Thats exciting - i'm researching my chickens at the mo, getting them in march hopefully - I'm sure we'll probably do the same with our first egg.

NutterlyUts · 11/01/2009 14:41

congratulations !! its no less exciting when you get your 10th egg, 50th etc!

MarmadukeScarlet · 11/01/2009 14:57

How exciting, well done chook!

I sigh wistfully everyday and my chooks have left me little gifts. Mine lay all diff colours so I marvel at the beauty of them each time. I have, however, stopped weighing each one and now only weigh really huge or small ones.

vjg13 · 11/01/2009 15:30

Very exciting! I'm still thrilled each day when there are 2 and a bit annoyed if they have a day off!!

Riven I have a white layer and 2 blue layers, it is bliss!

SAdly the blue layers are not prolific, so it makes each one more special - they have not been in lay for a couple of months now. My white is laying most days still.

I have 9 chooks and am getting 3-6 eggs per day. My best layer (a 3 yr old marran cuckoo) has just moulted, so has been off lay for 4 weeks and am looking forward to her huge eggs again for dd's boiled egg in the morning.

Fabbo! I'm only a week into chicken keeping and my adopted chooks (year old) have been laying almost every day They are busy doing ground clearance in the veggie garden at the moment - I've yet to work out how I'm going to grow veggies in it with them around!

I love it when the egg is so fresh it's still warm.

We had loads of bokking last week and a monster egg from the ginger nut ranger. Miss pepper pot lays very light brown eggs which are almost white. Marmaduke, are your marran eggs dark brown?

Doodle2U · 11/01/2009 19:00

Ah, you never forget your first egg!

TheInnocentBystander · 11/01/2009 19:03

Congratulations! I remember our first one too, its great isn't it.

We had a double yolker yesterday. The egg was ENORMOUS!! Poor old chook that laid it looked a bit startled afterwards poor girl.

bramblebooks · 12/01/2009 11:21

Bet she made some great laying noises, innocent!

I have found out why I thought the ginger ranger hadn't laid. She'd used the far back of the eglu whilst her partner in crime was in the nest box, bless her. Good job I looked in to give the roosting bars a scrub!

currently enjoying edna and obi hen fairy cakes

TheInnocentBystander · 12/01/2009 17:44

bramblebooks - it was funny because we were commenting how noisy the chooks were being that morning. There was lots of squawking going on and the poor girl was sat in the nest box for ages. When she came out she was talking to the other chooks about it and I'm sure she was walking strangely!

I have honestly never seen such a huge egg! It was double the size of a normal one and had two pointy ends, like a huge bullet. I was scared to crack it open incase there was some kind of living alien/creature inside.

My brothers wife hatched some eggs and one of them produced an egg for her recently. I asked if they'd eaten it and my brother said no because it cost £800!!! This is how much they'd spent to set it all up. He said if I wanted a boiled egg off him it would cost me £850!!

Saint2shoes · 12/01/2009 17:56

well done op

sep1712 · 12/01/2009 22:04

I had another egg today!!!!
Enjoyed my fresh egg poached with grilled bacon and grilled tomato!! yummy!!!
The kids weren't very happy that i'd eaten it whilst they where out any they never got any. I promised i'd save the next one but i might be tempted to break that promise.
Does anyone know how to make curried egg?
