I've discovered mine like tomato. They eat the burst ones I chuck out of the greenhouse.

grapes, they go mental for grAPes, the manky ones that I would chuck out, they mob me.

MIne love raisins, corn on the cob as well as just frozen corn (defrosted or not they don't seem to mind!) grapes are a particular favourite, crusts of bread, cherry tomatoes - they're not too fussy really!!!

meltedmarsbars · 16/09/2009 12:12

Mice, my mother reports a mouse running across her hen run. It didn't reach the other side

mice · 16/09/2009 12:14

No!!! My chickens wouldn't touch mice ....I don't think... I shall have a word with them and tell them cute furry mice are completely off limits!

BroodyChook · 16/09/2009 12:14

Meal worms, toast crusts, porridge, corn on the cob, grapes, raisins and shreddies.

meltedmarsbars · 16/09/2009 12:15

Mine eat anything alive that they can catch: moths, flies, frogs...

Left over cooked spaghetti ! Watch those girls run !!

Janus · 16/09/2009 21:57

We had an absolute overrun of caterpillars in our veg patch this year (on brocolli etc) and my girls took great pleasure in picking of loads of them and then feeding them to the chickens who LOVED THEM!
Mostly mine get bread and maybe leftover waffles or pancakes but I think they miss the caterpillars!

meltedmarsbars · 17/09/2009 13:54

Ours won't eat cabbage caterpillars

I have to take what little pleasure I can in killing the blighters (catepillars not hens)

One of mine LOVES spiders, my DCs catch big fat ones and she gets all excited as soon as they go near the run! They'll eat raisins, like meal worms but don't seem keen on much else yet - they are ex-batts though so its all new to them!

OrmIrian · 17/09/2009 16:19

Have no hens nor room for them

But I remember that my parents' chucks used to love cooked pasta.

Dazmum · 17/09/2009 16:21

Ours jump in the air for grapes! They also like tinned sweetcorn, peas and rice.

notsofarnow · 26/09/2009 08:40

strawberries any that are going slightly squidgy they love and just about anything else

meltedmarsbars · 27/09/2009 10:12

Dazmum, I thought jumping was bad for egg-laying?

Ours keep breaking into the greenhouse (not literally, fortunately ) to get the tomatoes! Little buggers.

They're also ver partial to pretty much any scraps but especially raisins, worms, and spaghetti bolognaise.

LittleB · 28/09/2009 12:34

A couple of mine keep trying to raid the greenhouse for the toamatoes too, I give them a few but don't let them help themselves! They also love sweetcorn, grapes and rice. They go mad for snails and slugs too - we were moving pots around the garden yesterday and must have found about 40 for them. They will only eat the green caterpillars from the cabbages - not interested in the cabbage white caterpillars- fussy birds!

meltedmarsbars · 28/09/2009 12:38

Daisymoo you have worms amongst your dinner scraps?

OP posts:
bramblebooks · 28/09/2009 12:52

grapes and cakes and noodles.

meltedmarsbars · 30/09/2009 11:41

And sweetcorn cobs once we've eaten them

cooked pasta is our chickens and ducks favourite thing. If its cold and I am feeling particularly good I cook them warm porridge (with water) they will beg for pretty much anything 2 of them were quite embarrassing at bbq's in the summer. They would beg at all our guests feet and eat anything on offer including breadsticks with sour cream and chive dip! Occeasionally give them sardines or pilchards in oil too as its meant to be good for them. Other than than they hoover up most scraps we offer!

TrinityReindeer · 18/12/2009 15:48

a tin of sweet corn or smash (would you believe it) were my hens absolute fave

RacingSnake · 18/12/2009 19:33

I read somewhere that the only birds that eat cabbage white caterpillars are cuckoos. That's why they are brightly coloured and don't need to hide (caterpillars, not cuckoos).
