Private Obstetricians - Guy Thorpe-Beeston, Mark Johnson, Tom Setchell & Etienne Horner

Hello Ladies

I was wondering if anyone had any insight/reviews on the following private obstetricians (all of which I am considering, but this is so confusing!). Some reviews online are slightly older, and as these obstetricians become more senior - they sometimes have less time/are less available for their patients. Here are the names:

Professor Mark Johnson
Mr. Guy Thorpe-Beeston
Mr. Tom Setchell
Mr. Etienne Horner

Any information would be highly appreciated! I am looking for a fantastic obstetrician (aren't we all!) who is skilled, caring, compassionate, and who has the time really!

Any other names - please shout!

Thanks in advance!

I went for william dennes. Dismissed two of your names based on my GP recommendations. Hope this helps a little!

Thank you so much - will look him up!

No names... but why are they all male? Hmm

Topsy34 · 30/07/2015 09:02

Hope you dont mind me asking, do you have medical conditions that require a obstetrcian?

A midwife can be far better in child birth than a doctor....just being nosey :)

In England a private obstetrician is a bit pointless unless you want a CS or instrumental delivery (why would you?).

tharya · 30/07/2015 09:15

I sadly have a medical (heart) condition that requires me to have a c section - I am also coming from overseas so not entitled to NHS care. Hence the question Smile

Do they have to be in London? Because people I know rave about Laurence Impey in Oxford.

Bonsoir · 30/07/2015 09:59

Fair enough, and that information ought to guide your choice of ob.

wtfih · 30/07/2015 10:12

Have you looked at Roshni Patel? She specialises in maternal heart issues during pregnancy, is lovely and well regarded as a professional.

GenevaMaybe · 30/07/2015 10:13

Highly recommend Con Kelleher who did my c-section last summer. Really good

tharya · 30/07/2015 17:29

CommanderShepard - thank you for the recommendation, unfortunately has to be London for us as that's where we have a home (just easier I suppose!) Smile

wtfih - I have looked her up and she sounds amazing, have booked a meet and greet in a couple of weeks time, thank you! Smile

GenevaMaybe - thank you will definitely look him up! Smile

David Williams? He is one of very few obstetric physicians.

I had an ELCS with Etienne Horner at Lindo Wing also for a heart condition. He is a very nice, very skilled man, but is let down by his secretary, who apparently covers a few other doctors. That mens emails are not always answered promptly and phone calls are not returned. At the beginning I was unsure whether he was aware of it or not, and assumed he just did not care whether he had another patient (I was surprised considering we were paying £7+ for his services and £6K+ for the birth.)

Apart from that one issue, I felt very safe with him. The ELCS experience with him was brilliant, and he also gave me an amazing scar that you can barely see. He was vigilant in aftercare and visited me every day in the Lindo Wing.

Guy Thorpe-Beeston has been doing my scans (high risk multiple birth but on NHS so can't comment on all round private care) and I've really liked him - very calm, sensible and reassuring. Wish he was doing my CS. He has however been the private consultant for 6 of our friends' children and the parents all thought he was brilliant.

FlumptyDumpty · 02/08/2015 08:10

I had my DD 4 weeks ago, and was under the care of Roshni Patel, but scanned with Guy Thorpe Beeston. I couldn't rate Roshni any higher - she was absolutely fantastic. Very caring but also a formidably bright doctor. I developed complications towards the end which necessitated early delivery, and Roshni was extremely diligent about identifying the time at which DD would be better out than in. I trusted her judgement 100%, which as somebody who suffers with anxiety is very unusual! I would definitely go with her again if I had more DCs

That said, Guy is also very kind and is very very experienced and knowledgeable. I would also be very happy to be under his care. As it was, scanning with him meant I had the benefit of both their expertise.

Why don't you ask to do a quick meet and greet with those on your shortlist? I would think you'd get a gut feel from that as to who is right for you.
