no advice, just wanted to wish you well for tomorrow, i posted on your induction thread, hope it all goes well and just think this time tomorrow you'll be holding your new baby!

Kelly1978 · 04/01/2006 16:30

Ooh good luck! I had a section with my breech dts. Pack big knickers, and plenty of food (esp if u bfeeding). Also, magazines for entertainment, as you'll be in for longer now, and won't feel like moving around much to start with.

mazzystar · 04/01/2006 16:32

Had emergency cs after face presentation.
Top tips

  • big big pants to wear afterwards. bigger the better
  • take some arnica (homeopathic remedy) before and after, helps with healing
  • be as relaxed and positive about it all as possible

good luck (and congratulations in advance)

Oh, good luck! I had two sections and they both went really well. I went home after two nights with dd (had op on Tuesday late am, stayed in Tues night, the following day and Wednesday overnight, then went home first thing Thursday morning.
You can still have a birth plan. YOu can take in music to play while your baby is being born, your dh will be with you and you could ask for the baby to be delivered onto your chest and even to actually see your baby being born (they can take down the screen if you would like that). I would personally have liked those things very much.
I was a bit nervous first time, walking into the operating theatre and forced the anaesthetist to tell me jokes! The feeling of the spinal is a bit wierd - you literally can't feel your body. I was fine with this second time, but first time I felt a bit claustrophobic, but took deep breaths and pretended I was relaxing in a yoga class and choosing not to move. After I saw ds and dd though, I couldn't have cared less. Wonderful! I breastfed both of them in recovery, which was a fantastic feeling.
Aside from that, take your painkillers, sitting up is a bit tricky at first and don't rush about - treat yourself gently.

Thanks.... you MN'ers are so quick its warm and reassuring am scared but excited.

I'll add those things to my 'new list'.

During the section, please tell them everything you're feeling. Feel a bit woozy and off? Tell them. Particularly, tell them any weird feelings while the epidural needle is going in.

Take straws, to drink with, afterwards.

northender · 04/01/2006 16:37

Get up and moving asap (although don't overdo it of course!), make sure you take all analgesia offered for the first couple of days and then still make sure you keep the pain well controlled after that and second all the other advice. I had a section after a failed induction with ds then chose a section with dd and it was a great experience.

Aloha · 04/01/2006 16:41

Definitely very big pants!

northender · 04/01/2006 16:41

Didn't post on your induction thread as I had nothing positive to say from my own experience, all I can say now is that a cs in these circumstances is much better than failed induction and then cs. Good luck.

bigbaubleeyes · 04/01/2006 16:51

Oh yes straws havn't thought of those NOTQ and try keeping me queit!!! I've already been politley vocal about the care I have recieved over the last week if it wasn't for two MW's on the delivery unit I wouldn't be feeling so positive - even if a little shocked (little sods been nutting my ribs all this time!)

Accept all drugs - the morphine is great!

Take it easy - I rushed to get back on my feet and probably slowed recovery. Don't rush out of hospital too soon - there's no midwife on call with a push of a buzzer at home.

Aloha · 04/01/2006 17:00

I found everything much easier at home though. Even when I had a three year old at home.

Aloha · 04/01/2006 17:01

Oh, take you own pillow! Hospital pillows are VILE! They are made of PLASTIC and are as soft and yielding as house bricks.

Dophus · 04/01/2006 17:03

Do you have any private healthcare? I was v surprised to find my CS was covered and had the joy of a provate room.

cupcakes · 04/01/2006 17:08

agree with the morphine - it's great. Make sure you have a nightie or plenty of long t-shirts as you won't want anything with waistbands, no matter how loose.

aragon · 04/01/2006 17:09

Oh best of wishes to you all. My son was delivered by caesarean section 3 years ago for the same reason - like you I went in to be induced and " oh - it's breech".

It was fine - I stayed awake and the hospital staff were fab - really made it as personal and special as they could given the circumstances. I was out of bed a day later.

Advice:

Mobilise as quickly as you feel able
Ask for pain relief if you need it and it isn't offered
Remember that it's major surgery - can your Mum or your partner's Mum come and stay to give a couple of weeks help.
Take all offers of help with feeding etc. Ask the staff to spend time with you helping you with breastfeeding (if that's what you're planning - I didn't and I had dreadful problems).

I wish you well - enjoy your beautiful new baby.

honneybunny · 04/01/2006 17:10

My ds1 was diagnosed breech in early labour. We also declined turning and trial of breech vaginal delivery, and had em.section. Agree with all the previous advise, esp v.big knickers! Make sure you don't miss out on any of the pain relief as esp in first days you'll really need it (though I had more pain from catheter and IV drip needle, than of scar initially...). Also ask dh/dp to bring in plenty of drinks (esp cranberry juice as this helps against bladder infection). The suggestion to write a birthplan is a good one: esp. things like cutting cord, that you want baby handed over to you asap, and if you plan to breastfeed, is handy to have written down. IME you can go home after 2-3 days, of everything with you and baby is fine.
Good luck tomorrow!

uwila · 04/01/2006 17:24

I know it was noted, but not emphasized enough:

ARNICA ARNICA ARNICA Take the strongest stuff you can get your hands on and eat it by the bucketload. It's fab stuff. I've had 2 sections. Tokk it for the second one and recovered much faster. Start taking it the night before (if it isn't too late by the time you read this).

Good luck. Have a lovely day.

NotQuiteCockney · 04/01/2006 17:25

Morphine didn't agree with me. Made me puke.

Remember: You can sign yourself out against medical advice. There was a thread today about how long people stay in after sections, and it varies a lot, largely due to varying hospital policies, I think.

PrincessPeaHead · 04/01/2006 17:33

take healthy food, like a bag of apples or something. after a couple of days of hospital stodge you will be dreaming of vitamins. and you'll need a bit of gentle fibre to get yourself going afterwards.

pillows CRUCIAL

uwila · 04/01/2006 17:37

Good advice PPH, didn't think of the healthy fibre. Definitely agree.

How are you? Read a thread about your little one turning up for a while. Is the head still down?

NotQuiteCockney · 04/01/2006 17:40

If you're lucky, they'll give you a diclofenac or cocodamol suppository (I forget which it is) right after the op. You won't feel it going in, as you'll still be numb, but it will get your guts moving afterwards, which will reduce your discomfort.

uwila · 04/01/2006 17:43

You can also ask to have this pain relief some other way... ie NOT a suppository. Whe I read that bit in my section info (at Queen Charlotte) I wrote in my birthplan that I wanted the medicine but not up my bum... no thank you. So they put it in the IV.
