Has anyone eaten their placenta?

Sorry if this has been done. I'm just curious. I suspect it costs a fortune to get it whatevered into pills - and I'd be considered mental by friends and family if I did - so probably out for me. Yet I'm intrigued...

I'm a MW, have attended a home birth where the woman fried her placenta afterwards with onions... she enjoyed it so much she even bagged up some of it for the freezer.....

I saw a woman take a small bit that was going to be made into some kind of homeopathic remedy for her. Not sure who by but knowing how homeopathy works there would be virtually no placenta by the time she took the dose. I think it was to make an emotionally supportive/balancing remedy.

I could probably make an essence out of it (like the bach flower essences/rescue remedy) though I am a student until I get the homework in. There wouldn't necessarily have to be any actual placenta in the mix as it could be done through glass. I could pm you with how to do it.

The time it took to sodding come out of me I wouldn't have gone near it had I not been sat on a commode and had no choice but to check it was the placenta falling out and not another baby

I always consider the placenta a sadistic back-kick from the universe.

Really, having gotten the baby out, shouldn't that be it?

Further pain for a chunk of liverish looking glop is Not A Happy Ending, in my book, and asking me to then cook it when I should be regally enjoying the fruits of my labour (literally) is beyond ill-mannered.

Take a vitamin supplement, and let the midwife deal with it, I say.

When you consider that herbivores such as cows and sheep eat their placentas (I state these two as I have witnessed it) it can be assumed that this is an entirely normal biological thing to do with benefits to the mother.

Unless you think cows are field house proud

The poo everywhere would suggest not.

Pandemoniaa · 18/09/2012 15:31

I saw my placenta. It did not look at all inviting. In any case, I wanted a Kit-Kat.

marshmallowpies · 18/09/2012 15:32

Didn't even SEE mine. Or the umbilical cord. Bit sad really, would have been curious to see what was keeping DD sustained all that time...

Kayano · 18/09/2012 15:33

Some animals eat their partners and babies do I don't think we can take our lead from what the cows do Hmm

Grin
elfycat · 18/09/2012 15:33

disclaimer: I had no intention of eating mine and so didn't. I had lots of things with words like 'green & blacks' on them for afterwards. I support weirdness though.

Frontpaw · 18/09/2012 15:33

I'm veggie. Not sure where that would put me.

vezzie · 18/09/2012 15:33

I know someone who had placenta smoothies. Her husband refused to make them for her and she did it herself.

noblegiraffe · 18/09/2012 15:34

Rabbits eat their own poo, as do other animals. I don't fancy it, personally.

squeakytoy · 18/09/2012 15:34

no such thing as a vegetarian cannibal Frontpaw.. Grin

Probably about the only one of my daughter's leftovers I haven't finished off.

elfycat · 18/09/2012 15:35

Veggies can eat placenta in the same way vegan babies can have breast milk.
