I'm only 5'3" and this is my first. 40+1 wks today.
Had a scan on weds and the midwife reckons he's 10 lbs or very close Shock
Anyone given birth to a big baby vaginally? What kind of damage can I expect my fanjo to sustain?? Confused

I did. 10.5lb with gas and air. Small episiotomy, so some stitches, but healed well. Had a tens on and then a water birth (recommend both). I really think it's the luck of the draw when it comes to giving birth, but it's certainly possible to have a big baby vaginally with no ongoing problems. Try to relax about it...good luck!

Yep, and she came out in the bag - membranes still intact. Born at home, no tearing. Very quick, very gentle.

SarahJinx · 12/04/2015 08:35

9lb7.5 gas and air and 2 stitches. She was perfectly positioned and the whole thing too four hours. It was fine, much easier than her 9lb2 back to back brother.....

PrincessPilolevuofTONGA · 12/04/2015 08:43

My 10.5lb baby fell out of me. It was straight forward, quick and easy

hazeyjane · 12/04/2015 08:47

I was an 11lb baby, and am still being reminded by my mother 46 years on....

To be honest, i was told that every one of mine was going to be huge - dd1 was 7lb 4oz dd2 was 7lb 6oz and ds was 8lb 9oz (but was an elcs and was larger for a reason).

I think it is more to do with position, dd1 was stuck like a cork, and had to have ventouse, dd2 came out with one push.

Chimchar · 12/04/2015 08:55

My second baby was 10 lbs. gas and air, quick delivery, no stitches. Easiest birth of my three.
Good luck!

ShelaghTurner · 12/04/2015 08:57

5' 2 here and DD2 was 10lb on the nose. I did tear but I also tore with 8lb 10 DD1 I think because I have no patience and both times completely ignored instructions and tried to (successfully) fire them out like peas out of a pea shooter!
But I'm still here with functioning bits!

Jenmk1 · 12/04/2015 08:58

My brother was 10lb, my mum is 5'2". She had him in about 3 hours with just gas & air. I was 7lb & they needed forceps to get me out after about 14 hours...

FiveHoursSleep · 12/04/2015 09:04

My 4 babies were all VBs and ranged from 10lbs 5 to 11lbs 10.
I'm taller than you though- 5 ft 9- and the only one that caused any problems exit-wise was my second who was my smallest. She came face first and I ended up with an episiotomy to get her out in a hurry.
I do have prolapses though, which are probably to do with the size of my offspring.

Grange · 12/04/2015 09:04

I had a 10 lb 12 oz baby and he had shoulder dystocia. The midwives were excellent though because they were prepared for a 'big one'. I had 2 midwives throughout the last stage. I birthed standing up until the last minute when they flipped me on to the bed to open up my pelvis. I was lucky the senior midwife knew her stuff!

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 12/04/2015 09:19

10lb 5, 11lb 10 and an 8lb 10 tiddler!
I'm 5' 7''.
The hardest for me was the first, I think because the mw was letting me make loads of ineffectual noise with my mouth open. Second was at home with a much better mw - although she did some painful rummaging to hook out the shoulder I think.
Mws were nervous about the size of no3, but the home birth consultant was very reassuring, told me scans and fundus height measurements are notoriously ureliable.
A few stitches required each time but no lasting damage sustained Smile.
I think mine were all before the time of controlled birth; I wanted to let it happen slowly with minimum stress and heaving but the midwives just seemed to have the 'let's get this baby out' attitude. The first one actually said that and I'm sure it made me clench! Three and a half hours pushing!
Apparently it's not so much about the hip measurement per se, it's the internal pelvic width.

OOAOML · 12/04/2015 09:39

I'm 5'2" and my second baby was 10lb 4oz. Very easy birth, slight tear probably caused by the fact I panicked and pushed very hard. First vaginal birth for me, as my first child (7lb 11oz) was born after an emergency section.

The vaginal birth was so much easier, and the recovery so much better.

I would also say a lot of growth scans are way out!

Followtheyellowsicktoad · 12/04/2015 09:50

Of my three births my 10lb 11oz delivery was by far the best. 18 months later I still have a warm glow over such a positive experience.

