How long did your first labours last from start to finish?

Am 34 weeks tomorrow and I think it's finally starting to hit me that sometime in the next 8 weeks there's going to be a baby here!
Lots of people voluntarily offer their birth stories - have heard horror stories like 'I had to be induced and after 3 days of no progress had an emergency c section'.
I know first births tend to be slower than subsequent ones but how long did yours last?

contractions on tuesday, stopped by wednesday.

friday night 11pm started again, right thru night and all next day. dd born at 5.27 sat afternoon. 18hrs total. had to have drip put in by about 3.00 in afternoon as it was slowing down.

beepbeep · 18/12/2013 21:43

4hrs 20mins from first twinge, got to hospital fully dilated, DD born within 25 mins. No pain relief, all a bit too quick but very straight forward. She was 2 weeks early.

Whobody · 18/12/2013 21:43

12 hours door to door with first. 3 days on and off with second. Angry

Lovelybitofsquirrel · 18/12/2013 21:44

Had show Wed morning, period pain all day, first contraction at half six Wed eve, waters went overnight, went into hospital at 5am Thu to confirm, was 1cm, went home, back to hosp at 10am, 4cm, taken to delivery room by 11, fully dilated by 2, baby arrived at 6.20pm.
Good luck!

AnitaManeater · 18/12/2013 21:44

DS1 2hrs 36 mins, DD 1hr 45 mins and DS2 45 mins

ugglyboots · 18/12/2013 21:45

Mild contractions at 7am, strong painful contractions started around 5pm (so went to hospital). Started pushing at 8pm. Baby born at 10pm the same day Smile

Quite hard at the end but not as bad as I was expecting.

ThePlatypusAlwaysTriumphs · 18/12/2013 21:49

Woke up at 2am with niggly pains. Ran a bath (as had been drummed into me Grin) By time bath run, contractions stronger, every 4 minutes or so. Still convinced that first labours take hours, went to step into bath, waters broke. Got to hospital at 3am, baby born 6am, so 4 hours in total!

Glad I had a quick labour, but downside was that midwives refused to believe me, and so it was all a bit hectic in the end! Good luck! I always say labour was easy compared to the hell of a 9 mth pregnancy!

MrsDmitriTippensKrushnic · 18/12/2013 21:52

Got woken up by contractions at 1.30am and then had DS1 at 6.30pm - so roughly 17hrs from start to finish although only the last 10 count as established labour. DS2 and DD were 4 and 5hrs established labour, so my first was definitely the longest although not that long in comparison to my friends.

Sleepyfergus · 18/12/2013 21:57

DD1, from first regular contraction to holding her was about 12 hours in all. I'd had twinges earlier on hat day, about 1 and hour which were like period cramps/indigestion. I did t really twig that was the start of it. Oh, and it all happened on her due date, so I think I was in denial until I was gripping into the mantlepiece timing the contractions at every 3 mins!

DD2 from start to finish was 7 hours, barely made it to hospital before she popped out.

Sleepyfergus · 18/12/2013 21:58

Oops, meant to say congrats! All the best for the wonderful journey ahead of you!

2andout · 18/12/2013 22:00

12 hours from 1st twinge to birth. And TENS
machines are fab :)

sillymillyb · 18/12/2013 22:00

Mine was 4 hours from waking up thinking, "ooh I feel a bit weird" to holding ds.

They didn't believe I was in labour when I arrived at ward, but when they examined me I was 10cm. I cried because I had wanted an epidural and had only wanted to have been 4cm Grin

Mindboggle · 18/12/2013 22:04

36 hours from waters breaking to birth of baby: 12 hours of sitting in fluid reading; 12 hours of increasing pain from contractions (after being induced); 11 hours of feeling great and waiting to dilate (post epidural) and about an hour of pushing.
I'd go through it all again in a heartbeat, it was great! Enjoy your day it's over really fast when it comes down to it.

cantthinkofagoodone · 18/12/2013 22:09

10 days of contractions on and off but then :
6pm plug
9pm contracting
Midnight waters
Contracting til 3am then nothing til following lunchtime
From 1-5 contractions getting closer and longer but manageable
Hour getting to hospital
Hour at Hospital

I'm not sure is my answer as v. Stop/start but the painful bit was 2 hours

Auntierosemary · 18/12/2013 22:16

Eleven hours from first contraction to delivery.

IndigoTea · 18/12/2013 22:20

12 hours

ShoeWhore · 18/12/2013 22:21

Just under 6 hours from first contraction to ds' arrival. There were no twinges or anything, it was straight into regular contractions for me.

Strokethefurrywall · 19/12/2013 02:18

Didn't feel anything untoward, went to work, waters broke just after 11am, first contraction at 11.15am, baby arrived at 4pm after hypnobirth.

Hoping for the same this time round, if not a little quicker! Knowing my luck this one will be reluctant to come out!

mamakoukla · 19/12/2013 02:39

Waters broke, contractions started about 10-15 min later at less than 3 min intervals. All done and placenta delivered in under two hours. Have been advised that I might not make it to hospital next time!

I had mentally prepared for at least 14 h. Didn't know quite what hit me Grin

selfdestructivelady · 19/12/2013 09:26

Waters broke at 1 am contractions strated immediatley right on top of each other so I was taken in to hospital even though I was not dilated. After 23 hours was told I was oly 2 cms dilated.

I remember panicking thinking my labor was gonna be days but half hour later I wanted to push. Mws said I was being silly but I insisted they check me and they said shit this baby is just waiting to be born. Cue mad rush off the ward into deliveey and ds was born after 30 miniutes of puahing.

So even if it seems slow remeber things can speed up all done on a quarter of the normal dose of pethadine.

LovesToBake · 19/12/2013 11:24

3 hours from first sign (waters breaking, followed quickly by intense contractions) to baby in arms. I appreciate this is quite unusual for a first but it can happen!

Rosebug258 · 19/12/2013 11:28

1 hour 12 mins was induced at 39 weeks and in hospital

Expecting 2nd to be quicker...

LumpyBumpyMum · 19/12/2013 11:29

36 hours start to finish! She was premature though. I stayed at 5-6cms for around 12 hours. Doctors left me like that because they wanted DD to stay in as long as possible. She was so tiny though, so labour was not that painful.

Badvocatyuletide · 19/12/2013 11:32

Ds1 - 12 hours
Ds2 - 4 days :)

Katnisscupcake · 19/12/2013 11:43

Was induced due to GD at 38w5days. In on the Friday morning, first pessary at 10am and contractions started within about 30 minutes. Finally gave birth on the Monday. Horrendous pain, failed epidural (only numbed half my body), ventouse delivery and episiotomy. All in all horrendous.

BUT - wouldn't be without DD for the world and you really DO get over it (although you never forget...).
