i had 2nd degree with first.
was wondering if it tends to happen again for most?
midwife says it probably wont.

I'm sorry but I'm not sure how she can know.

I did tear with DD2, I'm afraid, but on the other hand I only had an eight-minute second stage and I think I pushed too hard.

SoupDragon · 14/02/2006 21:06

All depends how well you healed and there's no real way of knowing.

3rd degree with DS1, tear plus episiotomy (to protect original tear) with DS2, 2nd degree with DD. TBH, none of them have caused me any trouble.

ShaysMummy · 14/02/2006 21:06

i dont know how she knows, i think she was trying to be nice, which is what i dont want!!
thanks for your reply.

No, no tears at all with ds2 and he was 2lb heavier than ds1. I felt I tore with ds1 because I was encouraged to push, so for ds2 I told the midwives I didn't want to do any active pushing. They really helped me to control the second stage by NOT pushing. Only took about 5mins.

Miaou · 14/02/2006 21:09

I had episiotomy with no. 1, tore a little (but not along my scar) with no. 2. Didn't tear at all with no. 3 but was in a pool which might have helped.

MrsSpoon · 14/02/2006 21:09

2nd degree tear with DS2 but he was out in one almighty push which made it worth it, IMO the recovery/healing was much better than the episiotomy with DS1.

Miaou · 14/02/2006 21:10

Shaysmummy my episiotomy scar sometimes hurts and that was done 8 years ago! (it was a bit of a hatchet job ). Don't think that will have any impact on whether you will tear again.

Marne · 14/02/2006 21:10

I want to know too! im due in 4 weeks with no2 and i had a second degree tear, im realy worried about tearing again.

ShaysMummy · 14/02/2006 21:13

i have heard it is better to tear than to be cut as when you are cut the sinews are crushed or something is more painful, also, they have to guess where you need more room, whereas if you tear, your body decides.
i was in pool when i got my 2nd degree but i also was encouraged to just push. i dont remember being told to do any panting.
i will hopefully be in pool again.

Good news for you - nasty nasty nasty third degree tear with DD1 - millions of stiches, very painful.........

NO tear or stiches whatsoever with DD2 - Hurrah hurrah hurrah!!!!!!

(Although I do have to confess that DD1 was 8lb and 4 days late, had the biggest head in the entire universe AND I was pushing for FIVE HOURS!!! - DD1 was a month early, 5lbs and tiny head - so, erm, slighty different circumstances.)

Ahem.

expatinscotland · 14/02/2006 21:13

Nope! Had a massive episiotomy w/DD1 - forceps delivery.

Only a graze w/DD2

ShaysMummy · 14/02/2006 21:15

i was worried about my tear hurting as ds1 is only 7 months old, but if your episi is 8 yrs and still hurting i guess im ok.
i have years of it to look forward to then!!

morningpaper · 14/02/2006 21:17

ripped to shreds here

actually it was worse because I didn't have all the drugs the second time, and so I didn't get stiched up because I was too sacred of the pain

if you rip, get it stitched

ShaysMummy · 14/02/2006 21:18

something else i want to know- bear with me ladies!!

do you think size of baby is a factor? ds1 was 9lb9 and one week early.
do babies tend to get bigger the more you have?
if they do, in general, i dont think i'll escape a tear 2nd time round?

laurenhannah · 14/02/2006 21:18

Just a small graze with DD2 who was over 2 pounds heavier than DD1. First birth was a nightmare with forceps delivery and loads of stitches etc.Second delivery went really smoothly.

Miaou · 14/02/2006 21:19

Shaysmummy, I was stitched up by the doctor after my epis. and he hurried it. When I was stitched after my tear with dd2 the midwife did it. Dh watched both times (in gory fascination ) and said the midwife did a far more careful job and obviously took pride in her work! 7 months is not a long time to let it heal up - it could improve over time, partic. if you had a midwife stitch you up (they tend to be better at it!)

QE2 · 14/02/2006 21:20

I think the tearing is more to do with how controlled (or not) the pushing stage is tbh. This was definitely true for me anyway. With my 1st I had a small episiotomy. With my 2nd I was very, very sick with the pethidine, so I was puking at the asame time as trying to push (really not a good combination, trust me!). Combined with no.2 being 10lb made for a very bad tear.

I have had 5 and torn with every one of them (except the 1st) and insisted that a doctor do the stitching afterwards and not a novice. Good job done each time and I can still sneeze without pissing myself!

Piffle · 14/02/2006 21:20

as soon as you feel the head crown, pant pant pant breathe pant breathe pant and breathe the head out
Worked both times for me, no tears, bloody good midwifery too

ShaysMummy · 14/02/2006 21:21

the midwife was very caring, she even sprayed it with something to numb it before she put the injections in!- bless her!

she took about forty minutes over it and was joking about my sex life being in her hands!!

so i guess it is normal to still feel a bit 'funny' down there now and again?

Calista · 14/02/2006 21:23

2nd degree tear with ds1 and very painful afterwards for a few days.

Just slight graze with ds2, and wasn't sore at all, although it was only 17 months later! He came out a lot easier and quicker as I just went with what my instincts were telling me at the time and felt a great urge to push. With ds1 they really encouraged me to push till he was born as I wasn't feeling the urge despite being fully dilated.

Ds2 was nearly out before the midwife decided I might be telling the truth about needing to push. She lifted the sheet to see his head emerging!

So no.2 a lot easier for me.

LipstickMum · 14/02/2006 21:23

No

ShaysMummy · 14/02/2006 21:24

thats bloody good going QE2!!

Angeliz · 14/02/2006 21:24

I tore with dd2 but had a very quick second stage too and she just really came fast.
I think i healed quicker with the episiotomy tbh!
