Orgasm during childbirth?! Tell me this is a lie!!

A friend of mine has a very competitive MIL. This friend has just given birth to her first, a nightmare labour with every possible intervention you could imagine (she's cool about it, bless her). Her MIL won't stop going on how amazing all her births were, saying how she just 'breathed the babies out' and how all her births were such ecstatic, spiritual experiences that she actually had an orgasm during each one!

Now I know a birth can be enjoyable, but an orgasm??? I've never heard this happening. Is this a case of one-upmanship? I told my friend that there's only one place to find out and that's Mumsnet... so what do you think?

The best bit was during the final stages when my hippy midwife said to me in her Calm Soothing Voice: "Tell me, do you have any mental blockages? What are you worried about at this moment?"

And I looked at my DH and I turned to her and said, very slowly, "I'm worried because a big fat baby is going to rip its way out of my fucking twat."

She looked a bit shocked

bloody hippy

I just spat coffee all over the monitor.....and it is your fault, young lady!

intergalacticwalrus · 09/06/2006 15:18

All I remember in labour is calling the midwife a c*nt after she told me to stop screaming so I could conserve some energy

intergalacticwalrus · 09/06/2006 15:19

Believe me, calling some fat dumpy battleaxe a c*nt was far more liberating and joyful than any orgasm.

madmarchhare · 09/06/2006 15:45

peachyClair · 09/06/2006 16:40

cluckcluck, I don't think anyone meant that xperiencing those feelings is freaky- its the women who beg their MW to masturbate them or whatever. there's a huge diffence!

can't say I ever experienced it, but I do remember my Psych Lecturer syaingt hat in some people the pleasure and pain areas of the brain overlap or co-stimulate or something, which I guess would explain it?

peachyClair · 09/06/2006 16:44

Quote from born free site:"I had been told to expect a 'dogging pain,' but was unprepared for the sensation of sexual ecstasy, the voluptuous feeling of penetration....Crouched on my knees on the little afghan, I caught the infant who rushed from my vagina into the small world between my legs, in the midst of an extraordinary orgasm from the inside out."

What I want to know is, what did that poor Afghan do to her?

Blossomhill · 09/06/2006 16:44

prepuce, but has anyone ever asked you to masturbate them? Shock

While I'm sure that, if it happens it happens, and that is a normal physiological reaction to intense pressure and hormornal changes, but just how many women ask their MW to masturbate them??? Not many I wouldn't think.

And even fewer would have sex during labour a la the 'bornfree' website, I would have though.

Blandmum · 09/06/2006 17:40

i've read OP and about the first 50 posts and am furious! ffs, what is it that is debasing about sexual pleasure? Why is it that if a woman is turned on by the act of childbirth or breastfeeding for that matter there is something somehow perverse about it? Just makes me so angry to hear that sort of absolute victorian bullshit.

it is why we are in such a bad way in terms of sexuality being equated with something dirty to be kept away from the nice things in life.

i'm nearly speechless about this!

pupuce · 09/06/2006 18:51

Well said Sophable....

FrannyandZooey · 09/06/2006 18:53

Hoorah sophable. Have been sitting here struggling to express what was so wrong about so much of what was said on here.

mousiemousie · 09/06/2006 19:00

Good luck to anyone who has an orgasm whilst giving birth - all adverse comments clearly due to jealousy!

Sadly the birth experience was far from orgasmic for me Sad

cluckcluckcluck · 09/06/2006 19:22

Thanks Sophable Smile. You can always be relied upon to be the voice of reason. I was getting crosser and crosser and upset, really.
FWIW I am not ashamed of it. Nor am I ashamed of the fact that I find breastfeeding pleasurable, even sensual at times. It is meant to be like that I think - motherhood isn't martyrdom and you don't get a bigger badge if you suffer more.

juuule · 09/06/2006 19:41

Well put, Sophable.

Heathcliffscathy · 09/06/2006 19:41

no one is saying that you 'have' to find childbirth pleasurable. of course not. but asserting that women that do find it pleasurable and/or sensual and/or sexually arousing are perverse in some way is despicable and demonstrative of an incredibly unhealthy attitude to something that is an intrisic part of human nature.

really want to know who you are cluckcluckcluck now....
