How quickly can I leave hospital if I have a straightforward birth (2nd DC)?

Can I ask how quickly you managed to get discharged after second or subsequent births? I gave birth to DC1 just after midnight and DH and I were allowed to stay in the delivery room til morning. They then asked me to stay in one more night in the postnatal ward and it was hellish - feeding was fine so I wish I had just gone home the day after the birth.

Now due with DC2 and if there is no medical reason to stay I want to go home ASAP (as soon as I get feeling back in my legs if I have an epidural!)

How quickly did you all manage to go home after straightforward births?!

I had my second son at 22.17, we left the hospital at 3am.

I was in for three days with my first, due to needing antibiotics during the labour.

Thanks everyone, all your posts suggest it could be hours if all is relatively straightforward. Obviously I will stay in if there is an actual reason but will push for a quick discharge if not. Good to know the newborn check can be done elsewhere if necessary. DB is a doctor, will get him to do it if the GP can't!

I had a 3 hour discharge with DD who was my first. I loved it, we got home around 8pm, had a glass of champagne and some dinner and went to bed! Spending time in the postnatal ward was my worst fear.

Meant to say we didn't have to wait for any checks, we went back for them 2 days later (had to be within 48 hours). They just waited for me to do a wee!

Well I managed to be discharged 24 hours after an ECS and 12 hours after an instrumental delivery /epidural so I'm sure they could get you out quicker after a normal delivery !
