I'm only 5'3" and this is my first. 40+1 wks today.
Had a scan on weds and the midwife reckons he's 10 lbs or very close Shock
Anyone given birth to a big baby vaginally? What kind of damage can I expect my fanjo to sustain?? Confused

I have heard not to trust growth scans too much but had an 9lber. Was only 8st something with 24 in waist pre pregnancy. No stitches needed. Quick labour with only about half an hrs worth of gas and air needed.

I realise everybody is different but just want you to know birth can be a positive experience even with bigger babies

good luck Flowers

Was it a detailed 3D scan or one where the picture is grainy? If grainy I wouldn't worry because they are always off. If 3D type they are very accurate and I would be asking to speak to someone about options. DS was 10lb6oz and I had him via CS. Given what he did to my stomach I wasn't going to allow an opportunity for my neither regions to be redesigned.

SweetPeaPods · 12/04/2015 03:20

Not sure how true it is but apparently bigger babies are easier to deliver. Something to so with gravity helping them so you might surprise yourself.
Good luck, and enjoy it if you can!

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 12/04/2015 03:32

My second was about that, and I'm 5'4", and only required stitches because of a previous episiotomy that re-opened. Standing birth, midwife, no drugs, don't stress too much.

itsveryyou · 12/04/2015 03:44

Was induced at 41+4 and had 9lb13 baby in birthing pool, with some gas and air. It was far easier than first delivery, which was 8lb12 induced on dry land. Yes several internal stitches, but no probs recovering. Try not to worry about the size, positioning is probably more of an issue than baby's weight. Good luck!

I had a 9lb 1oz baby, I'm 5'ft3in and had a third degree tear and ended up having to have a sphincterplasty due to the birth injuries sustained.

I'm sure you will be fine, my midwife was too busy to come in to the room and told my DH to get me to push with out checking how far dilated I was. I had shocking maternity care, I'm sure yours will be much better.!Flowers

DS was 9lb4 but his head circumference was off the charts - the rest of him more or less fell out after his giant head made it through.

I delivered with gas and air and had a second degree tear, healed easily, no lasting issues at all.

Four125 · 12/04/2015 04:42

Eldest was 9lbs 8, no stitches, no intervention, only gas and air.
First contraction to birth within 4 hours, I'm 5ft 1.

6LittleOnes · 12/04/2015 05:07

I've done it. Ds2 was 10lb exactly. It wasn't that bad, he got a little stuck at the shoulders but was easily helped by the midwife. Just had gas and air. Didn't tear. Was actually one of my easiest labours.

AGrinWithoutACat · 12/04/2015 05:13

I'm 5'6" and DC2 was 10lb born with just a little tear, DC3 was slightly smaller at 9lb 5oz and no damage, my Mum is just under 5" and had 2 10lb babies with no difficulty

Think it is less to do with height and more to do with hips Smile I would chat through your concerns with your midwife as she will be able to reassure you

Joyfulldeathsquad · 12/04/2015 05:20

On my 3d scan the sonographer said I was more weeks ahead than I thought as baby was very large.

9.10lb Dd was and ended up having ECS. Her head like her dad was too big to come out my fanjo

fuctifino · 12/04/2015 05:32

My twin sister had a 10lb9oz vaginally, gas and air only, no tearing.
I had a 6lb7oz with 2nd degree tear. Hers was a more controlled birth apparently Wink

Primaryteach87 · 12/04/2015 06:28

Yes- 6 weeks ago. Had episiotomy third degree year which needed repairing. At first I was horrified (double incontinence!) but now no major issues or pain. In my hospital trust it is standard to go to theatre for this. Do insist if they attempt to repair outside of theatre.

breakfastinbread · 12/04/2015 07:08

Ha! MIL did with dh. He was almost 11lb!!

No wonder they don't speak that often.

I wonder if the two are connected...

JohnPlayingDarts · 12/04/2015 07:14

My DS2 was 10lbs 5oz and was born vaginally with gas and air. I needed 2 stitches after. I won't lie it was tough getting his head out but after that no problem. Don't trust the growth scans I was told week before he was born no bigger than 8lbs so he was a big surprise!

polarbearshuffle · 12/04/2015 07:16

Ds was 9lb 15. I had to have forceps but I think that was due to the length of my labour rather than his size. When he was weighed the midwife was shocked that he weighed so much because he didn't look it! Grin

Also I know a couple of people who have been told they were having bigger babies but didn't. I'm not sure how accurate the scans are.

lottomum · 12/04/2015 07:22

I had lovely easy births with 2 of mine who were 9lb and 9lb 7oz, no tears stitches etc and my 9lb 7oz was about 5hrs start to finish and I was a able to leave hospital a few hours later.
My final dc was far more complicated at 11lb and 60cm long! thankfully a fantastic midwife sent me for a growth scan (which was only about 4oz out) as she was concerned which resulted in a c section the following day.

SewingAndCakes · 12/04/2015 07:22

DS's were 9lb7, 9lb5, and 9lb3, all vaginal births. I had ventouse/forceps with 2 and some degree of tearing and episiotomy with all of them.

LynetteScavo · 12/04/2015 07:30

It's all about the size of the baby's head.

EsmereldaPB · 12/04/2015 07:37

DC3 was 10lbs13 and born vaginally, I had a very quick pushing stage it was about 10 mins from transition to him being born. I had a slight tear that needed a couple of stitches.

CaulkheadUpNorth · 12/04/2015 07:40

My friends daughter was born weighting 10lb 3. She has a home birth with only a tens machine and her son slept through it all (so she must have been quiet) Shock

I'm a bit in awe of her sometimes.

DrinkGirlsFeck · 12/04/2015 07:42

I did. No stitches. Gas and air water birth. Grin

StrawberryTallCake · 12/04/2015 07:44

I did, the midwife didn't help me with when to push at all - she stood in the corner of the room looking a bit scared (I was very quiet not swearing FYI).

My 10lb 5 baby meant I had a bit of a tear and I now have slight prolapse issues which may or may not have been caused by the birth. If I were to have another baby I would opt for a cs.

RiojaHaze · 12/04/2015 07:47

A friend had a 10lbs 14 baby vaginally and was fine. She was told her second was going to be a lot bigger and they fully monitored her pregnancy...and DC2 was 9lbs.

JohnFarleysRuskin · 12/04/2015 07:49

Large headed 9lber here. (Dh can't wear hats because his head is so large!)

I'm 5"1 and small. It was fine- good actually. Gas and air.

(It was the others that did me in ;))
