Hens eating eggs

Yesterday one of our hens laid an egg in their run rather than in the nesting box. Before we could stop them they all broke it and ate it.

Any advice on how to stop this happening again?

Hopefully it won't happen again. Mine have occassionaly done this but leave eggs in the nest box alone. Hopefully yours wll make it to the nestbox next time.

Hopefully its a one off. If not, the experienced poultry people I know would recommend blowing an egg and filling it with mustard. Either that, or invest in 'roll away' nestboxes, so that the hen can't get to the eggs.

one of mine ate eggs for a while so I tried mustard but unfortunately she enjoyed it (!) so then got some pot eggs and put one in each nest box. luckily it worked and we are back to 10 or so eggs today. phew!
if my elderly girl lays one of her papery thin eggs they still go for that as it splats anyway
