A good friend of mine is keen to start keeping chickens in her garden. I'd like to get her a book about it for her birthday. Can anyone recommend one?

Hen and the art of chicken maintenance! Funny and informative.
Hens in the garden eggs in the kitchen, charlotte popescu. Info on chicken keeping in the first half, recipes in the second half.
Ultimately, any book will do the job, there is only so much info about chicken keeping, they all say much the same! But these 2 were the ones I liked.x

this book is simple and basic, and combined with a knowledgeable friend, has seen us well.

the one i started with is called "choosing and keeping chickens" by Chris Graham
ISBN 9780600614388 (£12.99).
it's got loads of lovely pictures of chickens you may wish to purchase too!
loads of good advice for the novice.

Alongside the book, recommend that she joins a place called The Poultry Garden - it has a forum and is an excellent source of information and advice - particularly about health. I haven't practised doing here links yet, but just tell her to put - the 'poultry garden forum' into the google search box and up it will come.

One thing that I didn't realise when I first got chickens is how important health maintenance is and it is vitally important to deworm and delouse regularly. Keep everything as clean as you can too. I lost two hens due to them being infested when I got them from the breeder and it was a huge shock.
