Were you wearing your glasses when you gave birth?

I was just reading something about this on another thread.

I really can't remember. I'm pretty sure I wasn't with ds2 cos I vaguely remember whipping them off and shoving them at dp. I think I must have been with ds1 cos I can still remember the first time I ever set eyes on him (the first bit of him I ever saw were his testicles!)

And what else were you wearing? A lot of people posted on the other thread that they were in their all togethers. But when did you get the chance to strip off?

wore my contact lenses as cant see a thing without them and wont be seen in public with glasses on yet was quite happy to wear attractive hospital gown they insisted i wore somehow managed to lose one sock!

JonesTheSteam · 21/01/2006 20:31

Do you know, I can't remember whether I wore my glasses - probably did, as I'm pretty sure I wasn't wearing my contact lenses!!! And I'm as blind as a bat without them.

Also wore a long-sleeved T-shirt borrowed off DH (a Cardiff University one - very long!)

The conductor of my orchestra wore one to conduct the next rehearsal I attended after giving birth (about 3 months later!) - It did make me snigger, and I so wanted to tell him 'I gave birth in a T-shirt just like that!'

(Probably wouldn't have gone down well!!!!)

SorenLorensen · 21/01/2006 20:40

Also - I can't hear properly without my glasses on. That will sound mad to those with 20-20 vision but I bet the short-sighted amongst us will know what I mean.

JonesTheSteam, are you new or a name-changer (I've seen your name around for a while now but not figured it out)? I went to Cardiff University too.

Clayhead · 21/01/2006 20:41

I can remember handing them to dh so I guess not!

JonesTheSteam · 21/01/2006 20:44

SL - Been here a while (lurking about 2 years, posting about 8 months) - only changed my name at Christmas!!

I left in '93 - would you have been there about the same time?

SorenLorensen · 21/01/2006 20:47

I graduated in 91 - would that have been your 1st year or did you do a longer course? I stayed another year working and lived with dh (well, not dh then!) as he had another year to go.

motherinferior · 21/01/2006 20:48

[I love it when this happens]

SorenLorensen · 21/01/2006 20:51

Well, the last time this happened it turned out that the person I was talking to moved in all the same circles as me at University (though I didn't know her) and it got a bit hairy for a while as I had known her ex-dh (though not in the Biblical sense, thankfully!)

SorenLorensen · 21/01/2006 20:52

Got to eat now but we shall continue this another time, JtheS

zippy539 · 21/01/2006 20:56

Soren - I know what you mean, I am totally deaf without my specs.

I can't remember if I wore them giving birth but they were two c-sections so I imagine I would been told 'no lenses' at some stage and, being the obedient sort, would have obeyed!

pepperrabbit · 21/01/2006 20:56

oooh, they took my glasses away (pethidine did very odd things to me!) and then I had to ask if DS was a boy or a girl cos I REALLY couldn't see!
Might sticky tape them to my head this time - I'm sure they thought I was exceptionally stupid not being able to tell.....

Clary · 21/01/2006 21:03

Yet another bizarrely fascinating MN thread.

I normally wear contacts but all 3 of mine started off when I didn't have em in (ie in the evening or in the middle of the night lol) so I put my glasses on for ease.

Not sure if I wore them at point of delivery with all - I quite clearly recall being in the throes of labour with one baby ( can't recall which) and saying to DH "Take my glasses off" (I was all hot and sweaty so think it was DS1, born in the middle of a summer day)- but I was so gone into it all (2nd stage) that he literally couldn't understand me! As if I was speaking in tongues lol!
(Luckily the midwife got it and told him what to do)

maewest · 21/01/2006 21:08

really interesting thread - just another one of those things that I've been wondering about, and its on MN. I'm fairly shortsighted (specs on first thing in the am) and pg with my first. Don't like the idea of not being able to see clearly, esp if I'm in an unfamilar place. and the hearing thing is definitely true

edam · 21/01/2006 21:08

Can't remember about the glasses but they are always on unless I'm asleep so think I may have been wearing them. Like Zippy and Soren, can't function without them. Although I was on another planet at the time anyway...

I seem to have got changed into a delightful (not) maternity nightie at some point. God knows why but it must have been on when I delivered as it got covered in blood. My sisters, bless them, took it home and washed it for me! I hadn't the heart to tell them I was more than happy for it to be chucked out.

I imagine I kept the nightie on because both my sisters were there throughout (as well as dh). Although God knows why, because I'm sure they saw everything anyway (well, one of them fainted and that's pretty conclusive evidence, isn't it?).

Nemo1977 · 21/01/2006 21:12

I did have my glasses on for giving birth to both DD and DS

Jasnem · 21/01/2006 21:15

So glad other people can't hear without glasses, it's something that's always caused people to think I'm strange...

sweetkitty · 21/01/2006 21:15

I have had laser eye surgery so didn't wear specs or CLs.

I literally pulled off my jeans and pants and gave birth, I had on a lovely pink DKNY t-shirt bought in NY a few months earlier and I still wear it now (well not right now) didn't get messy I seem to recall.

This time I would wear an astronaut suit if it meant this baby would make an appearance!

moondog · 21/01/2006 21:16

I wore full make up,pearl earrings and a very nifty little merino wool two piece.

JonesTheSteam · 21/01/2006 21:16

SL - 91' was my first year - did Music and Welsh - lived in Traherne (which no longer exists, sob!) for the first year.

I did Music and Welsh. Sang in the choir (with Hausfrau ). And eventually played in the orchestra a little.

JonesTheSteam · 21/01/2006 21:18

Going to watch a DVD with DH now, SL - will watch this thread and may hunt you out for further investigation

Bye!!!!!!!1

Oooh yes, let's!

InternationalGirl · 22/01/2006 09:19

I can hardly see without glasses or contacts so I wear disposable contact lenses. One of the first things I will make sure of is that I have a pair of contacts in when I start laboring. I absolutely loathe my glasses - find they really affect my peripheral vision (but better than nothing if I have run out of contacts). I will also be taking an extra pair or two to the hospital in case any of them go missing or have to be taken out - small price to pay for being able to see my baby right away. I will put it on my birth plan that I plan to be wearing my contacts so if there is an emergency and they feel the contacts need to come out at least they will know.

Re clothing: I think I wore a t-shirt type nightie for the first two births. This time I have an extremely large tank top type of shirt I plan to wear (short enough to not be in the way when it comes to access but long enough not to feel totally exposed if the room ends up with a few unfamiliar people in it). They were both hospital births as I think this one probably will be - of course, if I was birthing at home I would probably just go bare as the day I was born.

Hazellnut · 22/01/2006 15:15

wore contact lenses until they decided to wheel me off to theatre - although the anaesthetist was happy for me to continue wearing them during the c-s, the midwife pointed out that it was ealry hours of morning, I might not feel my best after it and therefore might not want to worry about taking them out so I swapped for glasses. Otherwise, wouldn't have been able to see a thing let alone dd !!

Highlander · 22/01/2006 15:55

I felt like wearing dark glasses it was sooooo damn early in the morning
