I'm only 5'3" and this is my first. 40+1 wks today.
Had a scan on weds and the midwife reckons he's 10 lbs or very close Shock
Anyone given birth to a big baby vaginally? What kind of damage can I expect my fanjo to sustain?? Confused

I was told DC1 would be 10 lb & he came out 6 lb 8oz.

Someone I know had a 12 lber vaginally. She hasn't shared any horror stories about it all. Baby after that was much much smaller but ended up with C-Sec due to failure to progress.

LadyDeadpool · 12/04/2015 19:44

DD was 10lb 4oz labour was 3 hours long and I had 4 stitches. I had more stitches with DS at 9lb 1oz who attempted to fly like superman out of me hmm

I was told that DS2 was a 10lb+ on the growth scan. I also had gestational diabetes so it was not unexpected. I was huge, with a massive bump, so thought they were right. This was in 1992.

DS2 was 8lb10oz, but he was 60cm long at birth, so long and skinny, He never fitted into newborn clothes, he was too long. I had a natural birth with no stiches. Labour was about 10 hrs.

DS2 is still long and skinny, 6'2",32 waist lol.

Apparently, they thought my DM was twins as my DGM was so big. DM was 12lb+ at birth, DGM was 5" tall at the most. She also delivered 3 other DC's after my DM naturally with almost no pain relief.

TakesTwoToTango · 12/04/2015 21:23

One of mine was9lbs 8oz with a 99thcentile head circumference. I needed an episiotomy and had some 2nd deg tearing but otherwise fine.

siscaza · 12/04/2015 21:27

Me me me,!!! DS was 10lbs and I had him at home with just gas and air in 2.5hrs, I'm 5' 4" and a size 12. No ill effects in the fanjo region Grin

TheoriginalLEM · 12/04/2015 21:29

My DD was 9.5Ilbs, vaginal birth, no paint relief and no stitches, i don't know whether thats Grin or Blush

babyiwantabump · 12/04/2015 21:31

Yep . 10lb 9 oz . Home birth. 2nd degree tear but I had the same with 7lb 4oz DD 10 years ago! Was absolutely fine!

RandomMess · 12/04/2015 21:33

I measured small for dates..

I'm 5', have tiny hips and she was 10lb 6oz it was fine.

Head size and shoulder width are more relevant than overall size tbh!

Floralnomad · 12/04/2015 21:33

My DS was 10lb 4 oz , vaginal delivery with gas and air . I had multiple sutures and required a blood transfusion the following day ,it was a not to be repeated experience so I opted for a CS with baby no 2 which was a far better experience and required less pain killers and less time in hospital !

momb · 12/04/2015 21:38

Try not to worry: lots of positive stories here about bigger babies.
The scans/MW are just making educated guesses when it comes to size: I was told to expect a 9lber with DD1. Had a three day unproductive labour: full frequent contractions but little/no dilation and was exhausted. Eventually they induced me and she was born 42+1 weighing only 4lb 14oz, hence no dilation.....

Mousybrown · 12/04/2015 21:40

My last baby was 10lb.......quick labour, 4 hours from them breaking my waters to her being born, only a few pushes, no tearing or stitches. We did have quite a few people appear in the last few mins (I think it was when they realised...it was gonna be a big one and her heart rate dipped abit) and she wasn't delivered on to me as I'd hoped...she was whisked off for a bit of oxygen and a check over.

lunalovegood84 · 12/04/2015 21:40

I didn't manage to give birth vaginally but he was 11 lbs 9 oz. I'm expecting any subsequent babies to be massive (hopefully not quite so big - he was 14 days overdue) and ideally I'd have a vbac so it's good to know it can be done!

Branleuse · 12/04/2015 21:40

yes, ds2 was 10lb and was born on my living room floor. I didnt tear

chuff of steel

happy2bhomely · 12/04/2015 21:42

I delivered an 11lb baby at home, with a tens machine and a little bit of gas and air. No stitches. He was my 4th though.

I've had 5 dc, and I found no truth to the saying that bigger babies are easier to deliver. Ds had such a big head and wide shoulders that he took a long time to come down. Lots of walking and staying upright was needed to move things along. I have definitely found the pushing stage harder with my bigger babies.

StillProcrastinating · 12/04/2015 21:47

First was over 11lbs, second 10lbs. Both vaginal, although forceps with the first because of his shoulders. Bit of damage, I blame the forceps, but Nothing that has required any intervention. Neither of mine was fat, both just very long, and straight into 3-6 months. But I loved that, they were so robust and not fragile at all.

Big bump does not equal big baby, and scanning is notoriously unreliable. Try not to worry and just enjoy your last couple of weeks!

Branleuse · 12/04/2015 21:48

yeah with small babies, you birth the head and then the rest pops out. With a big baby you have to birth the whole thing actively. It was physically pretty hardcore, but i think the fact that i was home and didnt have pain relief meant that i was able to do what i needed to do, in some ways easier than ds1 who was only a bit over 6lb.

5madthings · 12/04/2015 21:51

I am 5 2, all my babies were quite big, biggest 10lb 13oz had him in birth pool, under an hour in labour. No stitches needed. His head circumference was off the chart, 41/42cm? Massive placenta as well. Just lots of gas and air, his was the easiest birth of my five.

I think position of baby makes a ddifference, my hardest birth baby was only 8lb but she was back to back.

5madthings · 12/04/2015 21:52

Btw ihad extra scans as I measured small, my babies were predicted to be 6-7lb... Scans are often inaccurate.

MistyMeena · 12/04/2015 22:17

I am 5ft 0. They said my DC1 was well over 9lb with head off the chart. No CS but he was back to back so tricky. He was 7lb12. He did have a big head though Grin

Beloved72 · 13/04/2015 06:51

Me.

11lbs. Born at home. No stitches. wizards sleeve

lillamyy1 · 13/04/2015 09:35

This is a relief, hearing all these positive stories. I do hope he doesn't stay in there much longer though, getting bigger!
Slightly concerned that if he is long he won't fit into the lovely clothes he's already been given!! DP was a long baby apparently.

5madthings · 13/04/2015 09:40

Only my youngest fitted into newborn clothes, my boys all went straight into 0-3mths and Ds4 pretty much into 3-6mths as he was so long! So make sure you have 0-3 as wrll as newborn. You can always exchange stuff if need be. Good luck, do come back and let us know once baby arrives :)

ChrisQuean · 13/04/2015 09:41

Yes. DS2 was 9lbs 13oz and born vaginally, back to back (!!) at 41+5.

I am 5'1" and weighed about 8st 8 pre pregnancy, so quite petite. DH is only 5'10" so no idea how DS got so big. It was a 2 day labour and I had pre-eclampsia HELLP syndrome, DS2 wasn't engaged, then he was at last minute.

I really should have been c sectioned and was quite unwell after the birth. I had an epidural as don't think I could have managed otherwise.

defineme · 13/04/2015 09:43

My dm tells the tale of her dm warning her not to marry my df because of a similar height difference and the resulting potential for difficult birth, and how in her day it wouldn't have been allowed. Dbr and I were both big babies and dm was fine.
