Selling eggs?

I was just wondering - if you have a glut of eggs are you able to just sell them, or are there all sorts of health and safety precautions that you need to take first?

If we're lucky to have more eggs than we need (haha I bet I'll end up with some non-layers) then I'd like to advertise them for sale in our village, however I worry that there's things that I need to worry about e.g. infected eggs. Am I right to worry?

I think you stopped being able to sell them when we had a salmonella outbreak in the 80s.
Otherwise people could feed their chickens animal products and stuff would get into the food chain.
Don't think it's policed though, but might be best to stick to friends/neighbours rather than sticking a sign on the gate.

we sell at the farm gate. no strict policies unless you have over 50 hens or want to grade your eggs.
we do tell people to make sure they refrigerate and consume within 3 weeks of purchase.
also you are not supposed to wash pooey eggs as this is considered 'processing' for which you would need special checks etc.
you also need to use brand new egg boxes if you are selling in the box (or we get round that by encouraging people to recycle their own)

Thanks ouch. That's what I potentially had in mind - putting a sign up outside the house (we live in a village) and see if anyone's interested.

I sell loads of eggs, take extras to work or playgroup, don't think it matters as long as not enough to be a business.
