Can I just ask if anyone has a clue what we have got, please.

She looks like a cuckoo maran BUT she has a big old fringe on top of her head, and she lays green eggs (apparently)

Is she a variety of maran or......something else entirely?

a cream legbar? here most jealous, I want one.

Flighttattendant · 09/07/2010 10:15

Well, I don't think she is as her colouring is grey speckledy, just like a slightly pale cuckoo maran.

There's no cream - not yet anyway, she is only about 18wks.

I might ask the farmer - he should know!!

Is it a aracauna www.omlet.co.uk/breeds/breeds.php?breed_type=Chickens&breed=Araucana We have 2 lavenders they are lovely docile chickens and lay blue/green eggs

somebodysfool · 09/07/2010 10:42

tiny.cc/1yxou previous link did not work

Flighttattendant · 09/07/2010 12:15

Ah, thankyou - well, I was going to say yes, but the farmer has just been round and he said she is a legbar crossed with a maran!
So mystery solved.

I will try and get pics in a bit and put them up.

Right, here are a few - not great shots as the wire gets in the way! But you get the idea.

Mad chooks

They're gorgeous Flight ... am I right in counting 6? Your run looks fabulous - well done!

Flighttattendant · 12/07/2010 06:16

Thanks Millie...I've been wondering how you got on with yours, last time we talked properly you were getting a Maggies House I think? I would love an update on how things are going!

They are lovely, great job on the run too!

Has your Cream Legbar/Maran hybrid started laying yet? From what I understand about 80% of hybrids will lay green/blue eggs, so I have my fingers crossed for you! The Cuckoo Marans is beautiful!

bramblebooks · 12/07/2010 16:29

They are gorgeous - great setup too.

I've a mad legbar, bless her, what a character! I've a columbine who only lays pink eggs and am getting an aracauna (and a blue cochin and a light sussex) in a month's time!

Flighttattendant · 12/07/2010 16:30

Oh great news! Thanks Midori. I think she is around 18 weeks so not quite there yet. In fact since we got our original girlies back in april (?) we have not had a single egg! Only one of them still with us, plus the light Suss is about the same age so you never know.

I don't actually believe in egg-laying hens at the moment I think it might just be a myth.

Bramble - I'm at your selection ! Pink eggs?!

wow!

OP posts:
bramblebooks · 12/07/2010 19:19

Yeah but she had an 80% chance of blue! My speckledy does lovely speckled eggs and I also have a dear little partridge Cochin.

ditavonteesed · 13/07/2010 07:37

Ideal for the perfect looking eggskelter would be, white star for china white eggs, 2 x cream legbar 1 blue layer and one green layer, a speckeldy for the spotty ones, a maran for the really dark brown ones, how cool would that be.

bramblebooks · 13/07/2010 13:36

Gorgeous- would love a whitestar, just don't think my nerves would take it (especially with legbars already!)
