Ah, but if you get it as a suppository, it helps reduce the constipation.

And you don't feel it at all, as they put it in while you're numb.

Suppositories are a bit gross, to think about, but it's a really good drug delivery method. And less gross than a needle (but then, I'm needle-phobic).

uwila · 04/01/2006 18:00

Uh... are you sure about the constipation. I've never heard that before. And even if it is true, think I'd go with the apples or possibly metamucil (sp?).

You can cut me open, and rummage round in my uterus... but get your fingers way from my bum!

NotQuiteCockney · 04/01/2006 18:02

Yeah, I'm sure about the constipation - the suppository consists mostly of glycerine, which clears constipation very quickly. I had my section at 6am, had a poo that day. (Epidurals tend to lower gut motility. I'm twitchy about all this because my dad ended up with a colostomy after a knee op, so I worry that I'm more susceptible to the gut problems associated with anaesthetic.)

uwila · 04/01/2006 18:09

Right, well I guess I've just learned something new. But I still wouldn't let them do it... yuck.

Oh well, we're getting off track here. Good luck, Bigbaubleyes!!! Bet you can't wait to see your little Lewis. Make your Dh talk to you the whole time because the rummaging around in your belly is rather weird. Not painfull, just weird.

NotQuiteCockney · 04/01/2006 18:25

Someone described it as "feeling like someone doing washing up in your stomach". Which isn't very useful, unless you've had someone do washing up in your stomach ... but it really does feel like that.

chatee · 04/01/2006 18:33

remember to look in the theatre lights above you and you can see the op and baby being delivered....wonderful experience(well i enjoyed seeing the birth of ds)

Arabica · 04/01/2006 18:43

I would also recommend the arnica--I walked to the loo 10 hrs after my op with no probs whatsoever and had no pain from scar.
However, I wish I had known that breastfeeding can be a bit tricky after a section. If you find it hard to get baby to latch DO NOT blame yourself or feel inadequate as I did. It's normal and don't let yourself be bullied or feel criticised/inadequate--try and get someone to help you.
And good luck, would also recommend personal stereo and headphones if your ward is as noisy as the one I was on! Got free side room though when they (wrongly) thought DS had jaundice and thought he'd need a sun-bed.

Milge · 04/01/2006 18:50

The pain relief will be codeine/morphine based, which caused me terrible consitpation - which is not a good combination after abdominal surgery. Take your favourite fruit in with you to help get things moving, plus lots of fruit juice.
If you have a triangular V pillow, it will be a godsend. Hospital pillows are instruments of torture. Your own duvet would be nice too.
Pepper mint tea is good at calming the stomach down, also can help with any trapped wind.
Get up and about as soon as possible. moving around will help a lot.
Forget your pride and take the suppository .
Good luck, I was pooping myself before mine, but it was fine.

kikireindee · 04/01/2006 18:51

How very exciting! I had a planned cs with my breech ds. It feels very weird to know you'll actually have a baby tomorrow doesn't it?
Agree with big knickers, arnica, nice food and drinks for afterwards (Cream Egg mcFlurry smuggled in by my sister). Morphine made me throw up my much longed for cup of tea. You will go a long time with no food and drink - I wasn't allowed anything to eat from 6.30am until cs at 2.00pm. They don't let you wear your contact lenses and they don't let you wear any make-up. Have no idea why, but that has a serious impact on the post-delivery photos!
The other thing is the terrible wind you suffer afterwards. A very lovely midwife warned me in advance and advised me to ask for peppermint oil when they came round with the drugs trolley and that helped a bit. You will be v.sore for the first few days but will get better very quickly.

All the very best!

bigbaubleeyes · 04/01/2006 19:56

What great advice from many of you - have updated my checklist accordingly and briefed DH!!! Oh my - been and dashed out to Mothercare and bought two more nightshirts - no seems next to bump - have four for the week.

Called in Sainsbury's on way home bought a stack of gossipy cheap mags and lots of fruit, muselie bars (already had this stuff but stocked up more for longer stay)

I have now dug out CD's and DVD players for longer stay and wedding photos.

Have been taking Arnica but I think I need to take more. And thanks to who said about Cranberry makes sense after they plug up your plumbing got three cartons!

Best of all treated myself to fresh raspberries and some lovely cooked ham for supper. (Scared to eat anything watching McKiefs detox program lastnite!)

I will check thread again before I go to sleep and do my last checks on bags (again!!) and put any extras on list for DH.

We will get up for the THIRD MORNING IN A ROW and hope they keep us there and we have the blessed CS. I should have my little boy by 11am tomorrow. No more suprises I hope i.e that he's a girl that really would be the cherry onthe cake!!!!!

