Did anyone else enjoy giving birth?

i did with DS1- tho had a bad tear, but i was looking forward to giving birth all through my 2nd pregnancy and really enjoyed it (homebirth in pool)

both times i had no drugs at all,

i know its only because i had quick (both 5.5 hours from start to finish) and complication free births,

my mum loved giving birth and so did my MIL - so i know im not the only one

think about it every day and smile as i remember pushing her out and this damp, bloody, baby was laid on me, with her arms outstretched, and wathed her take her first breath, and cry and i touched her first...and counted the eyelashes on her right eyelid as she lay in the crib later

best darn day of my life, without a shadow of a doubt!

Strangely I did - the actual birth was a C-section after 24 hours of labour and failure to progress, and I was so excited that the waiting was over. Once I was sure the anesthetic was working and it wasn't going to hurt, it was great. Lovely midwife at the head end talked me through every step and DP was holding my hand and watching. When they lifted him out DP was just staring in amazement and then the surgeon said "a healthy boy!" and just waved him at me briefly before they hurried him off - it was mindblowing. Then I drifted off for a while and the next thing I new DP was back in the room in hus scrubs holding DS wrapped in a blanket and looking as if he'd been doing it all his life and he said "our son... our son!" and held him out to me. It was lovely.

It was horrible afterwards mind - bloody painful and I was exhausted and ill - but yes I would use the word "enjoy" for the birth and I was happy that a CS could be like that.

merlotmama · 03/01/2007 23:48

Loved both mine. Both quick -1st in 5hrs 20 mins, 2nd in 2 1/2 hours and no pain relief needed, tho' I did roar! And very satisfying it was, too!

I know what you mean, Kittylette, childbirth is the most primal/ visceral/ earthy/ female experience you can have - a stupendous experience.

And I'm not just saying this years after the events, I thought so at the time, too, both times.

expatinscotland · 03/01/2007 23:50

No.

I thought I was going to die both times from pain.

I had DD2 w/no drugs b/c it was too late.

It felt like someone was disembowling me.

I'm glad they're here, but I certainly didn't enjoy those awful contractions and the pushing.

hunkermunker · 03/01/2007 23:53

Yes, both times. I'd do it again tomorrow.

NorksBride · 03/01/2007 23:54

Yes, I loved it too. Nice to see some likeminded mums - most people think I'm mad or lying!

Certainly it gets more enjoyable the more births I have. 1st was 7hrs at birthing centre, 2nd was 3hrs birthing centre, 3rd was 1hr at home (bliss). No drugs with any. (Recovery after the 1st was awful though).

Hate being pregnant though!

The first stage was absolutely terrible, awful, never want to do it again. The pushing stage was different and kind of exhilerating even though I had a back labour with only g&a and was pushing for 3.5 hours! It was touch and go there for a while, my contractions almost stopped and they were talking about interventions, but then all of a sudden I found the strength from somewhere and the midwife said "look, you've pushed the head out". I looked down and there he was - OMG, I will NEVER forget how that felt - the most wonderful feeling in the world!

expatinscotland · 03/01/2007 23:55

I wanted someone else to do it for me .

AitchTwoOhOhSeven · 03/01/2007 23:57

contractions were SORE, but yes, it was a really exciting day and SUCH fun.
and my god, when you see your child for the first time, and when you see your partner seeing his child for the first time, and when you realise that you're a family for the first time...

I was on my knees for DD2, and hugging the back of the bed w/my arms. TBH, I was really concerned about tearing along my episiotomy scar from DD1's forceps deliveries AND there is NO way I could have changed positions.

That's how my body wanted to be and it was the only position I could stand to be in w/o descending into utter panic from the pain.

So I didn't see DD2 come out. Or want to. I could feel it all.

I just wanted it all to be OVER.

DH saw them both being born.

Said it was 'amazing'.

Feeling like someone's ripping your bowels open w/a butter knife.

Amazing.

ly.

Painful.

MrsJohnCusack · 04/01/2007 00:03

No I didn't, it was horrible, I was scared and felt out of control, couldn't do any of things I planned on doing, it was a pretty fast induction, large baby, shoulder dystocia, resusciated baby, bla bla bla.
lulumama is giving me hope for my second birth in a few weeks, I am determined it will not be the same. Not feeling too hopeful at the moment, but trying to remain positive as that might be some of the battle...

expatinscotland · 04/01/2007 00:06

I went fast w/DD2.

I mean, was 9cm upon examination at hospital and she was born 26 mins. after arrival.

It was all about 3 hours start to finish.

BIG difference between that and the 24 hour back labour, forceps and DD1 w/her hand tucked up by her ear.

So here's hoping for you, MrsJ!

MrsJohnCusack · 04/01/2007 00:11

thanks Expat! - my first task is just to avoid induction if at all possible I reckon.
