Just wondered, 2nd DC overdue 40+1 and been thinking about birth ALOT! My "official" labour with DD1 was 18 hours from active labour.
Hoping to drastically reduce next one Hmm

DD2 1 hour 40 minutes Grin

ilovedjasondonovan · 17/01/2011 14:28

DD1 - 8 hours start to finish
DD2 - 2.5 hours from first twinge to baby. Far far less painful.

FoundWanting · 17/01/2011 14:30

DS1 36 hours
DD 7 hours
DS2 2 hours

asdx2 · 17/01/2011 14:31

Good thread - I've been wondering the same but also curious as to whether people have experienced any latent stage in 2nd/3rd labours.
DD1 was 26.5 hrs from first twinge but active labour 8 hours and 2nd stage only 35 minutes.

TettyLouBar · 17/01/2011 15:28

Thanks for all of the posts. Its reassuring to see some of the timings reduced so significantly!
I had my first twinge with DD on the wednesday morning but didnt have her until sunday morning!! But midwife said that active labour is the best way to refer to lengths of time, I think 19 hours was from when I was 3-4cm.

I just want the latent phase over asap really. That bit really got to me! My sister in law has had 2 babies, 1st 1 hour 30 mins start to finish, 2nd 40 mins! Makes me sick! Sad

Think this will be the last baby, "hanging up the ovaries" as it were after this one! Smile

Tetty my first (and only so far as only 7 weeks post partum) labour was also 19 hours active labour. Then had 1.5 hrs pushing before failing to progress (ds giant head on the wonk got stuck) and having him evicted by way of forceps.
Never mind the 16 hours of contractions before that, and the days of pre labour the latent phase is horrid. Some people are so lucky they don't go through it.

Am watching this thread with interest as really hopeful that if i ever take the plunge again it will be alot faster

Good luck

MollysChambers · 17/01/2011 16:14

1 - 17 hrs
2 - 2hr 45mins
3 - 12 hrs

fedupwithdeployment · 17/01/2011 16:19

DS1 About 5 days. About 12 hours in hospital. I was knackered. And it was a bit grim with stuck baby, forceps and almost an emergency CS.

DS2 About 3 hours. A LOT better!

TettyLouBar · 17/01/2011 18:05

Lainey1981 I had a very similar birth with DD. 18 hours active labour, Pushed for over an hour, then ventouse, forceps, episiotomy proved successful in the end. But is was a long old slog and really put me off babies.
I think if it wasn't for the fact that this baby was a bit unexpected we might not have planned another! Hmm But having said that I'm so looking forward to having another and excited to be here at the due date!

Mollychambers That 2nd birth sounds more like it! Grin

fedupwithdeployment 5DAYS!!!! Shock

DS1 - 11 hours
DS2 - 4 hrs (induced)
DD - 4.5 hours

Both DS2 and DD also had the second (pushing) stage recorded as 0 minutes, which sounds fab until you add up the time I lost having the resulting double prolapse repaired when DD was 18mths old. Fast is not always good!

TheUnmentioned · 17/01/2011 18:18

both induced but...

ds - 6 hours from going on drip to having him

dd - 9.5 hours from going on drip to having her but I was only having contractions for about 6 hours or so.

They were both thirteen days late.

TheUnmentioned · 17/01/2011 18:19

Oh and dd no pushing stage really - one push and she was out.

TettyLouBar · 17/01/2011 18:20

MrsD That sounds awful, you poor thing. OUCH! I'm not wishing to break any records - just have an easier time that the last time would be nice.
My friend had a similar operation to you due to similar reason - she had a rough time with the post-op recovery. I feel for you Shock

lostinafrica · 17/01/2011 18:25

Bit odd, really:

DD1 - 3 hours (induced at 42 wks)
DD2 - 6 hours (induced at 40 wks)
DS - 7 hours (best experience of the lot!)
DD3 - EMCS

What IS the latent phase?

Ooh ooh ooh OUCH to MrsDTK!

weegiemum · 17/01/2011 18:33

1st - 37 hours, back to back, facial presentation, ventouse delivery, augmentation of labour, ARM, all round nightmare! 4 days early naturally.

2nd - 10 hours from waters breaking in bed at home to delivery. 10 days early naturally. SVD.

3rd - 12 hours from induction at 36+6 due to medical problems to delivery. SVD.

TettyLouBar · 17/01/2011 18:41

lostinafrica It just goes to show that there's no predictable pattern is there?

Latent phase: Sometimes defined as the time when irregular and painful contractions start and continue to build up both in intensity and frequency. This may last from one to anything up to 24 hours, occasionally more, before active labour begins (dilated to approx 3-4 cms) Smile

OP posts:
lostinafrica · 17/01/2011 19:33

Oh, I see, the bit before established labour? 1.5 hours into first labour, midwife examined me, tutting about first-timers as I was not coping - complete turnaround as she realised I was already 10cm dilated! "Get this woman to delivery! Call her husband!!" :o

So, I think I missed the latent bit that time!

homebirthmummy · 17/01/2011 22:32

DD - 40 hours (long and painful prelabour)
DS - 4 hours (from first twinge to baby)

TettyLouBar · 18/01/2011 07:50

lostinafrica that's hilarious, 10cm! On my first two internals, I hadn't budged from 2cm! Sad

OP posts:
msbossy · 18/01/2011 13:24

lostinafrica - you sound like my SIL. MIL caught her DD because the midwife wasn't ready!

gourd · 18/01/2011 14:06

DD - 2.5 hours from first twinge to baby ("pushing stage" was 21 minutes).
I'd made a four hour long "relaxation for labour" playlist for my ipod but only got through about half an hour of it before baby arrived! I had a home water birth. Was 6cm by the time the midwife arrived 45 minutes before the birth, but the pool wasn't ready at that point, as I'd assumed I'd be sitting around for ages before I got to 4cm (when you can get in the pool) so I didn't get in the pool till about half an hour before the birth. The second midwife arrived 15 minutes before the birth, with me already in the pool and active pushing stage in full swing, so only just in time really!

gourd · 18/01/2011 14:13

Also I was lucky not to need any other pain relief except for the warm water in the pool and I didn't tear. Couldn't have asked for a better experience really. I felt very positive about the whole thing from start to finish and afterwards I was so euphoric I didn't feel the bruising/swelling for the first three days! I was even lucky enough to get the same midwife I'd seen all the way through pregnancy, and she then did all the follow-up visits too.

TettyLouBar · 18/01/2011 15:30

gourd that sounds lovely. I dont know why I didnt opt for a water birth this time. I guess I'm to much of a chicken.
Your experience sounds wonderful - I had a rough time with DD but still look back on it positively, I really hope this time is ok Hmm