MrsBoo · 04/01/2006 20:06

good luck for tomorrow. I had planned section with my DD 2 years ago - the whole experience was fantastic. With your own room, you'll have plently of peace and quiet. Don't wait for the pain relief to wear off, before you need it!
Repeat big pants, that avoid the scarline.
All the very best.

mawbroon · 04/01/2006 20:11

Good luck bigbaubleeyes. I had an elective 10 and a bit weeks ago for my DS who was breech. It's not as bad as you think. Others have already covered what I would advise - take all the painkillers going, even if you are not feeling any pain. When you get home, you will have a mountain of painkillers to take, and all at different times. Get someone else to take care of dishing them out to you - my DH made a little chart to keep himself right and it was a few days before I could begin to even figure out what to take and when.

Another thing that I found hard was that during the first 24 hours, I had to buzz the midwife to lift my baby for me if he was crying. I didn't know that you were allowed the baby in the bed with you overnight. If I was doing it again, I would just keep the baby in the bed with me.

I spent 3 nights in hospital, but there was another woman who was having her second baby by cs and she was only in for 2 nights, so I suppose it depends on the individual.

Best of luck for tomorrow and enjoy your wee one when he/she arrives.

Kittypickle · 04/01/2006 20:13

Don't know if anyone has said it already but I found one of those flight masks for over your eyes and a set of ear plugs essential for getting a bit of sleep. Good luck tomorrow.

zippy539 · 04/01/2006 20:33

Second kittypickle - take anything which will help you sleep (pillows, masks, ear plugs, ipod..). Between your own excitement and the racket in the hospital (even in a room) you'll need all the help you can get in order to get some kip. I always think it's weird that no MW ever suggests a connection between the day three baby blues, and three days of sleep deprivation in a noisy hospital. I defy anyone, hormonal or not, not to be demented after three days of zero kip.

Have a fabulous time, and look forward to seeing your birth annoucement.

zephyrcat · 04/01/2006 20:36

Go and get a good long nights sleep!! Have they given you a tablet to take at about 6am to neutralise your stomach acids? I had that with my elective so after being up that early and all the nervous energy and excitement it really takes it out of you!! I wanted to stay awake all day to be with ds though

They will more than likely tell you that you have to get up the next morning and go have a shower, take the dressing off the scar etc and get you up and about.

I'm having my 3rd cs in a few months and had forgotten most of this!!!!

Hope you have a wonderful day with your new ds - you'll find it amazingly calm throughout!

polly28 · 04/01/2006 20:40

agree,nice big knickers.

I sent dh to bring some in after my emergency Cs and he brought in thongs. How clueless was he?

take all the pain killers you're prescribed and you'll be fine.

Loved My CS !!

Good Luck and congratulations for tomorrow

NotQuiteCockney · 04/01/2006 20:42

I just borrowed DH's pants. The kind that are like boxers crossed with bike shorts. Lots of coverage for modesty, waist much higher than the scar, and the catheter tube can go out through the flap in the front! And lots of room for the big scary pads.

Aloha · 04/01/2006 20:52

I was only on paracetamol from the day I got home after dd - and that was three days after the op.

The operation is ASTOUNDINGLY quick. No sooner are you numb than someone is showing you your beautiful baby.

MARINAtivityPlay · 04/01/2006 20:58

Good luck Baubleeyes, hope it all goes really well for you.
Agree with all the recommendations for BIG pants (the usual disposable knicks from Mothercare will sit really nicely on your scar ) and as much Arnica as you can scoff before tomorrow.
Hospitals do differ in approach - some don't offer you your choice of music etc in theatre etc, so don't feel let down if that doesn't happen at yours. What you will get everywhere is staff who will do their best to put you at ease - a MW will be with you in the anaesthetics room as well as the anaesthetists and your dp will be looked after by a care assistant during the op (in case he conks out over you or onto equipment apparently )
Oh, and shave the top of your pubes yourself tonight (no need to go the whole hog). I knew I'd need an elective from 23 weeks with ds1 and I forgot to do this beforehand...

mawbroon · 04/01/2006 21:50

oh yes, second the shaving of the pubes. Just the top inch or so is all you need.

hunkermunker · 04/01/2006 21:52

Good luck, BBE! Looking forward to your birth announdement!

sweetkitty · 04/01/2006 21:55

Best of luck for tomorrow x

bigbaubleeyes · 04/01/2006 21:59

Thanks again - I'm off to take my tablet now - I'm leaving shave til morning or will have horrible shaving rash flare up if i do tonite!

I've picked out our wedding CD to listen to in theatre, its not that soppy quite calming n mellow. Have to pick DVD's yet??? I'm sending DH to get v shaped pillow when he gets a chance and (by the way he is spark out on sofa next to me!!!!) fetch papers n stuff.

Response has been great thanks again big knickers are key!!!!!
Its so nice to hear that so many of you had lovely births with CS's.