My second (9lb 9) was delivered by ecs so for number 3 I was consultant led and advised away from the birth pool. Shortish labour with gas and air, no stitches, no nothing.

I was vast in pregnancy and fielded plenty of daunting comments about getting such a huge baby out. My hopes were pinned on one wonderful woman who shared her experience of giving birth to a 11lb 7 baby with no problems. She was quite dismissive of the idea of bigger babies always being harder to deliver, hers and mine were both long and thin and well positioned.

Good luck op, however it works out you get a splendid baby at the end!

Gemzybelle · 12/04/2015 11:48

On the flip side I had my DD 3 weeks ago, she was a very petite 5lb10 and I tore badly and had stitches. I don't think the size of baby is always the only contributing factor.

lillamyy1 · 12/04/2015 12:13

Thanks everyone! Most of your posts have made me feel a lot better Grin
A bit worried about prolapse now though, hadn't thought of that before. Confused Is it rectifiable?
It's great that so many of you had big babies without strong painkillers as well, as I'm really hoping for a water birth with just gas and air.
My midwife hasn't been very reassuring - first of all she repeatedly told me not to worry about measuring over, and that the baby wouldn't be too big, then I ended up having a scan due to reduced movements (he's been fine since) and that's when they told me how big he probably was.
They offered me induction at 40wks due to the movements, not the size, and when I discussed it with my midwife she encouraged me to go for it, telling me that if I left it longer he'd grow bigger and then I'd very likely need EMCS Hmm
It was only after speaking to another midwife who also conferred with the consultant who'd offered me the induction that I decided to wait, because she said it'd be safer for both me and baby to try and go into labour naturally than go for induction so soon when my body wasn't ready.
It wasn't a 3D scan though so hopefully they're off and he'll be smaller although I doubt it because his dad is 6'6" and also even though his head is already in my pelvis he can still kick me in the ribs Hmm

Just remember that the head is the first part if the baby to come out (as you already know he isn't breech) and a long baby is not necessarily a big-headed baby. Unless there are urgent reasons to get the baby out, general wisdom is that induction is not a good move especially if the signs are that labour is not about to start naturally.

Muskey · 12/04/2015 13:01

My dd was 10pound 2 ounces. I had an episiotomy due to foetal distress rather than the size of the baby. However I was 12 pound when I was born. I am the youngest of three and my mother is only 5 feet tall. No stitches no nothing

Spamminit · 12/04/2015 13:04

My 2nd son was 11lb on the dot. traumatic labour and delivery as he wouldn't descend and eventually was assisted ventouse delivery.

Now pregnant with my 3rd child and will push for an ELCS

GerbilsAteMyCat · 12/04/2015 13:08

I did.
DS2 was nearly 2 weeks overdue. They reckoned from the scans he was 9lb or so. He was over 10. The labour was long (induced, he was back to back). The midwife shifts kept changing as they wondered why he was taking so long. He was perfect though. Big tear but no stitches needed as the midwife said it was essentially a giant paper cut and would heal better on its own.
I am 5 foot 9.

Millie2013 · 12/04/2015 17:16

Growth scan estimated DD at 5-6lb, she was 8lb14, so they can be way out :)

rallytog1 · 12/04/2015 19:00

Scans aren't very good at estimating weight.

A good friend gave birth vaginally to two 10 pounders. She is short and skinny and reckons they both came out with hardly a graze.

teenagetantrums · 12/04/2015 19:05

I was told with my first he would be 10lb + he was only lb. However my second was 10lb 12oz..both births fine, a few stitches.

TwiggyHeart · 12/04/2015 19:10

DC1 was 9lb6oz, easy labour no pain relief, I don't honestly think size has much to do with it, position of baby is more relevant. You will be absolutely fine!

yougotafastcar · 12/04/2015 19:17

I had DD nearly 3 weeks ago at 49+12, she weighed 10lb 8oz. Was a fairly easy, quick (although didn't feel it at the time!) 4 hour birth from start to finish. I only had gas and air. My best tip is to remember it doesn't last forever and also I gave birth leaning on the upright back of bed on my knees and barely had to push, gravity did most of the work. Good luck & congratulations!

yougotafastcar · 12/04/2015 19:17

Oh and I tore but only second degree and feel mostly fine now!
