How long did your first labours last from start to finish?

Am 34 weeks tomorrow and I think it's finally starting to hit me that sometime in the next 8 weeks there's going to be a baby here!
Lots of people voluntarily offer their birth stories - have heard horror stories like 'I had to be induced and after 3 days of no progress had an emergency c section'.
I know first births tend to be slower than subsequent ones but how long did yours last?

Felt first contraction about 6pm Thursday night. Started to get more painful through the night. Labour ward at aprox 1pm following day and baby born at 8pm that night.

jezzasjockstrap · 01/01/2014 20:03

DD1 : waters broke 7pm with contractions 2-3m apart.
Arrived at hospital 8pm, baby arrived 8.23pm.

DD2 was induced but around 75 minutes.

AmandaCooper · 01/01/2014 20:44

Waters went at 10.45pm. First contraction at 11pm. DS born at 8.50am.

surroundedbyblondes · 01/01/2014 20:50

8 hours start to finish with DD1. She was back to back and 10 days overdue, I was actually in hospital while they prepared to induce me when contractions started naturally.

lorenzo1984 · 02/01/2014 20:10

19 hours from first contraction to birth!

StormyBrid · 02/01/2014 20:15

Forty hours from the first twinge to DD turning up. Was more uncomfortable than painful until the last six hours though.

EugenesAxe · 02/01/2014 20:18

Both mine were about 16 hours for everything. Second maybe an hour shorter. Both second stages short - 30 and 20 mins respectively.

Thesebootsweremadeforwalking · 02/01/2014 20:30

Waters broke 4am Monday, contractions began 4pm Tuesday, 3cm on examination at 2pm Wednesday, baby born 8pm that day. So, 1st contraction to birth was about 30 hours but established labour was only 6 hours.

DC1 was spine to spine, which I this is why my latent phase was longer.

I too am a huge fan of TENS machines - buy extra batteries and electrodes, and get it on as soon as the contractions are recognisable!

pumpkinsweetie · 03/01/2014 14:23

5 and 1/2 hours for pfb, was induced with pessary, had contractions from midnite, had her at 5.30am.
Strangely enough all 4 of my births lasted about 5hrs from 1st contraction.

CrispyFB · 03/01/2014 18:38

I went from first serious pain to ready to push in less than half an hour. Unfortunately being blue lighted to the hospital caused a panic response and everything stalled (and I was directed to push against an unnoticed lip for an hour despite not wanting to push) but start to finish it was more like 3 hours. If I'd been allowed the home birth I wanted (6 hours before their cut off), it would have been more like 40 minutes.

Stated several times, whilst in agony, that I'd been lied to as birth wasn't supposed to be "waters go, baby comes suddenly" like on EastEnders but that was clearly what was happening..

I am unusual though!!

Ended up with c-sections with the rest due to a messed up cervix. Probably caused by pushing against that lip for an hour.

notadoctor · 03/01/2014 19:30

I had twinges at about 11pm and throughout the night - then show at around 6am the next morning. Contractions continued steadily throughout the day - went into hospital at around 6pm when waters broke. DD was born at 11pm that night. So, 24hours total but only around 6 really active. Hoping DC2 (who I'm expecting in a couple of months) will be as straightforward!

plentyofsoap · 03/01/2014 19:48

With both waters went at 1am, contractions within the hour. First born within four hours, second within five. I had sections with both.

littleraysofsunshine · 03/01/2014 22:38

First- 4 hours
Second- 1hour to the exact minute
Third- I'll find out in around three weeks Wink

binger · 03/01/2014 22:45

13 hours for my first but it was totally fine until transition so only last 1 1/2 hours were hard. I used hypno birthing and I do believe it really helped. Hospital wanted to send me home when I first went in as in their opinion I was too calm to be in established labour. I insisted they examine me and I was 9 cm dilated.

Good luck and fingers crossed for a nice relaxed delivery.

Chacha23 · 03/01/2014 22:48

so jealous of all these fast births!

dodi1978 · 04/01/2014 10:28

5 hours from first twinge to having baby. First 2 and a half hours quite bearable, then getting tougher, but still do-able with gas and air. Don't worry!
One of my NCT friends had her first baby within three hours from waking up in a puddle at home...

Chacha23 · 04/01/2014 15:34

well, there's no use worrying, but also don't set your heart on a 4-5 hour birth. Because it may well not happen, and then you risk feeling cheated of what you hoped your birth would be like. I was hoping for a quick natural birth (since it tends to be the norm in my family), so I'm still a little bitter it took 40+ hours and forceps.
Hope for the best, but keep all the possibilities in mind!

mistermakersgloopyglue · 04/01/2014 18:09

First twinges about 11pm on Thursday, ds born around 6pm on the Sunday. Things sort of properly got going on Saturday lunchtime, but had to have an induction drip about 9am on Sunday morning because I was still only at 4cm by then. Angry

IShallCallYouSquishy · 04/01/2014 18:18

Had my first very mild contraction about 8am (thought it was trapped wind) a few more very mild ones over next 4ish hours. Nothing that made me stop what I was doing or think anything was actually happening. Was able to shower, dress, do housework etc. I'd say actual labour where I thought "hmmm think we might have a baby today this is starting to get a bit painful" started around 12:30/13:00 ish. DD was born 14:56.

DC2 due in 8 weeks so hoping for another the same Grin

LetThereBeCupcakes · 04/01/2014 18:32

Waters broke at midnight - I was very pleased as I was in the bathroom to easy to mop up! First twinges at about 3am, went to hospital at about 8am and was 4cm. Ds was born at 3.40pm after 15 minutes of pushing. I also didn't find it that painful - in fact when the midwife said the head was out I asked if she was sure! The pressure was really intense though.

IdaClair · 04/01/2014 21:11

First full term labour was 1 hour 35 mins from first twinge to baby out with 60 minutes of that being spent trying not to push. Second full term labour was 7 hours 35 minutes from waters breaking to birth and vastly preferable. Fast doesn't mean easy in fact sometimes it means feeling like you've been hit by a truck, no time for preferences, travel, partner, medical care, excitement or even understanding, just sudden huge pain in a way you've not been told to expect meaning you actually think it is all terribly wrong...

pingusmum · 04/01/2014 21:18

8 hours from first twinge to holding ds! Had a water birth- fabulous!! V painful, but forgettable iykwim?!?Shock

AntoinetteCosway · 04/01/2014 21:25

54 hours for me. Started with waters going, contracted for 48 hours but didn't progress, ended up being induced and DD arrived 6 hours later.

LabradorMama · 04/01/2014 22:55

3am - waters broke
4.30am - first contraction
6am - arrived at hospital 5cm dilated
6.30am - 10cm dilated and pushing
Sadly he was in an extremely awkward position and I needed a vacuum delivery, he was finally born at 9.30am. Had he been in a normal position I am told he would have been born by 7am.
I was fully expecting a long labour as it was my first but it doesn't always work that way!

Frizz1986 · 05/01/2014 09:53

Started getting uncomfortable pm Friday 20th dec
Braxton hicks style contractions (getting more painful) from friday night on and off until Mon 23rd dec.
Overnight 23rd dec only got 2 hrs sleep as painful contractions all night (but irregular so assumed braxton hicks)
Waters went @ 9am on 24th dec
Arrived at birth centre at 10:10am and was already 6cm.
Baby arrived in the pool at 10:49am.
I started pushing at 10:25am and its my first baby so no way to predict what your labour will be like.
