Did everyone get tea & toast?!

I always read on here how tea and toast was given to them after they had their DC and it was like the food of the gods..

I was really looking forward to it!!

I didn't get it!

About 4 hours later my mum brought me a tuna sandwich (which was amazing anyway Wink)

Then with DD2... I didn't get it again.

Have I sorely missed out and am I the only one??!

I was given tea and toast by my midwife, who then kept telling me off beause I didn't eat it. I had a mouthful, but I wasn't interested because I was so high on adrenaline and just wanted to stare at DD. Infact, I wasn't hungry at all for at least 24 hours and then suddenly realised I was starving - luckily my DSis had brought me some chocolate which was stashed away next to the bed.

Good job I wasn't hungry really. Had DD late morning and was offered toast, but the only other thing I was given was a cheese sandwhich - two slices of bread, one slice of plastic cheese. It was the most disappointing thing I'd ever been given on a plate. I remember the midwife telling me all the yummy things she'd put down on my menu for teatime, so not sure what went wrong there.

ipswichwitch · 17/01/2014 14:55

Had DS2 5 weeks ago and not only got tea and an impressive pile of toast, but a full cooked lunch with treacle pudding and custard 3 hours later! Plus the chocolate DH bought me

ipswichwitch · 17/01/2014 14:57

Posted too soon
Then my boss showed up a couple of hours later with more chocolate! These people know me so well Grin

EmmaSadie · 17/01/2014 14:59

Nope I missed out on toast too, and hadn't eaten for a day and a half. I wasn't hungry I don't think due to EMCS but I did get a cup of tea. It was the best cup of tea too!

Zara1984 · 17/01/2014 15:02

NO Angry

Didn't get a scrap of anything to eat or drink until 7 hours after DS was born ie when catering staff came round to serve breakfast on the ward

Bexicles · 17/01/2014 15:05

No as I had had an epidural, I eventually got 3 Jacobs crackers and a small packet of cheddar cheese!

yellowsnownoteatwillyou · 17/01/2014 15:14

I got toast then a packed lunch box thing, with sandwich, fruit and yogurt. After my section, don't drink tea.
I managed to throw everything back up again after I got to the ward.
Filled a whole bowl. Wink
Was then given toast with cheese on the side, best thing I have ever eaten!!Grin

FamiliesShareGerms · 17/01/2014 15:17

Nope, I didn't. Sad

mistlethrush · 17/01/2014 15:18

I was promised it in recovery after section - but it didn't come. Then I hadn't been on the ward to request a vegetarian meal for supper (unsurprisingly as I was in labour) so missed supper. As I'd not eaten anything since breakfast the day before that I was somewhat hungry by the time I got breakfast 48 hrs after my last meal...

WheresMyCow · 17/01/2014 15:18

Was made tea when we first got into delivery suite at 1:30 in the morning.

DS arrived just before 6 and both me and DH got tea and toast.

And when I went down to post natal ward, breakfasts were just finishing, so they said that I could go and get something to eat if I wanted. So more tea, fruit juice, weetabix and toast...it was all yummy Grin

The hospital food I had about 4 hours later (no idea what it was) wasn't bad either ShockGrin

Xmasbaby11 · 17/01/2014 15:24

I did get tea and toast but it was nothing special. When you've been ripped to pieces it's little comfort to be given overstewed tea and a couple of pieces of cardboard toast.

Amazed how much people enjoyed it!

Gonnabmummy · 17/01/2014 15:25

Tea, toast and jam and yes food of the gods! It'll never taste as good again it was heavenly x

PastaandCheese · 17/01/2014 16:05

You make a very good point XmasBaby11. I'm not sure why we are all so pleased about it on reflection!

I guess it's all clouds having silver linings although I'm not sure I'd need sunglasses for this one..... That said the being brought tea and toast for me signified the whole process was over. I'd been ripped, stitched and handled enough so perhaps the tray is symbolic of this?!

BikeRunSki · 17/01/2014 16:08

Definitely with DS, particularly as it was breakfast time when we got back to the ward (emcs).
Not sure with dd, she was a crash section and it was 3am when I came round from the GA.

Solo · 17/01/2014 16:11

I got tea after Ds.

With Dd I got tea and some sort of meal (can't remember) and a trifle (which ended up all over Dd's snowsuit in my hospital bag) afterwards. It was evening meal time and Boxing Day and I was very hungry ~ hence not willing to let go of my trifle! Wink which, I managed to salvage and eat!!

gleegeek · 17/01/2014 16:15

No nothing. I ate one of dh's cereal bars I was so hungry. They gave me a j-cloth and a washing up bowl to wash in too. Wasn't impressed and went home pretty quickly which was probably the intention

BornOfFrustration · 17/01/2014 16:31

I got bugger all, always a bit Envy when I read on here about people getting tea and toast.

Rootvegetables · 17/01/2014 18:23

I got a hot chocolate that I still talk about 3 years on, it was from one of those machines that also 'makes' soup, so I know it can't of been that good, I also got a jacket potato and wanted to take it with me when they said I could go home!

Yamyoid · 17/01/2014 18:26

Did with first and yes, it was the best tea and toast ever.
With dc2, labour was so quick that I was still full from dinner so I actually turned down the toast.
That's rubbish that it wasn't offered to you.

glorious · 17/01/2014 20:44

I got a choice of brown or white, jam, marmalade or marmite and tea or hot chocolate. I was so exhausted after a very long labour that I couldn't eat more than one bite Sad But full marks for the lovely midwife for trying!

amandine07 · 18/01/2014 02:28

No I didn't get my tea & toast! Sad

But my midwife did make a big thing about offering it to me and that it was better to have that than a hot meal etc.

Then she buggered off & I never saw her again, despite me assuring OH that she'd be back with it- how naive of me!

So OH sorted out my cup of tea & bought me a plastic sandwich from the hospital shop which took me several hours to summon up the appetite to eat!

Next day I put a food request in with my mother & plotted my rapid escape from the PN ward!

MummyAbroad · 18/01/2014 02:34

No, I didnt get it, I got left in blood and poo and stirrups for 4 hours. It was 1am and no one was around. I think you only get tea and toast if you give birth at a convenient time of day.

Weegiemum · 18/01/2014 02:58

Dd1 and ds were born in Ospadal nan Eilean (Western isles hospital) in Stornoway. We got a fabulous tray of tea (for dh), filter coffee (for me), hot buttered toast, chocolate biscuits and muffins, served on pretty bone China plates and proper cups and saucers. They kept making toast till we were full, and also brought me soup for supper after dd1 was born at 6.30pm

Dd2 (due to me getting an air ambulance evac - I had serious kidney problems) was born in Raigmore hospital in Inverness. There was tea and toast, but it was very much do-it-yourself, though they did bring the pay phone into the delivery room. In Stornoway, calls had to be made at the desk but were free (though that might have been because dh did 6 months as a trainee doc on the ward!!).

TheBookofRuth · 18/01/2014 07:30

That's disgraceful, MummyAbroad, poor you!

All of this is reminding me how dreadful the post-natal care was with DD, and making me dread going through it again with DC2 in a few months.

I want a home birth!!!!! But I'm high risk anyway due to my medical history and ending up having an EMCS with DD - it's not going to be possible, is it? Hmm

MummyAbroad · 18/01/2014 19:36

Sorry for the scare story BookOfRuth - if its any help, that was DS1 and I was all naive and trusting and too polite to shout for help - i was much more demanding when it came to DS2 (and I bought in my own snacks!) - so dont worry second time round you are an expert with the system, it will be much better for you I'm sure!
