chicken toe nails - should they be clipped?

noticed mine tonight, they look rather long, should I clip them.

They are never really on hard ground but do get to scratch around on the lawn and in the garden.

Ours are on grass and mud, they constantly scratch about, and have long toe nails! I have no intention of attempting to clip them as they don't seem in any discomfort.

I've never heard of clipping hens toes, only cocks spurs.

I haven't ever clipped our hens toes and they have lived long and happy lives. (Except when the fox intervenes).

My mum used to paint the nails of her chickens in bright red nail polish.

Just because (she was a child at the time).

Ah,that makes more sense - had visions of 50 year old woman pinning chickens down to give them a full manicure.......
