Is there a home birth thread on MN?

I've been trying to find a home birth thread on the talk boards but not having any luck. Is anyone else planning for a HB imminently? I am hoping for a home water birth in around 2 weeks with an independent mw and it would be great if anyone else was also in the same position or had recently had a HB.

Hello please can i join

Im 23 weeks now and expecting my first baby in September, and unless there are really serious problems i would like (& will insist on) a home birth. Luckily I live in the sticks, 45 mins + from hospital, and homebirths are very supported here, though of course midwives wont decide if they can reccomend it until later in pregnancy.
I have my birth pool in a box all ready. Smile

Hi ladies, is there room for one more? I'm at 35+4 with my first baby and planning a home birth. So far, so good as I'm a low risk pregnancy and the baby is in the right position (although not yet engaged). I've got the home birth preparation and birth music natal hypnotherapy CDs, have organised TENS hire, and have ordered a birth pool.

Waves back to Mrs PP
I too have natal hypnotherapy CD for home birth.... and on that note off to do my natal hypnotherapy pregnancy relaxation, as not far along enough for birth prep yet! & I got my birth pool in a box, from ebay, including a new sealed liner and all the other stuff for £32 Grin
Hoping to borrow a TENS from my friend!

PerpetualProvocateur · 17/05/2011 16:19

That's quite a bargain nanny!

My birth pool literally just turned up as I was typing (I bought this one: www.nctshop.co.uk/Eco-Birth-Pool-in-a-Box-/productinfo/4302/). Off to play with it!

nannyl · 17/05/2011 17:28

Yes... i couldnt believe my luck.... (got the same as you Smile)
Id bid £80 for it (probably would have gone higher) as it also has the massive non slip floor mat, the air and water pump, the hose and tap connectors, puncture repair kit, all instructions, heat cover everything (except the strainer so will buy a sieve for 50p from wilkos) and even a liner too! I nearly died of shock when i won at only £32

PerpetualProvocateur · 17/05/2011 20:05

Very Envy of your deal! I got all the same kit but paid around £128 with a 15 percent discount.

Will have to use it a couple more times to get my money's worth Grin

Excuse the copy and paste from the May 2011 antenatal thread:

Alice Rachel born last night 7:52pm 7lb 13 oz.
Home birth but v quick so DH actually delivered/caught her then called 999!

I had what I suppose I consider my first contraction at 3:40pm. Painful lower back but ok just to breathe through it and only lasted a few seconds. They came every 20 mins. At 4:30pm I decided I didn't want to collect DS from nursery in case I got another pain when driving or walking so asked DH to fetch him and I took a couple of paracetamol. By 6:30pm they were coming every 7-8 mins but only a few seconds each time. We decided to send DS to a sleepover with friends just in case. Got in the bath. By 7:15pm they were every 5 mins but the midwife on the phone said really until the contractions were lasting 45 secs to a minute and I could feel them in my upper abdomen then I still had a way to go. The next contraction after I put the phone down I felt a "pop" and I guess my waters broke in the bath (and the show came). So hopped out of bath. Put TENS on and DH got our living room ready (fire on, tarpaulin and duvet on floor). I felt the urge to poo but was really worried that I shouldn't push too early. Told DH that I felt I needed the midwife to be there even though the contractions were not long. Then just had to push twice in quick succession and just managed to get onto the covered part of the floor, knelt over the sofa and the head popped out almost immediately followed by the rest of her! I think I went into shock, just remember telling DH to call 999 and then the ambulance call handler on loud speaker telling him what to do. I heard Alice crying but was scared to look round and see her. Within 5 mins or so ambulance crew arrived and then a bit later the midwife. I needed gas and air for the afterpains and to get the placenta out. Only a small tear and no stitches needed. Masses of adrenaline for both DH and me. We collected DS this morning and I'm just filled with love for my family. Alice is feeding really well and looking v content.

spiggy · 19/05/2011 10:33

Congratulations gingerwench, what a fabulous story. Sounds quite like my DD's birth- I found the adrenaline high lasted for weeks! Enjoy your new family cuddles Smile

gingerwench · 19/05/2011 10:43

Thanks - it was strange because I took a while to believe it was the real thing - the contractions were so much shorter and less overwhelming than with DS. Just goes to show how every birth can be so different!

