I ahev been trying to forget about my chooks a little so i don't actually explode, now it is only 2 wewks till my eglu comes.
So I am getting 4 chooks, I will get warren and black rock but would also like a couple of different breeds.
Suggestions please, I know you all love looking at pics of chickens (or is that just me).

There was a thread here not so long ago, EB. It was like a wish list of what we'd all buy if we were starting from scratch again.

It's exciting innit! We've had ours since mid May and I love the whole chicken keeping vibe.

Doodle2U · 25/06/2008 16:39

Ha - just re-read the link I gave you and see you've posted on it! That'll teach me to be a bloody 'Know-It-All'!

electricbarbarella · 25/06/2008 17:15

he he I am always lurking on here, i haven't read it for a while though as I have been trying to forget about chickens until it is time.
Now I think I am close enough to get excited again.
May, they laying yet then, what coop you got etc etc etc.

Eglu Cube.

3 x chickens (from Omlet) Nora, Beattie & Dora/Eunice (don't ask!)

2 x laying but the third one is having none of it. Think she may be a duff one!

They have fab personalities though. Never knew chickens could be so entertaining.

DH has some plan to make a more permanent run for them but it's still in the planning stages (in his head!)

I want to get two Silkies but not had much luck finding the right pair yet. Will be on here to crow about them
when I do get them!

What colour eglu, I have ordered an orange one.

Green. Not as easy to move around as I thought it was going to be but otherwise, it's fab.

The guy from Omlet was here for about three quaters of an hour, assembling it. He was very chatty & nice. The girls came out of the back of his van in a pet carrier and the dog couldn't get his nose out of the mesh on the front of the carrier! He's brilliant with the chickens now though - and so is the cat.

Just started using straw in the nest box and they love. Am moving them on to hemcore with citronella (as advised on here) when they are permanently sited.

Eggs are really sweet and watching the children go and collect them is adorable. They are both so gentle taking them out and bringing them in to the kitchen.

Are you getting a cube electricbarbarella?

If I was getting 4 as my first hens then I would get;
brown hybrid - warren/goldline/ranger (lays brown eggs)
white hen - maybe a White Star (white eggs)
Speckeldy - dark brown eggs
Bluebelle - described as eggs with a 'plum blush'

Pics all here

The Black Rock is a lovely bird, beautiful to look at and very hardy, but I think they are often a bit mean - ours certainly is - she is the reason I'm off to get a new coop this morning...

If I was buying 4 for me now, I would get;

Welsummer - for terracotta eggs

Some sort of white egg layer - possibly a gold campine

A brahma

and a blue layer - maybe a cream legbar

solarpoweredbarbarella · 26/06/2008 09:31

Yep a cube, they all look fab, I actually can't wait, we are going on holiday 3 weeks after the cube comes so UI am not actually getting the chooks until we get back. That should keep us entertained for the whole summer holidaays i trhink.
I will definatley give the black rock a miss then as I don't have the space to splt them up.
They are all so gorgeous, i never liked chickjens before and now I am obbsessed.

tortoiseSHELL · 26/06/2008 12:48

The cubes do look lovely! You definitely need to be around for the girls when they arrive!

The black rocks are lovely chickens, really good layers, and very disease resistant, but I think they are also feisty - so if you're mixing breeds then perhaps best to give them a miss. Our one is ok, but one of the goldlines was being bullied by her, so I have just bought her a new house, and will get her a friend (or two) to go in it.
