Were you wearing your glasses when you gave birth?

I was just reading something about this on another thread.

I really can't remember. I'm pretty sure I wasn't with ds2 cos I vaguely remember whipping them off and shoving them at dp. I think I must have been with ds1 cos I can still remember the first time I ever set eyes on him (the first bit of him I ever saw were his testicles!)

And what else were you wearing? A lot of people posted on the other thread that they were in their all togethers. But when did you get the chance to strip off?

Yes. And NHS Gown.

wheresmyfroggy · 21/01/2006 18:57

I was wearing a navy blue mothercare nightie [same one for both births actually. Really didn't want to be in the buff as i felt secure in my nightie.

fisil · 21/01/2006 18:57

wmf, you're a man.

i was in my nighty with dd1 and starkers with dd2.... if the MW hadnt helped me out of my clothes with dd2 i would have given birth in my long black skirt and vest top!

bobbybobbobbingalong · 21/01/2006 19:04

Totally naked, even glasses.

fisil · 21/01/2006 19:05

aw lockets, I wish you hadn't told me that. I was quite entertained by the thought of wmf prancing around the room in a nightie while you laboured away!

I was wearing my glasses - can't see a thing without them, and being able to tell your dh from your midwife is a pretty useful thing.

During labour I was wearing a scruffy old t-shirt, which was changed for a hospital gown when I went for the emergency c-section. There was no way I was taking my glasses off even then; I wouldn't have been able to see dd when she was born.

Pixiefish · 21/01/2006 19:06

yes- wore glasses. Had on a short nightie when i gave birth that ended up around my waist during the proceedings- no dignity here lol

The thing about glasses is that I feel very vulnerable without them; I could never wear contact lenses because I use my specs to hide behind. It would have completely freaked me out to have to remove them to give birth.

Tiggerish · 21/01/2006 19:09

for ds I was wearing an old shirt of dh's. but dd was in a bit of a hurry and I was fully dressed (with specs!) with knickers round my knees!!

I can't even talk on the phone without my glasses on, so I've no idea how I managed to with ds2.

With ds1 I was throwing up a lot, and I just cannot throw up with my glasses on!

Maybe a new thread coming on about bizarre glasses on or off rules!

I read that comment - and it annoyed me a bit, as if suggesting that wearing your glasses was a bit silly and pointless for giving birth, akin to wearing a full length nightie.... Well yes, I did wear my glasses. I'm virtually blind without them and wanted to be able to see what was going on, and I wanted to see my baby, and my dh etc etc My first reaction was, well would you also think it odd for someone with partial hearing to keep wearing their hearing aid...no, of course you wouldn't

I also wore thick bed socks as was advised at ante-natal classes that your feet can get nippy during labour (???). They got very mucky (but my glasses survived without even a smudge).

I'm sure the midwives have seen it all before, and plenty more besides

SorenLorensen · 21/01/2006 19:30

I wore my glasses when I had ds1 - I'd already spent a night in hospital (pre-eclampsia) and was induced so I had time to prepare.

I had my contacts in for ds2 though - no time to take them out, barely had time to get my nightie on and my knickers off

I couldn't have gone without - I'm blind as a bat without them and it would have panicked me not being able to see clearly.

I wore the same nightshirt for both births - my Mum took it home after I gave birth to ds1 in it and she managed to get it clean (I probably would have chucked it).

I also wore my bra both times - even though each time the MW tried to persuade me I'd be more comfortable without. I did not want my boobs flopping about all over thankyou very much

I'm another one who wears her glasses to go to the loo in the dark. I can't see my own toes without them.
Funnily, though, the only time I have been comfortable without them was when giving birth. It added to the spaced out feeling I got from the gas and air, as at the end I was definitely in my own world and unaware of my surroundings.
I know DD1 was delivered onto my tummy so I must also have been naked (but may weel have had socks on).

intergalacticwalrus · 21/01/2006 20:03

I don't think I wore mine. All I remember wearing was a pajama top which was undone and hiding very little. I walked from the labour ward to delivery suite dressed like this, which involves a walk across a busy corridor. I didn't care to be honest, as my dignity was well and truly gone by then.

In fact, I can't even remember having the with me! Mind you, I packed everything in my suitcase, and realised I had forgotten blooody nappies about 30 minutes after DS was born. I'm a dozy bint sometimes!

alicemama · 21/01/2006 20:08

kept my glasses on with both my daughters and would have been lost without them.... mind you with dd2 the only thing I managed to take off was my coat..

Ellbell · 21/01/2006 20:17

As I said on the other thread, glasses are a must for me. I'm like Hausfrau... I wore contact lenses for a while, but had to have my glasses with me at all times in case I lost one.

Dd1 was a cs, so wore a delightful hospital gown.

With dd2 wore an old grey t-shirt. No idea why I put it on. Had been in bath till I felt need to push. Come to think of it, someone else (dh/midwife) may have put it on me, as I was a bit out of it at that point. It was definitely not re-usable afterwards. It went straight in the bin!