So glad we planned for a homebirth, can't imagine we would have made the hospital in time otherwise and it would have been much scarier if an unplanned homebirth I think.

spiggy · 19/05/2011 11:50

Snap! I honestly didn't think I was in labour with DD after experiencing labour with DS so she did end up being an unplanned hb. And it happened so quickly. This time the mws have agreed to come out when I phone, regardless of length of contraction etc, just in case Grin

I found it relatively easy to get over the shock but DP found it very hard and had nightmares for a while- probably as I was too busy concentrating to take in the situation at the time while DP had to deal with everything (the cord was round DD's neck) so it might be your DH who needs the most time to adjust/talk it through.

Now if you have finished with those nice short labour vibes could I borrow them? (8 days over and counting!)

PerpetualProvocateur · 19/05/2011 12:08

Congratulations gingerwench! Good luck spiggy - hope things get moving soon!

Just had my 36-week GP appointment (at 35+6) today. My baby is in optimal position and 3/5 engaged, so it's looking quite good for our homebirth!

HighFibreDiet · 20/05/2011 11:29

wow gingerwench that's really exciting :) Good luck to spiggy and PerpetualProvocateur

spiggy · 20/05/2011 15:20

DS2 arrived 12:32 this afternoon at home Smile 7lb 15oz. Totally different to hospital birth. 1 examination when mw arrived at 10 and was 7cm. The rest of the time they sat in the background and just let me get on with it. They judged how far along I was by what I was doing so that when I was ready to push they had everything ready. Waters went 2 minutes before delivery- lots of meconium but everything ok. All snuggled up on the sofa now, you really wouldn't guess anything had happened here today!

nannyl · 20/05/2011 15:39

Congratulations Spiggy

Sounds like a wonderful birth. I hope mine is like that!

bemybebe · 20/05/2011 15:40

I am so encouraged by this thread!! I am planning a home birth for my first child due 27th Sept. Yesterday we had the first appointment with the independent MW, how was just fantastic. Spent 2.5 hours with us chatting and taking notes about med history, taking tests, listening to the baby's heart. Very relaxed atmosphere. Much better than rushed 30 mins with our community midwife, who is also a very nice professional, but who is lacking the same resources and time (and also rather anti-HB).

MrsArchchancellorRidcully · 20/05/2011 19:50

Huge congrats spiggy sounds like a dream HB!

And beny I hear so many good things about I'm. I'm just gutted I can't afford one so I'm left to carry on using my energies on fighting the system, specially as I'm a HBAC.

Does anyone have any experience of white coat syndrome? My blood pressure always shoots up in hospital/mw office and so they are very nervous (goes to 150 over 95 or similar). I have a monitor at home and am getting readings of around 127/83 - perfectly normal. How do I convince them its the location of the measurement!

MrsArchchancellorRidcully · 20/05/2011 19:52

i'm = independent mw!

sc2987 · 26/05/2011 00:28

I will add my home birth story. The due date was 22/03/11 but Thamar Linnet (my first and preferably only child!) was born at 37 weeks.

I went to antenatal appointments up to 25 weeks (for the paperwork, e.g. MATB1) but told my midwife I wasn't coming back. I agreed to a consultant appointment. Listened to what both of them had to say and ignored it all and reiterated that I planned to have an unassisted homebirth.

I had several reasons for this - firstly I'm not a sociable person and I don't want extra people in my house (even if they're not in the room) during what could be a stressful time. Also, I believe that in a healthy, well-informed woman, pregnancy and childbirth are normal physiological events. Sex is also risky (e.g. some people die of heart attacks), but nobody calls a nurse for the event. Plus I don't see what it has to do with anyone else; they weren't present for the conception and I didn't want them at the birth! Besides, I live 5 minutes from the MLU/A&E.

I had been doing Optimum Foetal Positioning from 34 weeks, and was fairly confident the baby was LOA (which she was).

