son was born on the 20th of october, as i had to be induced because of the pre-eclampsia.

pianist · 05/02/2007 17:16

I agree - in my case the labours were similar, although we managed them differently!

brimfull · 05/02/2007 17:21

Good Lord no!
My mother had 4 children ,no pain ,no fuss and wonders what all the fuss is about ,grrrrrrrrrr!

Me I had to be induced and had an epidural...oh the shame, and then I had a c-section.What a complete cop out!

cece · 05/02/2007 17:26

No,

Both of mine went to 42 weeks.

Mum had me 3 days late - think I was about 12 hour labour. My first labour was 2days.

Her second, my sister, was born at 32 weeks due to eclampsia.

Mercy · 05/02/2007 17:26

My mum's and my experience of labour are pretty similar in that they were fairly quick.

My mum didn't have much pain whereas I felt mine were quite intense.

No noticeably early or overdue births either.

frenchleave · 06/02/2007 08:19

Yes, my pregnancies were similar to mum's in that neither of us had any sickness, but my mum had one overdue and I had none (though I had one early induction). My three births were really quick - faster and more straightforward than mum's

eidsvold · 06/02/2007 08:42

nope - my mum had three easy labours and even had db1 vaginally despite him being breech...

me - at this stage - never been in labour with dd1 and dd2 - 2 c-sections.. one 10 days early, one 10 days late. Booked for 3rd section late Mar!!

My two dbs were around their due date whereas I was early.

Mum had babies of average size. My dd1 was 6 1/2 lbs, dd2 was 9lb 7oz.

BikeBug · 06/02/2007 08:46

I wish. Mum popped us out like the proverbial shelled peas - 5 hr labour with me (5-6 weeks early),

eviletc · 06/02/2007 08:49

my mum's first baby (me) one week late, relatively quick, minimal pain relief, very timy bit of tearing.

my first (and only so far) - one week late, relatively quick (10 hours), minimal pain relief (pethidine...ok ..sort of minimal!), very tiny bit of tearing!

my mum's blood pressure went sky high though, whereas mine actually gave me problems during pregnancy for being too low!

leahsmum · 06/02/2007 09:01

My mum spent 6 months of her first preg (my brother) in hospital due to low lying placenta which resulted in lots of blood loss during her entire pregnancy. Was due for a CS and on the morning of her CS went into labour naturally and had him vaginally after 4hours of labour - stitched back to front.
With me she arrived at the hospital at approx 6.30am after a couple of hours of 'discomfort' and delivered me at 8am. Both small - bro 5lb 15oz and me 5lb 2oz - Both 3 weeks early.

I was induced with dd at 39+4 due to high bp (other signs of pre eclampsie ie protein, visual disturbances and headaches) given prostin at 7am, waters broken for me at 1pm and delivered at 5pm. DD weighed 6lb. 2 stitches. Hoping for another 'quickie' in the next few days! Probably just jinxed myself now for a long labour.

Seansgirl · 06/02/2007 09:03

No not all, she had three reasonably straight forward pregnancies and births. Births with only gas & air. Me - 1st 2 weeks early, DB1- roughly on time, DB2 - 2 weeks late and on the same birthday as me 8 years in between!

Me DD - 40 + 2, waters broke early, induced, pethidine and longish labour.

Wish had my mums births, but mainly when my due date comes in June am wishing to avoid c section mostly. Not that DD was one - but really want to avoid!!

bottleblonde · 06/02/2007 09:39

Can only compare with my Mum's DS1 as I've only one DS so far. Similarities - very sick during pregnancy from day 1, 24 hour labour, her baby was lighter by about 2 pound but she is 5 2 and I'm 5 7. Her next labour (with me) was 45 minutes, so heres hoping

OzJo · 06/02/2007 09:56

My mum had really short labours, ( 2hrs!)and popped out me and my brother. I had 2 LONG labours, a cervix that wouldn't dilate past 4cms, ersulting in 2 C sections. So nothing like it, bloody shame, but the kids were OK, and so was I ( eventually)..

Not at all - my poor mum had 2 caesareans (1 planned, 1 emergency) and 1 forceps delivery. I had a straightforward, relaxed and non-medicalised home birth. Don't forget that the treatment of labouring women has changed over the generations - my mum was strapped to a bed and monitor for the duration of her labours whereas I was able to freely move around. This, as well as genetics perhaps, makes a huge difference.
