Has anyone eaten their placenta?

Sorry if this has been done. I'm just curious. I suspect it costs a fortune to get it whatevered into pills - and I'd be considered mental by friends and family if I did - so probably out for me. Yet I'm intrigued...

I reaaaaally don't like the thought of it but I want to be a midwife so need to get my head around it ha!

GoldShip · 18/09/2012 16:27

I made a topic about lotus birth a few weeks ago. That's really interesting too!

FruitSaladIsNotPudding · 18/09/2012 16:27

See, I totally get the concept of eating your placenta. I just can't figure out a way of doing it that I can stomach (excuse the pun).

HecateHarshPants · 18/09/2012 16:27

Why would someone eat their placenta?

I saw mine both times. Massive things! Fascinating. Veins and everything. I didn't find it disgusting or anything, but I can't for the life of me think why it's a good idea to eat the bugger.

If I was starving, I would. hell, if I was starving, I'd eat yours Grin but apart from that? Why would you? Honest question.

FruitSaladIsNotPudding · 18/09/2012 16:31

Apparently it is full of nutrients which help you recover quicker from childbirth, like iron.

And (anecdotally) I've heard it can stop you getting all teary on day 3 - I think the theory is it contains hormones and it is hormone levels crashing which cause you to feel all emotional.

FruitSaladIsNotPudding · 18/09/2012 16:32

Perhaps I should change my name to PlacentaIsNotPudding. Hmm, I quite like that.

valiumredhead · 18/09/2012 16:33

Full of iron and nutrients - I think animals eat theirs as a boost after giving birth.

HecateHarshPants · 18/09/2012 16:36

sod that. I'd pop myself some sanatagen Grin

I suppose since other animals do it, it's probably the natural/instinctive thing to do, makes sense. Nature doesn't waste anything. but nah. Could no more do it than have a kidney taken out and fry it up with some onions Grin

snigger · 18/09/2012 16:41

I actually growled at DH as his hand strayed toward my post-push toast.

Bastard paid me back by bringing me a fruit basket the next day when I specifically demanded requested the rawest possible cow slices on squeaky white bread with horseradish. Never has a pear been thrown so hard, or with such feeling, as on that day.

TeaBrick · 18/09/2012 16:42

What Orenishii said

TittyWhistles · 18/09/2012 16:44

Animal eat the placenta of their young after giving birth because its scent can entice predators to the fact that there's a juicy defenceless newborn and a weak adult nearby.
Placenta, once the baby has been born is a waste product, Therefore BBBLEEEUUGGHHH

x2boys · 18/09/2012 16:48

i had a quick peak as i was being sewn up stitches inside and out with ds1 did nt look too appetising with ds2 ventouse delivery and they whipped it away i cant imagine why you would want to eat it to be honest

squeakytoy · 18/09/2012 16:49

"Veggies can eat placenta in the same way vegan babies can have breast milk."

There is no such thing in my view as a vegan baby! Only a parent who decides that their child will be vegan. And I am sure that is not even comparable to eating a placenta, which is to all intents and purposes a piece of human meat. It has blood in it.. it was a living organ at one point.

RobinSparkles · 18/09/2012 16:50

I never.

I do wonder what it would taste like though! I wonder if it would taste like steak?

I didn't get to see DD1's and felt a bit sad about it. I was haemorrhaging so they were panicking about getting a drip in.

I saw DD2's and the MW talked me through it. So fascinating!

elliejjtiny · 18/09/2012 16:55

I saw all 3 of my placentas. I contemplated burying them in the garden and planting a tree on top but as DH pointed out it would be one of those things I would never get round to doing and I'd have 3 placentas in my freezer for years.

millionlovesongslater · 18/09/2012 16:58

My boss has stored his son's placenta in the freezer for Christmas. I kid you not.

He once said something about it being in with the chicken nuggets, which turned my stomach like nothing has ever done before.

I know I'm a wimp but I haven't even been to his house since because I'm scared the placenta will come crawling out of the freezer at me.

elfycat · 18/09/2012 17:00

So if a vegan/vegetarian chews their nails, or the skin around or bites their lips or chews at a piece of cheek they're eating meat? It's not meat by any definition of something being maimed or killed.

FutureNannyOgg · 18/09/2012 17:06

IPEN do a basic home encapsulation kit, with loads of instructions for £18. You can also hire the fancy kit placentanetwork.com/placenta/DIY-Hire-Kits.asp

I encapsulated mine at home with the basic kit, it's a bit of a faff, but that is why people charge. When finished the pills are just like any other capsule, the placenta is reduced to powder.

I also once saw a recipe for chocolate truffles, made with the powder.

Frontpaw · 18/09/2012 17:38

What a waste of chocolate.

HecateHarshPants · 18/09/2012 18:07

I bet it's a bit like liver. Or heart maybe.

Frontpaw · 18/09/2012 18:11

Oh that's ok then.

Still no sale.

valiumredhead · 18/09/2012 18:12

I imagined it to taste like liver and I love that so don't think it would've bothered me tbh.

LimeLeafLizard · 18/09/2012 18:22

I know someone who buried their placenta and planted a tree on top. A fox dug it up the next day. Imagine having to clean up the garden!

MrDobalina · 18/09/2012 18:23

nope! but i worked with a vet who ate horse testicles that she had castrated! (or at least she said she did, i never saw her)

valiumredhead · 18/09/2012 18:25

I have eaten sheep's testicles.
