Treadle feeder

We have one elderly chicken left from our small flock. She seems quite happy but rats have nested nearby and are taking her food. We’re thinking of getting a treadle feeder but wondered if anyone had experience as to how easily their chickens adapted as are worried she won’t work it out? We give her quite a lot of other bits and pieces to eat as well as grain and presumably the feeder is just for grain? Would be grateful for any advice.

I have one of these:

It's great and it doesnt take long for the chickens to get the hang of it. I only have ex working girls so they are 18 months old when I get them but everyone has got the hang of it. That one is quite pricey for one hen so I'm not sure about other treadle feeders but there is training option on my one. You start with the feeder fully open for a week (close it at night to keep the rats away). This gets them familiar with the step. Then you have it half open for a week which allows them to get used to the motion of the lid. It has really helped keep the rats at bay. I put layers pellets in it.

Thanks so much! I’d been looking at that one so it’s really good to have a recommendation and know there’s a training option. I think we might have to go for it as rat proofing the whole run seems virtually impossible.
