Being induced today (39+1), eek!

I'm terrified. Please hold my hand!

Being induced because blood pressure is high and they found 1+ protein in my urine. I also have a UTI (not sure if that makes a difference).

Baby is a boy (according to 2 sonographers. I'm 39+1 today.

DH is with me. Am on my way home to pick up my hospital bag, then back to ante-natal ward. Eek!

Goodluck op ! And then....?

violetbean · 13/12/2013 17:43

Sorry all, had visitors!

So she got an ultrasound machine thingy and scanned me (I remember hardly any of this as I was totally out of it on the entonox. And it turned out baby was breech, despite my having been told he was head down by about 10 midwives since my 32 week appointment. Funny thing is, only person who said he felt like he might be breech was that student midwife who I saw earlier on Thursday, but she immediately said 'but he can't be as you wouldn't have been induced if he was...' Confused

Immediately following the ultrasound around 20 people rushed into the room and started prep for an emergency c-section. By this point I was 8cm dilated and screaming the place down. They thrust a pen into my hand and asked me to sign and print my name on a piece of yellow paper to consent to the section. I remember thinking 'get DH to consent for me, damnit!' but just to get things going faster I signed the paper without reading a word on it. must have looked like a 2 year old's handwriting, hehe

Then what?!

pudseypie · 13/12/2013 17:52

and??!!!

pumpkinsweetie · 13/12/2013 17:54

And.....

violetbean · 13/12/2013 18:48

So they took me into theatre and one guy said 'We need to give general anaesthetic, can't do an epidural because of bloods...' (these are DH's recollections, I don't really remember much after this point). Then another guy said 'We can't give general anaesthetic with her blood pressure this high' (DH thinks it was 195/120 at once point). So I was lying there on this tiny operating table, having almost constant contractions (around 8cm dilated), screaming, and they had to give me blood pressure lowering meds and wait for them to take effect before they could put me under. They tried to strap my legs to the operating table but I kept kicking them free and I was just shouting and screaming. Once my blood pressure reached an acceptable level, they gave me the general anaesthetic and I remember a guy saying 'try to keep your eyes open and look at me' and so I did until I finally succumbed to the anaesthetic.

So the next thing I remember is waking up at around 3 this morning in a ward (the high risk bay of the labour ward) being looked after by DH, the lovely midwife who diagnosed the breech and a really nice doctor. And there was a gorgeous cuddly baby boy who they handed to me for skin to skin. They were still so worried about my blood pressure that they were taking readings every 15 min through the whole night and the midwife hardly left my side. DH was asked to leave around 4am and went home for a few hours' sleep. I had cuddles with our little one for a few blissful hours and then had some sleep myself. DH came back in around 10am and we've been visited by consultants, senior registrars, a physio, a baby specialist and an army of lovely midwives. I've also had a chest x-ray to check I don't have a chest infection. I've been on 3 types of medication to lower my blood pressure (including oral and intravenous) and have had a rainbow of painkillers for the c-section scar pain which came on later this afternoon. So grateful to all those who have helped us bring our little man safely into the world, in pretty difficult circumstances! Thanks

Even though we're on the labour ward that doesn't usually allow visitors, they made an exception so we could have our parents visit, which was lovely.

DH has gone home now and we've been told I'll probably move up to the maternity (post-natal) ward tomorrow. And we might be allowed home on Sunday or Monday, just in time for DH's birthday on Tuesday!

Our little one was born a chunky 9lbs, 9oz, at 11.11pm on the 12/12/13. Grin

His names are Daniel Mark Richard and our surname begins with O.

It was a dramatic beginning for Daniel but he is SO worth every second of fear and pain we went through! We are so in love with him Smile

The End (or really, The Beginning...)

Wine if you made it through the whole saga! Grin

pudseypie · 13/12/2013 20:11

Aww huge congratulations! ! Am so pleased for you. Welcome to the world Daniel! Thanks

oh and best tip I had for recovering from c section is to put a sanitary towel along the front waistband of your knickers to cushion the healing wound. Wish I'd been told that sooner after mine!

ummeadam83 · 13/12/2013 20:39

Just have read your post and I am in tears remembering my time . Congratulations on having a boy ..

Haahoooo · 13/12/2013 21:32

Congratulations and really well done! Welcome little Daniel! Enjoy those lovely first cuddles and look after yourself!

I second the tip re sanitary pads. Also really rest as much as you can, don't try and lift / carry things before you're ready, take pain relief before the pain returns, and generally be nice to yourself.

violetbean · 13/12/2013 22:32

Thanks so much everyone! Smile Great tip re sanitary pad too. Will try to get some rest! Grin
