my girls are living on a bed of woodchip as was recommended when we got them. after all this rain the poor things are living in a mud bath. have tried raking it around but to no avail. its the first time i have had chickens and i am not sure what to do for the best! do chickens get foot rot? Is there anything i can do to make it better for them?

Can't help, but we are having exactly the same problem. Havn't got the luxury of a large garden, so mine have to stay in one place. We have been using straw on the pen floor, which was fine until all the rain, now it is just a soggy mud bath.

I have 10 youngsters in a poultry-netted pen which is a mud bath. I've laid down some wooden pallets/boards in front of the house so they don't have to stand in the mud if they don't want to. But they are anyway. [rolls eyes at chicken stupidity]

I am going to try and get hold of some of that corrugated plastic sheeting to make a roof for the pen I think.

I have a cover on my run but it is still a mus bath, just scooped the worst of it out today, i think you have to acknowledge that they are essentially far anaimals and not to adverse to a bit of mud.

mine are totally free range, and ive now got them living in a huge palace shed with lots of space to hang out in bad weather... but they still hang about forlornly in the rain. and blow about forlornly in the wind.
dozy chickens.
