How late is too late? Anyone held out against induction or c/s?

How late can you go? How was baby? Postmature?

dd1 was born at 43 weeks, still had vernix and was perfectly peachy, same for dd2 at 42 weeks, how far 'overdue' are you? you might just be a slow cooker too.

Just 7 days and last child was born 10 days late but ended up emergency c-section due to undiagnosed breech and meconium.

They have me booked for c-section at term +9 and am wondering whether to hold out.

I think I am a slow cooker - only felt 'ready' for baby in last few days really.

I have just had dd3, and held out for 42 weeks, had c/s in the end, but was in labour, and it was nice to know that she was ready to come out IYKWIM. I was afraid, given gestation of my other 2 that having an early c/s would resilt in me having a relatively premature baby.

ps, think carefully about any kind of induction if you've had a section, it can lead to complications, better to sit it out IMO, Hoping you start contracting soon!!

they don't want to do any induction just go straight to elective c/s do not pass go and do not collect £200

I'd hold out, I think you'll know when you're ready, 7 days over is nothing IMO, maybe have a rethink in a week?

I was induced at 11 days overdue, and baby was "postmature" - lots of long hair, long fingernails, and a big size (9lb 8oz). BUT I had fibroids which prevented his head engaging (otherwise I think I'd have gone into labour naturally a few days earlier) and also I had a show the morning of the induction, so my body was very slowly gearing itself up for labour.

mine were all slow cookers 3 weeks over. All born with plenty of vernix and no signs of postmaturity. nearly all babies come when they are ready. They are not aware that there is a timetable, it's just us!!
It's very hard to wait when you are big, heavy and uncomfortable and you have immense pressure from doctors. But you are doing the best thing for your baby as long as monitoring shows that all is still A. ok.

Why not ask for a scan to assess bloodflow thru placenta, etc, and then decide whether it is safe to wait longer.

I held out until 42 weeks and then had an induction which was a bit of a mess and ended up with an emergency c-section. I was against induction but they told me (this turned out not to be the case) that I was about to start anyway so they may as well "help me along". Ds was eventually born at 42+2 and was 10lb 5oz! Long nails and wrinkly but of course, utterly gorgeous!

I hope it goes well for you Flum. I understand that the average pregnancy should be 41 weeks anyway so why they start talking about induction at 40+1 I don't know!! Smile

DD was born at 44 weeks (huge dates cock up) - normal, natural labour.

She was peeling from head to toe like she'd been dropped in acid, and acted like a 4 week old baby - holding head up, looking round the room, focussing etc (only realised just how developed she was when I had DS to compare to), but perfect in every way.

I was ill for a few days afterwards, but I don't know if it was due to manky placenta, reaction to placenta injection thingy (forgotten its name), or any other number of things.

My friend has had several very overdue ones too, with no problems.

Placenta scan sounds the best option to help with your decision.

FlameBoo · 18/06/2006 14:26

Oh, 8lb 5oz.... the same as DS who was born on due date, so don't know really what size she might have been if she had been earlier iyswim

Flum · 18/06/2006 21:22

mmmm interesting. yes apparently I arrived 3 weeks late. and my dd was 11 days late.

I think will postpone the c-section until am term +14 and see what happens in meantime. am newly confident as at 'overdue check today I let the midwife inspect my cervix and she said baby was engaged and I was 2 cm dilated - so at least body is getting ready.....

thanks all for your comments
