Are caterpillars poisonous to chickens?

I am a first-timer hopefully getting my first hens on Wednesday (some ex-batts from a rescue charity in Lancashire). Having just returned from a long weekend away to find my beloved and carefully-nurtured purple sprouting broccoli utterly destroyed by a troupe of evil cabbage white caterpillars, I have gathered them up (well, OK, squealed in horror and had DH gather them up at any rate) and plan to save the offending little blighters as a welcome present for the girls. Can anyone tell me whether a) they're ok to give to them i.e. not poisonous or anything, and b) they're likely to want them?

Many thanks!

Mine eat them and come to no harm!