My husband split up with me last April (actually before the baby was [accidentally] conceived, so not a clean break to begin with!) but didn't move out till two weeks after she was born. He was in the living room, not actually watching the birth.

My waters broke some time in the early morning of 28/02/11, so I cleaned up and went back to bed. Had a normal morning; nothing else happened until mid-afternoon of that day, when contractions started. I went to meet my husband at the bus station at about 5pm as he'd forgotten his coat that morning and it was cold. The rest of the evening I spent on the computer, including watching the newest episode of One Born Every Minute on 4oD. I found it quite amusing as it was so far from what I was doing!

Mid-late-evening I went into the bathroom to labour, walking around and swinging my hips. I took in an old chair cushion (one that covers the entire chair so fairly large but thin and flexible). At about 22:45 I told my husband that I was having the baby (he hadn't noticed anything, even though I'd been in the bathroom so long!) and to just stay in the living room and not disturb me.

From this point the contractions were more intense so I slept on the cushion (lying on my left side) between them as it was late and I was tired. Then as they became closer and I felt the baby descending I stayed kneeling on the cushion, leaning on the sink.

I didn't push till right at the end - I know this is when they usually advise not pushing, to prevent tearing when crowning, but I felt it was the right thing to do, and I think that was correct (even though I got a 2nd degree tear). Because as soon as her head was out the rest of the body just slid out immediately, and I noticed that the cord had snapped. It was about half the normal length (~25cm) altogether, so it probably had to break (which is why the pushing helped) for her to get out. She was pink from the beginning and the cord didn't leak blood at either side (apparently they seal themselves faster when torn rather than cut) so I wasn't worried about her or myself. She was born about 00:20.

Then she started crying and I called my husband in to meet her. I held her for a while, then we both got washed and my husband cleaned up. While I was in the shower the placenta slid out.

Then we got into bed and she had some colostrum.

I didn't have pain during the birth; I would describe the sensations as discomfort. Somewhat like when you go for a long run and are out of breath with aching muscles.

We had problems feeding as she wasn't good at latching, so I had to express and cup feed for several days once my milk came in. Despite seeing plenty of NHS staff after the birth (midwives, nurses, paediatricians etc) none of them spotted that she was tongue tied, it was only diagnosed by a lactation consultant from La Leche League who I called. So although she was breastfeeding directly after a week, she wasn't very efficient and it was painful for me. We finally got the tongue tie divided at 10 weeks, so she is now much better at eating (although it wasn't stopping her gaining weight)!

congratulations to all the babies arriving safely Smile

I am looking at hiring a birth pool, does anyone have any recommendations?

I have got my birth plan appointment the first week of June so hopefully soon after that my birth pack will arrive and then....
I can't help thinking roll on 37 weeks though Grin

It's been a while so I thought I would catch up quickly. Have had my birth pack delivered last week and my birth plan gone throiugh at the same time. Today was told by BP is slightly high and a MW will come tomorrow to retake it, hopefully all will stay on track.

Am now 38 + 1 so not long to wait although I'm getting impatient now.

fatbottomgirl · 22/06/2011 14:50

twit I love it when the birth pack is delivered makes you feel like it won't be too long now.

I am 34+3 today and got a phone call Monday about low iron levels, started the supplement and I am hoping that this raises them. Fingers crossed it does and I hope that it has no effect on planned homebirth.

Ernie01 · 22/06/2011 22:36

Good luck to all of you with your home births. I just wanted to add a (tiny) cautionary note. I was planning a home birth which ended up as a transfer to hospital and a section. It was all fine and definitely worth trying to do it at home as I had a much more positive experience during labour (was 10cm dilated by the time I had section as it turned out to be a face-brow presentation which was obviously not detectable till very late stage). Midwives were brilliant and let me stay at home for as long as they felt was safe, then rang ahead and by the time I arrived at hosp there was an anaesthetist waiting for me and the section happened v. smoothly. But there was another Mum on the post-natal ward who had been so committed to the home birth idea that she had refused to transfer even on advice of the midwives. The outcome was not good for her baby. In the end the only point of giving birth is to have a healthy baby and a healthy mum and the midwives are there to support you but they are also there to make medical judgments if need be.
